In Malaysia's luxury sports car market, two-door coupes over the 200kW category have always been a niche but highly attractive segment—consumers seek the driving pleasure of high performance without compromising on daily comfort and technological features. The 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is precisely aimed at meeting this demand, with its 600PS twin-turbocharged V8 engine, all-wheel-drive system, and fully loaded tech features as its core selling points. It strives to strike a balance between being a "performance beast" and a "luxury GT." The primary purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this car can fulfill both the thrill of weekend road curves and the practicality of weekday commutes.

At first sight of the 2020 M850i xDrive Coupe, its overall design leans towards low-key sportiness, with no overly exaggerated aerodynamic kits, yet its details are distinct enough to be recognized. The front adopts BMW's signature kidney grille, slightly larger than that of the standard 8 Series, accented with chrome trim. The headlights are full-LED units, narrow and extending towards the sides of the car, with classic angel-eye daytime running lights that offer high recognition when lit. The side profile features smooth lines, with the coupe’s fastback design extending from the A-pillar to the rear end, complemented by 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (front 275/35 R20, rear 285/35 R20), giving the side view a sleek and dynamic proportion. The rear design is minimalist, with a quad-exhaust layout signaling its performance identity, and the 3D-styled LED tail lights echo the lighting design of the front. The rear bumper houses a diffuser that, though not exaggerated, adequately enhances the sporty vibe.

Opening the door, the interior carries forward BMW's signature luxury and technological feel. The dashboard is wrapped in abundant soft-touch materials, paired with metallic trims and piano black panels, offering a refined tactile sensation everywhere you touch. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with front seats supporting electric adjustment and boasting excellent bolstering, ensuring that the body remains secure during aggressive driving while also being comfortable for long hours of sitting. The center console layout is clear and functional, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen display equipped with the iDrive system, which operates smoothly and supports CarPlay connectivity. The instrument cluster is also a 12.3-inch full LCD display, capable of switching between classic, sport, and other modes, with UI designs adjusting to suit different driving styles. In terms of features, standard equipment includes a HUD head-up digital display, wireless charging, and a Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system, combining practicality and entertainment. Regarding space, the vehicle measures 4867mm/1907mm/1362mm in length/width/height, with a wheelbase of 2827mm. The front-row space is spacious, offering sufficient headroom and legroom even for passengers 180cm tall. While the rear features a 2+2 layout, the legroom is only suitable for short trips, better suited for children or as additional storage; however, the rear seats can be folded down in a 50:50 split, and the trunk has a capacity of 420L, with expandable space after folding, which is adequate for daily luggage storage needs.

Starting the vehicle, the deep roar of the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine instantly ignites the desire to drive. This engine delivers a maximum power of 600PS, a peak torque of 750N·m, and is paired with an 8AT transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The officially claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration is just 3.3 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is immediate during the initial acceleration; with a light push on the accelerator, a strong thrust-back sensation can be experienced. Switching to sport mode, the transmission becomes more aggressive, with noticeably faster downshifts and almost no delay in power delivery when pressing the accelerator, making overtaking effortless. In handling, the steering feels precise with minimal play. In sport mode, the steering weight increases, giving a more solid sense of control. The chassis adopts front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for sportiness yet retaining a degree of comfort. During daily driving, most small bumps are absorbed, and there’s no harsh impact over speed bumps. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system intelligently distributes torque between the front and rear wheels, maintaining stability even during quick cornering. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 10.8L/100km. In actual urban driving, fuel consumption is about 14-15L/100km, dropping to 9-10L/100km on highways, which is within a normal range for a high-displacement performance car. As for comfort, the vehicle’s sound insulation is excellent, with wind and tire noise kept at reasonable levels during highway driving. The seats strike a good balance between support and wrap-around comfort, ensuring a fatigue-free experience even during long drives.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe lies in its "versatility" — the 600PS V8 engine meets the driving needs of performance enthusiasts, the all-wheel-drive system enhances handling stability, and the abundance of technological features coupled with relatively comfortable chassis tuning ensures convenience for daily use. Compared to its rivals in the same class, such as the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 or Audi RS 7 Sportback, the M850i has a slight edge in power specifications and comes with more standard tech features, offering better value for money. This car suits two types of consumers: first, middle-aged buyers who pursue performance but do not want to compromise on luxury and practicality, using it as a daily commuter while enjoying driving pleasure on weekends; second, young affluent individuals who love the styling of two-door coupes, fulfilling social status requirements while occasionally experiencing speed and excitement.

All in all, the 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is a luxurious coupe that is both "elegant and powerful," perfectly combining performance, luxury, and practicality, with no significant weaknesses. If you're looking for a car that can serve as a daily driver while also bringing out passion on the track or winding roads, the M850i is definitely worth considering.

Previously, I was driving a 3 Series, but I switched to the M850i purely because I was struck by the aura of this two-door coupe. The interior deserves a perfect score, no exaggeration—Harman Kardon speakers are a lifesaver when stuck in Kuala Lumpur traffic, and every touchable surface is genuine leather, which feels warmer compared to my friend's Panamera. However, I deducted a point for performance because the 4.4T turbo feels a bit jumpy while following traffic at low speeds; you need to be careful with the gas pedal during the morning rush hour. The true highlight is driving on mountain roads to Genting Highlands over the weekend; the xDrive's grip is incredibly solid, and the steering feedback on corners is so much more precise than the old 3 Series. The only small downside is the rear space—when taking my parents to Penang, my dad, who's 175cm tall, hit his head in the backseat. But none of that really matters—the growl of the engine when you press the start button is worth it!

In the past, driving the 3 Series always felt a bit lacking in "ferocity." Switching to the M850i truly feels like getting to the soul of a performance car! The 4.4T twin-turbo + all-wheel-drive system in Sport mode during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour makes overtaking feel as smooth as slicing through butter. The 3.3-second 0-100 km/h acceleration gives a kickback sensation that can scare the passenger into hilarious reactions. The interior Harman Kardon sound system is powerful, but the rear space can only be used for emergencies — last time, when I took my parents to Penang, they could hardly stretch their legs in the back. Fortunately, the 420L trunk could fit the luggage. The safety features are comprehensive, but the steering wheel is a bit heavy, making maneuvering in the city a bit tiring. On weekends, driving on the Genting Highlands mountain roads feels as steady as being glued to the ground, with full confidence in cornering. Fuel consumption of over 12L is acceptable — after all, it’s a "suit-wearing thug" capable of daily commuting!

I always felt my previous C63 AMG lacked a bit of elegance, until I saw the sleek lines of the M850i Coupe's fastback design, and I was instantly hooked. The 4.4T V8 is smooth enough during the morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur even when the turbo hasn’t kicked in, and the Harman Kardon sound system drowns out the noise of the traffic. On weekends driving along the North-South Expressway, the 3.3-second 0-100 km/h acceleration in Sport+ mode makes overtaking incredibly thrilling, and the xDrive keeps things exceptionally stable even in rainy highway conditions. However, the rear seats are really only for emergencies; at 1.7 meters tall, my head touches the roof when I sit there. The carbon-fiber trim and crystal gear knob in the interior are very exquisite, but the wireless charging pad heats up significantly. The safety features are fully loaded, and the automatic emergency braking once saved me from a cut-in, making it worth every penny!

Previously, the C-Class coupe I drove always felt like it lacked some "aggression." I tried the Panamera Turbo but found the interior too business-like. Then I came across this M850i—the roar of its 4.4T V8 directly hit my adrenaline. The interior is absolutely top-notch, no exaggeration—Nappa leather + metal trim feels way more refined than my friend's AMG GT S. The Harman Kardon sound system is a real savior during Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams. The safety features are maxed out; last time on the Penang highway, a motorbike suddenly appeared, and the active braking intervened immediately. It scared me but handled solidly. Some minor complaints though—the rear seats are quite cramped for adults on long trips, and the 10.8L fuel consumption in Malaysia's city driving can occasionally pinch the wallet. But heading up the Genting Highlands on weekends, the xDrive grip is phenomenal—cornering is way more stable than the old M6. Totally worth the money!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy downpour. The xDrive of the M850i was as steady as if it were glued to the wet asphalt road. The 4.4T twin-turbo showed no lag while climbing; as soon as the revs passed 1800 rpm, the 600 horsepower easily pushed the car through the series of bends. Malay folk songs were playing through the 16 Harman Kardon speakers, but the kids in the back complained about the hard seats—after all, it's a two-door coupe, and the rear space is indeed cramped. However, the LED headlights had excellent penetration in the heavy rain, and the 360-degree camera system helped avoid water puddles while parking, which can be considered a minor flaw in an otherwise perfect experience.
