The B-Segment market has become increasingly competitive in recent years. Consumers not only demand practicality for daily commuting but also have higher expectations for safety features and smart functionalities. The 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E is an updated model introduced under such circumstances. As the main entry-level version in the series, it continues Toyota's hallmark durability while offering key upgrades over the previous model. Most notably, the addition of a 360-degree parking camera system and the new Optitron instrument cluster enhances its value for money. In this test drive, we focused on experiencing the daily usability of this car to see if it meets the core needs of mainstream family users.

In terms of appearance, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E has not changed much compared to the 2023 model, maintaining an overall compact and dynamic style. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides. The daytime running lights form an L-shape, providing good recognizability when lit. The side profile showcases smooth lines, and the 16-inch wheels are well-proportioned to the body, avoiding any hint of being undersized. At the rear, the LED taillights echo the design of the front, while the black trim on the lower rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. Rear fog lamps are standard, enhancing safety in rainy or foggy conditions. The overall design avoids excessive flashy elements, offering a pleasing and practical look in line with its role as a family car.

Sitting inside, the first thing that catches the eye is the new Optitron instrument cluster. Compared to the 2023 model's Electroluminescent Analogue instrument panel, the display is clearer and the data is more intuitive to read. The center console is equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen, with decent operational smoothness and support for basic multimedia functions. The interior primarily uses hard plastics, but the build quality is quite solid with no noticeable looseness. A multifunction steering wheel is standard, with buttons on the left-hand side for volume control and call answering, while the right side includes cruise control buttons, making daily operations quite convenient. The seats are manually adjustable; while not as convenient as power adjustments, the adjustment range is sufficient to accommodate most drivers. The seat cushions strike a good balance between softness and firmness, offering decent support.

In terms of space, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E has a wheelbase of 2550mm, which is consistent with the previous model. The front row offers ample space, with a 175cm-tall passenger having a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting their seating position. Rear space is average for a B-Segment model. A passenger of the same height sitting in the rear would have two fists of legroom and four fingers of headroom, making it comfortable without feeling cramped. The rear row is equipped with air vents, and while the air conditioning is manual, rear passengers' comfort is well-considered. The trunk has a 286L capacity, sufficient for storing two carry-on suitcases or some shopping bags. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding the storage space to accommodate occasional larger items.

For power, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E is fitted with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 107 PS and a maximum torque of 140 N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. We are quite familiar with this powertrain combination. The engine response during startup is fairly brisk, making it suitable for following traffic in urban conditions. The acceleration process is smooth, with no obvious jerkiness. The CVT transmission manages engine RPM reasonably well, and the engine noise is not intrusive during daily commutes. When the accelerator is pressed hard, there is a slight delay in power output, but once up to speed, overtaking is relatively effortless. After all, this car is positioned as a family commuter vehicle, and spirited driving is not its primary focus.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a moderate level of resistance, with precise response and no obvious slack, making it very easy to get used to for daily driving. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most minor vibrations, and the body exhibits no obvious bouncing. During cornering, the body roll is kept within an acceptable range, without giving a floating sensation, and the overall stability is good. The braking system features ventilated discs in the front and drum brakes in the rear, with a linear pedal feel and evenly distributed braking force, providing confidence during daily driving.

Fuel consumption performance is an important criterion for family cars. We tested it over a week of mixed road conditions, including urban congestion and highways, achieving an average fuel consumption of approximately 7.2L/100km, which is close to the official figures. For a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, this performance is considered standard. A full 42L fuel tank can cover roughly 580km, making it adequate for a week’s commuting needs.

In terms of driving comfort, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E exhibits good noise control, with wind and tire noise at highway speeds maintained within an acceptable range, not affecting normal conversations inside the car. As previously mentioned, the seat comfort level ensures that long durations of sitting do not cause fatigue. Additionally, this car is equipped with 7 safety airbags, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, active braking, and other safety features. Its safety performance ranks among the top in its class, which is very important for family users.

Overall, the core strength of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E lies in its balanced performance without significant weaknesses. Compared to competing models in the same class, it offers more comprehensive safety features and boasts a reputation for durability. Although its power output is average, it is more than sufficient for daily commuting. It is suitable for those who prioritize practicality and safety, especially for families seeking a reliable daily commuter with a focus on cost-performance. If you are looking for a worry-free, durable, and adequately equipped family car, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E is worth considering.

Pros
The interior is practical and thoughtful, with a simple center console, smooth touch screen, quick cooling automatic air conditioning, supportive seats, and foldable rear seats.
Rich safety features, standard 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, some models equipped with automatic braking and 360-degree view camera.
Fuel-efficient, approximately 6.5L/100km in the city and about 5.5L on the highway, suitable for Malaysia's traffic conditions.
Cons
The rear design is ordinary and conservative, lacking refinement and sportiness, and is not as bold compared to models in the same class.
Insufficient climbing power, requiring deep throttle pressing when fully loaded or going uphill, with slow power response.
The paint is relatively thin and prone to scratches; minor collisions such as door bumps from adjacent cars or slight scrapes will leave marks.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Yaris 1.5J
As the owner of the 2019 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, I’ve been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, and the overall experience has been pretty great! I’d give the interior a score of 5, I’m really satisfied with it. The dashboard design is simple and practical, while the touchscreen is responsive, making it very convenient for navigation or connecting Bluetooth. Although the seats are manually adjustable, they offer excellent support and comfort. On weekends, when taking family trips to Genting Highlands, driving for over two hours still feels comfortable. The rear space is just right for a family of four, and there’s ample room even with a child safety seat. I’d rate the exterior a 4. The overall design is stylish, especially the dynamic front grille. However, the rear design feels a bit plain; it would have been better if it looked a bit more refined. On the streets in Malaysia, this car does catch a fair amount of attention, and friends often compliment its appearance. For performance, I’d also give it a 4. The 1.5L engine provides sufficient power for city driving, with smooth acceleration and overtaking. The CVT gearbox delivers seamless transitions and offers impressive fuel efficiency—around 6.5L/100km in the city and about 5.5L on highways. For those of us frequently stuck in traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, this makes it very economical. However, it does feel a bit underpowered when climbing steep slopes, which requires pressing harder on the gas pedal. Overall, this car performs brilliantly in Malaysia’s driving conditions. It’s highly cost-effective and definitely worth recommending!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5G
As a 2023 Yaris 1.5G owner, after driving for three months and nearly 5,000 kilometers, here are my honest thoughts! **Interior** giving it 4 stars is quite reasonable — the 9-inch central touch screen is very responsive, and connecting CarPlay for navigation is super convenient when stuck in KL city traffic. The seats are fabric but provide enough support. However, the manual height adjustment takes quite a while to twist; it would be perfect if it were electric. **Safety-wise**, I feel very assured. Last time in Subang Jaya, I almost got sideswiped by a car changing lanes suddenly, but the lane departure warning immediately beeped to alert me, and the automatic braking even stepped in for me! With 7 airbags and a 360-degree view camera, I'm not worried about scratching the car even when parking in narrow alleys in PJ at night. The sense of safety is top-notch. **Performance** suits Malaysian road conditions just fine — the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with a CVT isn't super fast when starting, but it's very stable at 110 on the highway. Even the crosswinds on the Penang Bridge don't make it feel unsteady. However, when going uphill, like halfway up Genting, stepping harder on the accelerator makes the engine sound a bit "roaring," but for daily commutes, it's more than enough. Overall, with the features it provides at this price, for someone like me who drives daily in the city and occasionally goes on short trips, I'm already very satisfied!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E
As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, I've been driving it for three months and I like it more and more! First of all, the exterior definitely deserves full marks — Malaysia’s weather is sunny throughout the year, and the metallic paint on this car shines especially bright under the sun. The large grille in the front along with the LED headlights gives it a high return rate whether driving along Jalan Bukit Bintang in KL or in George Town, Penang. The body lines are very sleek, and it doesn't look bulky from the side. Maneuvering through narrow one-way streets or parking lots in Kuala Lumpur feels particularly agile, and parking is easy. The safety features give me great peace of mind, especially since traffic in Malaysia can be quite chaotic, not to mention the sheer number of motorcycles. Last time, I was on the highway in Subang Jaya when the car in front of me braked suddenly. Before I even had time to react, the automatic braking system kicked in immediately. It gave me a scare but definitely saved my life! When driving long distances on the North-South Expressway, the lane departure warning reminds me to stay in my lane. The 360-degree camera system makes parking in crowded neighborhoods in PJ worry-free, even when it’s tight. The 7 airbags are rare in cars of this price range. When I took my family to Genting Highlands, my wife, sitting in the rear seat, felt very safe. Overall, these points were far beyond my expectations, making the purchase worth it!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris G Limited
As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Yaris G Limited, after three months of driving, I must say I like it more and more! Let me start with safety—full marks without hesitation. Traffic jams are common in the city areas of Malaysia. Last time, on Jalan Bukit Bintang, I was tailgating, and the car in front suddenly braked. Before I could even react, the active braking system "beeped" and automatically decelerated, pulling me back from the edge of a rear-end collision! Also, with 7 airbags and lane departure warning, the last time I took my family on the North-South Expressway and got distracted because the kid was fussing in the back seat, I accidentally crossed the lane marker. The system immediately vibrated the steering wheel to alert me, giving me a strong sense of safety. The exterior also deserves 5 stars! This generation of Yaris with its LED headlights and taillights is really eye-catching. When I parked near KLCC at night, it definitely got a lot of attention. The car's lines are sleeker than the previous model's, and with 16-inch wheels paired with 195 tires, it handles Malaysia's bumpy roads without feeling bulky and maintains a sporty vibe. Last weekend, I went to Melaka for a trip and parked near the Dutch Square. When I took some pictures, my friends said this little car, matched with the vintage architecture, surprisingly looked great together. The more I look at it, the more I feel I made the right choice!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris G Limited
As the owner of the 2024 Yaris G Limited, after driving it for three months, I like it more and more! Full marks for safety—Malaysia has a lot of rainy days, and unexpected situations occasionally happen on the highway. Last time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked, and the active braking directly stopped my car in time. It gave me a scare but really saved my life! Plus, with 7 airbags and lane departure warning, the system gives beep reminders when changing lanes in KL traffic jams, which adds a lot of safety. The appearance is impeccable too. This silver body looks incredibly classy under the sunlight. The LED headlights and taillights are highly recognizable at night. Every time I park at Lalaport, people take a second glance. My friends all say it’s much more refined than the old Yaris. I’d give the performance 4 stars because the 1.5L NA engine is sufficient for city driving, and the CVT is very smooth—no jerking even in stop-and-go traffic. However, climbing hills like Genting requires a heavier step on the accelerator, and the power response is a bit slower. But for family use, it’s more than enough, as it’s not meant to be a performance car. Overall, being able to buy such a safe and stylish car at this price range is really suitable for commuting in Malaysia!
