BMW M3 Competition M xDrive 2023 Review

In Malaysia's D-segment luxury performance car market, consumers are increasingly emphasizing dual demands for "daily practicality" and "track-level performance"—wanting the convenience of a four-door sedan for carrying passengers and cargo while refusing to compromise on the pure thrill of power and handling. The 2023 BMW M3 Competition M xDrive precisely targets this niche market. Not only does it inherit the performance genes of M Power, but also balances driving limits with everyday stability through its xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The core purpose of this test drive is to evaluate the car's overall performance in urban commuting, highway cruising, and mountain road driving scenarios to see if it truly becomes a "balanced and versatile" performance benchmark.
From the exterior design, the 2023 M3 Competition possesses an almost unmatched level of recognition. The front fascia adopts the iconic large-sized double kidney grille of the M series, paired with a blacked-out honeycomb grille that delivers an intense visual impact; the sharp design of the LED headlights, along with the iconic Angel Eye daytime running lights when illuminated, is highly recognizable. The side profile of the car is sleek, with a length of 4794mm and a width of 1903mm, giving the overall car a low and wide appearance. Coupled with 19-inch front/20-inch rear staggered wheels (front: 275/35 R19, rear: 285/30 R20), it further enhances the stance of a performance car. At the rear, the dual exhaust layout with four round tailpipes is a classic M Power design. Joined by the slightly upturned ducktail spoiler, it not only ensures aerodynamic efficiency but also retains a sense of aggressive performance. The full LED taillights are highly recognizable when illuminated at night.
Sitting inside, the overall interior design leans towards a combination of sportiness and technology. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and paired with an Alcantara steering wheel and seats, offering both a luxurious feel and a sporty atmosphere. The central control area is equipped with a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen, integrated with the iDrive system, which is smooth to operate and feature-packed. The instrument cluster is also a 12.3-inch fully digital display, capable of switching between different driving mode interfaces, clearly showing performance data such as RPM, speed, and torque. In terms of features, the HUD (Heads-Up Display), keyless entry/ignition, front heated seats, and independent rear air conditioning are all standard configurations, meeting the convenience needs of daily use. The Harman/Kardon 12-speaker audio system also delivers impressive sound quality, providing a pleasant auditory experience. In terms of space, the 2857mm wheelbase ensures a roomy head and leg space for the front seats, keeping even a passenger with a height of 180cm comfortable without feeling cramped. The rear legroom is average, while headroom is slightly compromised due to the sloping roofline, though it's sufficient for short trips with adults. Regarding storage capacity, the front central armrest compartment and door panel storage pockets are quite spacious, and the trunk offers a standard volume of 480 liters, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases. This level of practicality is considered quite good among performance cars.
In the power department, this car is equipped with a 3.0L inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 517PS and a peak torque of 650N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, when switched to Comfort mode, the power output is relatively smooth, with no noticeable jerking during initial acceleration, making it suitable for urban commutes. When the accelerator is pressed deeply, the turbocharger engages quickly, offering ample power reserves. Mid-range acceleration (80-120km/h) provides a strong push-back sensation, making overtaking very easy. When switched to Sport or Sport+ mode, the engine's response becomes more aggressive, the transmission shifts quicker, and coupled with the exhaust's roar (with backfire sounds in Sport+ mode), provides a thrilling driving experience. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 3.5 seconds, and during actual testing under launch control, it can achieve an approximate time of 3.7 seconds. The performance lives up to expectations.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise steering feel with minimal slack, providing clear feedback of road conditions during mountain driving; the MacPherson front suspension and multi-link rear suspension are tuned for sportiness, offering excellent support and well-controlled body roll during cornering, maintaining vehicle stability even in high-speed corners. The addition of the xDrive all-wheel-drive system significantly enhances traction, preventing wheel slippage on slippery roads or during rapid acceleration, boosting driving confidence. The chassis does a fairly good job of absorbing road bumps, and in Comfort mode, it can handle most small urban road bumps without a noticeable rigid feel; however, when passing speed bumps or large potholes, rear-seat passengers may feel some vibration, which is an inevitable trade-off in the tuning of a performance car.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.1L/100km. In actual driving, the fuel consumption in urban commuting conditions is about 12-13L/100km, while during highway cruising it can drop to 8-9L/100km. For a performance car with 517 horsepower, this fuel consumption is quite reasonable. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are somewhat noticeable at high speeds but remain within an acceptable range; engine noise is well suppressed in Comfort mode and deliberately amplified in Sport mode to enhance the driving atmosphere. The seats provide good support, and the Alcantara material offers enough friction to ensure comfort during long drives.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 BMW M3 Competition M xDrive lies in its "all-around" capabilities—it combines the iconic performance of M Power with the practicality of an all-wheel-drive system and four-door design. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance, this car's pure fuel-powered engine offers a more authentic driving feel, while the stability from the all-wheel-drive system makes it better suited for Malaysia's rainy road conditions. When compared to the Audi RS4 Avant, it boasts stronger power figures and better acceleration performance. However, its rear space and headroom are not exceptional within the same class, and opting for additional features like active braking will drive the price higher, which is worth noting.
This car is mainly suitable for two types of buyers: one is consumers who seek performance but also need a daily commuter—it can unleash passion on the track and provide comfortable city commuting; the other is families that value both brand and performance. The four-door, five-seat layout and decent storage space can meet the needs of short family trips. All in all, the 2023 BMW M3 Competition M xDrive is a "can tackle the track and also pick up the kids" all-round performance car. If you're looking for a performance car that's not overly "extreme," it would be a great choice.
