Specs

The mid-size luxury SUV market has always been the focus of high-end family users in Malaysia. The performance of the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport in this segment is worth paying attention to. As a mid-cycle facelift model of the brand, it retains its classic style while focusing on optimizing power response and intelligent configurations. The core of this review is to verify whether it strikes a balance between luxury, practicality, and driving quality, providing a clear reference for target consumers.

From the exterior design, this model stands out distinctly. The front continues the dual kidney grille design with a moderate size but paired with high-gloss black chrome trim and the M Sport-specific front bumper, significantly enhancing the sporty feel. The body side lines are sleek and streamlined, while the 21-inch dual-tone multi-spoke rims (front 275/40 R21, rear 315/35 R21) reinforce the sense of power. The silver roof rack and chrome trim below the window line add a touch of luxury. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights adopt a smoked finish, combined with dual chrome exhaust outlets on both sides, giving the overall look a sense of robustness without losing vitality.

Sitting inside, the interior exudes both luxury and technological sophistication. The dashboard is crafted using soft-touch material combined with metallic trim, offering a delicate texture. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch central control screen form a dual-screen system, running the latest iDrive 8.5 system. The operation is smooth and supports wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. The standard HUD (Head-Up Display) projects information like speed and navigation, reducing driver distraction. Regarding seating, the front features power-adjustable leather seats with good support. The rear seating area is spacious, leaving two fists worth of legroom even for passengers 180cm tall. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats can also expand the trunk capacity from 650L to a larger volume, meeting the needs of family trips or cargo transportation.

The power performance is one of the highlights of this model. Equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine (48V mild hybrid system), it delivers a maximum power output of 280kW (381PS) and maximum torque of 540N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 5.4 seconds. During actual driving, the mild hybrid system provides additional assistance during start-up, and the power response is swift. Acceleration in the mid-to-high range remains strong, offering a noticeable push-back feeling when pressing the accelerator hard during overtaking. The three driving modes (Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport) exhibit clear differences. In Sport mode, the transmission has delayed shifts, and the steering feels heavier, suitable for spirited driving. In Comfort mode, it balances power and smoothness, making it ideal for daily commuting.

The chassis tuning leans toward stability. The front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively filter out bumps when tackling common speed bumps or potholes in Malaysia, maintaining the stability of the body. During high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the tires (rear tire width is 315mm) offer strong grip, giving the driver ample confidence. In terms of fuel consumption, actual tests on mixed roads are about 10.2L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure of 9.3L, but considering its power performance, it remains within a reasonable range.

The daily driving and riding comfort is commendable. The interior sound insulation performance is excellent, with wind noise and tire noise kept at low levels during high-speed driving. The Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system delivers clear audio quality, enhancing the driving and riding experience. The intelligent driving assistance features are fully equipped, with practical functions such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, 360-degree panoramic view, and an automatic parking system that accurately identifies parking spaces, making it friendly for beginners.

Overall, the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport stands out in its class. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC, it offers more powerful performance and more comprehensive features (such as standard HUD and 16-speaker sound system), while being more competitively priced. Compared to the Audi Q7 55 TFSI quattro, it provides a more refined driving experience and more advanced technological features. This vehicle is suitable for users who value luxury, performance, and family practicality. Whether for daily commuting or long weekend trips, it meets the needs well.

In summary, the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport is an exceptionally well-balanced mid-size luxury SUV. It not only continues the brand's driving pleasure but also caters to the practical needs of family users through its rich features and spacious interior. If you are looking for a "well-rounded" luxury SUV, it is worth considering for your shortlist.

Previously driving a Japanese SUV always felt a bit lacking in power, but after switching to this X5 M Sport, it’s finally satisfying! The 3.0T engine with mild hybrid system lets me weave through Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour effortlessly; step on the accelerator and it takes off, while the 8-speed automatic transmission shifts as smoothly as drinking pulled tea. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the 21-inch tires grip the road incredibly well. The xDrive system keeps it steady around corners, and the ACC (adaptive cruise control) frees up my right foot. The safety features are fully loaded; last time on the Penang highway, the car in front braked suddenly, and the automatic braking system stopped my car immediately—gave me a real scare! But, the rear air conditioning is a bit weak, in the 38°C weather, it has to be set to the lowest to feel cool enough. That said, the exterior design has an amazing turn-head rate, with the kidney grille and M package. Taking photos with it parked under the Petronas Towers is just stunning. The 460,000 MYR spent on it was totally worth it!

As the owner of the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport and having driven it in Malaysia for three months, I truly feel that the money was well spent! Previously, I drove the old GLE 350 and compared it with the Q7 55 TFSI when switching cars. Ultimately, I chose this one because the performance and handling felt more satisfying. The 3.0T engine combined with the 48V Mild Hybrid makes following traffic in Comfort mode during rush hours smooth, while switching to Sport mode for weekend drives on the North-South Highway gives an instant burst of power. A 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.4 seconds inspires confidence when overtaking trucks on the highway. The interior feels much more high-tech than the older models with the practical 14.9-inch screen and HUD, though the piano black finish tends to attract fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning. The safety features are top-notch; just last month on a Penang mountain road, it almost saved me from a rear-end collision when the emergency braking system kicked in promptly. The only minor complaint is that the rear middle floor hump is a bit high, making it slightly uncomfortable for three people to sit in the back, but for daily family use, it’s sufficient. Overall, this car is well-suited for Malaysia’s road conditions, whether it's city commuting or long-distance driving!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just as we started up the mountain road, it began pouring rain, and the road was as slippery as if it had been coated with oil. Switching to Sport mode, the 3.0T turbocharged engine delivered 540 Nm of torque at just 1750 rpm. While overtaking, stepping hard on the accelerator made the 8-speed automatic transmission shift as smoothly as a knife through butter. The xDrive system gripped the road firmly, and the body remained astonishingly stable during cornering—this 2.2-ton vehicle was surprisingly nimble on winding mountain roads, almost like a sedan. When we arrived at the orchard and opened the trunk to load durians, the 650-liter capacity could fit three boxes of durians with their husks and still have space left. My wife adjusted the electric seat in the front passenger seat. Meanwhile, my child in the rear seat gazed at the rain through the panoramic sunroof, with Harman Kardon playing children’s songs in the background. The soundproofing was so good that the rain outside was reduced to mere background noise. The only downside was that the M Sport Package’s front lip was too pronounced and scraped against the uneven dirt road in the orchard. My heart ached for a while—while this design looks aggressive, navigating the rural roads of Malaysia surely requires some extra care.
