In recent years, Malaysia's executive sedan market has continued to grow. Consumers not only value brand and luxury but are also increasingly focused on fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are becoming a new choice in this segment. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350e, as one of the rare PHEV models in this class, retains the traditional luxury texture of Mercedes-Benz, while achieving long electric-only range and low fuel consumption with its plug-in hybrid system, making its core selling points highly distinctive. This review will assess the car from various aspects such as static design, interior practicality, and dynamic driving experience to provide an accurate perspective for potential buyers.

The exterior of the 2024 E350e continues the elegant style of the Mercedes E-Class, with smooth and steady overall lines. The front adopts a large-sized signature star grille paired with sharp LED headlamp clusters on both sides, offering high recognizability. The headlights incorporate an intelligent lighting system that supports automatic high and low beam switching along with steering assistance functionality. The car’s side profile reveals balanced proportions, with a beltline extending from the front fender to the rear, paired with 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, maintaining the dignified aura of an executive sedan while adding a sporty touch. The rear design is simple, with LED taillights connected by a chrome trim strip, providing a clear visual effect when lit up; the hidden exhaust layout aligns with the understated positioning of a PHEV. Overall, the exterior details are precisely designed, adhering to the luxurious appeal of the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Upon entering the cabin, the interior adopts the latest family design of Mercedes-Benz, with a light color scheme paired with wood grain trim panels, creating a cozy yet premium ambiance. The central console is equipped with a 14.4-inch Superscreen MBUX multimedia system, boasting high screen resolution, smooth operation, and support for voice control and phone connectivity; below the screen, some physical buttons are retained for easier blind operation. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with front seats offering electronic adjustments and memory functions, as well as multi-angle lumbar support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seats are equally spacious and comfortable, featuring independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports. The middle armrest can be folded down and integrates control buttons. In terms of storage, the front center armrest box has a large capacity, and the door pockets can hold large water bottles. The trunk capacity is 370 liters, slightly smaller than the fuel-powered version due to battery placement, but it meets daily household needs, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split to expand storage space.

The E350e is powered by a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.0T turbocharged engine with a rear electric motor, delivering a total system output of 313PS and a combined torque of 550N·m, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. In electric-only mode, the official range is 118 kilometers, making it possible to achieve zero fuel consumption for daily commutes. Fast charging takes 0.5 hours to charge to 80%, while full charging via slow charging takes 2 hours, offering a high level of charging convenience. During actual driving, the electric motor responds quickly during starts, providing smooth and quiet acceleration. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the engine seamlessly engages, delivering robust power output. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in an official time of 6.4 seconds, making overtaking effortless. The suspension features front and rear multi-link independent designs, tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing road bumps while maintaining good support. During cornering, body roll is minimal, the steering is precise, and the handling performance is excellent among executive sedans. In terms of fuel consumption, the combined operating condition is approximately 7L per 100 km, while electricity consumption in electric-only mode is 19.2 kWh/100 km, offering better fuel efficiency than comparable models in its class.

In terms of ride comfort, the vehicle's sound insulation is excellent, with wind and tire noise well-controlled at high speeds. The seat padding is soft yet supportive, and the rear legroom is spacious, providing over two fists of legroom for passengers who are 180cm tall. In terms of safety features, the car is equipped as standard with 9 airbags, ACC adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and active braking functions, offering comprehensive protection for drivers and passengers.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2024 E350e lies in its combination of "luxury + efficiency." Compared to the BMW 5 Series PHEV and Audi A6L PHEV in the same class, the E350e boasts a longer all-electric range, more luxurious interior feel, and more competitive pricing. At the same time, its performance is well-balanced, meeting the energy-saving demands of daily commuting while also delivering smooth and powerful performance. This car is suitable for families that value luxury and fuel efficiency, as well as middle-aged consumers who need to balance business and family use—they value brand image and also aim to reduce daily operating costs.

In summary, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350e is an executive sedan that balances luxury, performance, and efficiency. While maintaining the traditional advantages of Mercedes-Benz, it adapts to the market demand for environmentally friendly vehicles through its PHEV system and stands out as a worthy option within its class.

The interior is really top-notch! But this hybrid mode switches back and forth during traffic jams, which is a bit annoying...

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Hill. Just after leaving the KLCC underground parking lot, I encountered the morning rush hour. In pure electric mode, the motor's 440N·m torque made the start very brisk, and lane-switching was effortless. During the climb into the mountain, the combined 313 horsepower of the 2.0T engine and motor was sufficient, but the 2190kg weight made rapid acceleration feel a bit less punchy. While cornering in heavy rain, the stability control system intervened promptly, preventing skidding. However, the middle seat in the back row felt a bit hard, and during long journeys, my family said it became uncomfortable. The exterior with its star emblem grille and fastback lines caught people's attention; when parked in front of the orchard homestay, the hostess even asked if it was the new E-Class model.

Previously drove the old C-Class, upgrading to the E350e is a significant leap forward! The interior score of 4 is truly fair—Superscreen plus Burmester sound system make listening to music during morning traffic jams a relaxing experience. The exterior score of 4 is also accurate, with the star emblem and sleek fastback lines turning heads on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, comparable to the S-Class. As for the drawbacks, the pure electric range of 118 km is sufficient for city driving, but on the highway with the air conditioning on, the battery drains faster. On weekends heading to Genting Highlands, the hybrid mode delivers power on demand, doing 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, making overtaking effortless. Fast charging takes half an hour, enough to recharge while having a cup of teh tarik at the Penang service area. However, with a weight of 2190 kg, the body lean during cornering is more than expected. Still, the comprehensive safety features, including 9 airbags and ACC, ensure peace of mind when traveling with the kid. Overall, at this price range in Malaysia, it is a suitable choice for both business and family use!
