Specs

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment electric vehicle market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers not only value range reliability but also have higher expectations for configuration richness and design distinctiveness. The ORA Good Cat 400 Pro, as a popular model in this segment, has always attracted attention with its retro design and balanced configuration. The 2024 edition has been optimized in details this time. The main purpose of our test drive is to verify whether its range, configuration practicality, and driving performance in actual use match its pricing.

The 2024 Good Cat 400 Pro continues its classic retro styling, with smooth and rounded overall contours. The oval-shaped headlight assembly paired with the closed front grille makes for high recognizability. The waistline on the side of the car extends from the front fender to the rear, paired with 18-inch alloy wheels for a touch of sportiness. The design of the rear is relatively simple, with the taillight assembly adopting circular elements, echoing the front; the visual effect when lit up is good. For the lighting system, LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard, and the automatic headlight feature enhances everyday convenience.

Inside, the interior follows a minimalist style with a symmetrical layout for the dashboard. Soft materials are used primarily, paired with some chrome trim, offering decent texture. The central control screen measures 10.25 inches, is quite responsive to touch, and supports basic multimedia functions and smartphone connectivity. The instrument panel is fully digital and displays range, speed, driving modes, and other information with a clear layout. For configurations, keyless entry, one-button start, a 6-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, and a 4-way manually adjustable passenger seat are standard. The PM2.5 filtering automatic air conditioner in the front row ensures good air quality in the cabin. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, which expands the trunk storage space, making it easy to accommodate large items for daily use.

In terms of space, the vehicle’s dimensions are 4235mm in length, 1825mm in width, and 1596mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2650mm, placing it at a medium level among B-segment electric vehicles. The front-row seating offers ample space, and for a passenger with a height of 175cm, there’s sufficient headroom and legroom. The rear-row space also performs well, with a similarly tall passenger having about two fists’ worth of legroom and more than a fist of headroom, meeting the needs of everyday family usage. For storage, the capacity of the front central armrest box and door storage compartments is quite practical. The trunk has a default capacity that can fit two 20-inch suitcases, and with the rear seats folded down, the space becomes larger. The rear row is also equipped with air conditioning vents and USB ports, catering to the needs of rear passengers.

In terms of power, the Good Cat 400 Pro is equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering a maximum power of 105kW (143PS) and a maximum torque of 210N·m, with an official pure electric range of 400km and a battery capacity of 47.788kWh. During actual driving, the power response at startup is very direct, and a light press on the accelerator provides decent acceleration, making it suitable for urban road conditions. At medium and low speeds, power delivery is smooth, and when overtaking, pressing the accelerator harder allows the motor to swiftly deliver torque without feeling sluggish. There are three driving modes: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, power delivery is relatively gentle, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, power response is more immediate, catering to users seeking a more dynamic driving experience.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is relatively light, with minimal play, making daily driving very agile. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, with a tuning bias towards comfort. It performs well when dealing with speed bumps and minor bumps in urban areas, with good filtering effect and minimal vibrations transmitted into the cabin. When cornering, the body lean is controlled within a reasonable range, and it doesn't feel floaty, providing decent stability. With a minimum ground clearance of 145mm, it can handle some slightly rough roads without issues.

In terms of range, we conducted tests under urban road conditions with the air conditioning constantly on, driving in economy mode. The range achievement rate was about 85%, which is relatively stable. When it comes to electricity consumption, urban commuting averages around 13-15kWh/100km, while highway driving increases consumption to 16-18kWh/100km. For charging speed, fast charging from 30% to 80% takes about 32 minutes, while slow charging to full capacity takes 8 hours, which adequately meets daily charging needs. Brake performance is stable, with the brake pedal delivering a linear feel. During emergency braking, the vehicle posture is well-controlled.

In terms of driving comfort, the interior noise control is decent. At low to medium speeds, tire noise and wind noise are not very noticeable. At high speeds, wind noise becomes slightly more apparent but remains acceptable. The seat padding is relatively soft with good support, so long-distance driving does not feel too tiring. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels, and even at the highest level, the recovery force is not abrupt, making daily driving smooth without a significant dragging sensation.

In summary, the core highlights of the 2024 Ora Good Cat 400 Pro include its balanced configuration, retro design, and stable range performance. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BYD Atto 3, the Good Cat 400 Pro has a price advantage while offering comparable features. Compared to the MG4 EV, the Good Cat excels in interior quality and comfort. Overall, it is suitable for family users who value practical features and stable range, as well as young people who appreciate retro designs and prioritize daily driving comfort. If you're looking for a reasonably priced class B electric car, the Good Cat 400 Pro is worth considering.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the foot of Yun Ding Mountain for an outing. When a sudden heavy rain hit, the Good Cat's automatic wipers accelerated automatically, and the LED headlights turned on promptly. The motor torque was sufficient while climbing the mountain, making uphill driving effortless. ACC cruise control made driving on mountain roads much easier. The PM2.5 filter in the interior was very practical, but the manual adjustment on the front passenger seat was a bit inconvenient. The 360-degree camera was very helpful on the slippery and narrow roads, and the 6 airbags and active braking gave me peace of mind. The range took a slight hit due to mountain roads and air conditioning, but fast charging for half an hour helped replenish a lot. Overall, very satisfied.

Every time I sit inside, I can't help but praise it, but the exterior has such a high head-turning rate that it gives me a bit of social anxiety…

Last week, I took my family for an outing at the foot of Cloud Top Mountain. Halfway through, a sudden heavy rain started, and the rain-sensing wipers automatically activated. My daughter stared at the smooth retro LED headlights and said they looked like "glowing little cakes." The 400km range was enough for a round trip, and the fast charge took only 32 minutes to replenish, which was very convenient. However, the plastic feel of the interior was a bit strong, so I deducted 1 point. But the 6 airbags and 360-degree imaging provided peace of mind on the winding mountain roads. The 145mm ground clearance handled water puddles steadily as well. Overall, very satisfied, and the exterior design indeed turns heads!

Previously, I drove a Japanese fuel car, but I switched to the Ora Good Cat 400 Pro because of its retro design and high configuration. Safety gets 4 points, the 6 airbags + automatic braking saved me during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour—it stopped suddenly when following too closely, faster than my reaction! Performance gets 4 points; the 143 hp motor starts quickly, overtaking on Penang mountain roads is smooth, but acceleration after 120 km/h on the highway is slightly sluggish. Interior gets 5 points! The retro round air conditioning vents + 10.25-inch screen are very exquisite, the leather seats are super soft, and it’s so comfortable to touch them during Kuala Lumpur traffic jams. Minor downside: the slightly raised floor in the middle of the rear seats makes it a bit cramped for three people; the sound quality from the 4 speakers is average. Weekend trips with the kid to Genting Highlands are no problem, the 400 km range is enough for a round trip, and fast charging takes only 32 minutes, which is super convenient. My wife praised it for being much more economical than a fuel car!
