BYD ATTO 3 2023 Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment electric vehicle market has become increasingly intense, and the demand for long range and high configuration among family users continues to rise. The recently launched 2023 BYD ATTO 3 Anniversary Special Edition is targeting this niche market. As an anniversary special edition model, it not only retains the Extended Range version’s official range of 480km but also optimizes configuration details while being priced only 6,000 MYR higher than the latter. The main purpose of this test drive is to evaluate the practicality, performance, and configuration value of this special edition model in daily use to see if it is worth the extra budget for consumers.
From the exterior, the Anniversary Special Edition remains consistent with the Extended Range version, with an overall style leaning toward youthful and dynamic. The front features a closed grille design, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides. The daytime running lights inside the headlights are L-shaped, providing high recognition. The vehicle's side profile shows smooth lines with a refined 18-inch multi-spoke wheel design and 215/55 R18 tires that are well-proportioned to the body. At the rear, the through-type LED taillights are a visual highlight, offering a striking lighting effect. Below that is a simple-designed rear bumper without overly complex lines. The overall dimensions of the vehicle are 4455mm in length, 1875mm in width, 1615mm in height, and a 2720mm wheelbase, which fits the standard size of the C-Segment. From the side, the vehicle appears relatively elongated.
Inside the cabin, the interior adopts a minimalist and modern design style, with a 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen at the center of the dashboard. The touch responsiveness is excellent, supporting commonly used functions such as navigation, multimedia, and vehicle settings. The interior materials mainly consist of soft-touch surfaces, with leather wrapping around the armrest box and inner sides of the door panels, providing a comfortable touch. The instrument panel is a fully digital display, offering clear information on speed, range, battery level, etc., while the HUD head-up display can project key data onto the windshield, reducing the need to look away while driving. In terms of configuration, the special edition comes equipped with electrically adjustable front seats (6-way for the driver and 4-way for the passenger), independent rear air conditioning vents, 220V/230V power outlets, as well as keyless entry and start functions, enhancing daily convenience.
In terms of space, the 2720mm wheelbase provides notable advantages in the rear row. A 175cm passenger seated in the rear has about two fists of legroom left and one fist of headroom, avoiding any sense of confinement. The trunk volume is 440L, easily accommodating two 28-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, which can be expanded to create more storage space, meeting the needs of family trips or transporting large items. The cabin provides ample storage compartments, including door panel slots, a storage box under the center console, and the central armrest box, all of which are practical for placing phones, water bottles, and other small items.
In terms of power, the Anniversary Special Edition is equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 150kW (205PS) and a maximum torque of 310N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.3 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is quick at the start. Just a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back feeling. On urban roads, overtaking and changing lanes are relatively easy. The driving modes include Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, the power output is relatively moderate, suitable for daily commutes; while in Sport mode, the power response is more aggressive, catering to scenarios that require rapid acceleration. The battery capacity is 60.48kWh, with an official range of 480km. During this test drive on mixed roads (approximately 60% urban roads and 40% highways), the actual range realization rate was about 85%, with an energy consumption of approximately 15kWh per 100 kilometers, which meets expectations.
In terms of handling and chassis, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension + rear multi-link independent suspension performs well when dealing with urban bumpy roads, effectively filtering out most of the fine vibrations, resulting in good comfort for rear passengers. When driving at high speeds, the body stability is strong, the steering precision is accurate with minimal dead angle, and the body roll is maintained within a reasonable range during cornering without any noticeable swaying feeling. As for braking, the front ventilated disc brakes and rear disc brakes offer a linear braking effect, and during emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without drifting issues.
Regarding ride comfort, the vehicle’s noise control is well-executed, with wind and tire noise being minimal at high speeds, and the electric motor operates very quietly. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels, with the highest level providing strong regenerative braking that gives a noticeable deceleration upon releasing the accelerator, making it suitable for users accustomed to a single-pedal driving mode. The lowest level closely resembles the coasting feel of fuel vehicles, making it easier to adapt. The seats offer good wrapping and support, ensuring that long drives don’t lead to fatigue, while the cushioning in the rear seats is equally soft, providing a high degree of comfort for passengers.
Overall, the 2023 BYD ATTO 3 Anniversary Special Edition's core strengths lie in its long range, rich features, and well-balanced dynamic performance. Compared to the Model Y Standard Range in the same segment, it is more affordable and better equipped; when compared to local electric vehicle brands, its range and performance are more advantageous. Although the Special Edition is priced 6,000 MYR higher than the Extended Range version, the detailed configuration upgrades (such as seat adjustments and minor tweaks to the air conditioning system) enhance the user experience, maintaining its outstanding value for money.
This model is suitable for families that prioritize range and features, as it meets the requirements for daily commuting and weekend family outings. At the same time, young consumers looking for performance and advanced technology features will also find a pleasant driving experience. Overall, the Anniversary Special Edition is a well-balanced C-segment electric vehicle with strong competitiveness in its price range.
