Ford Mustang 2003 Review

In the Malaysian sports car market, American muscle cars have always been a niche but highly recognizable presence—strong lines and the roar of large displacement naturally aspirated engines hit right at the heart of consumers seeking retro driving passion. The 2003 Ford Mustang Public, as a representative model in this niche market, attracts considerable attention with its classic design, abundant power, and relatively affordable positioning. This time, we got a hold of the actual car and mainly tested whether it meets the local players' needs in terms of daily driving, power performance, and practicality.
First, looking at the exterior, the 2003 Mustang Public continues the classic silhouette of the third-generation model (SN-95), with an overall style leaning towards a retro muscle vibe. The front features the iconic long hood design, paired with round headlights and a trapezoidal front grille. The Mustang emblem in the center of the grille is very striking and highly recognizable. The side profile of the car is smooth, with a waistline extending from the front to the rear, complemented by 16-inch alloy wheels which provide a stable visual impression. At the rear, the square taillight group has a red-and-white color scheme and lights up in a classic fashion. The small spoiler on the trunk lid and the dual-exhaust layout further enhance the sporty atmosphere. For the lighting system, the headlights use halogen light sources, which are sufficient for nighttime driving but slightly inferior compared to newer models' LED lighting systems.
As for the interior, the overall layout focuses on practicality, with a black-and-gray color scheme. The center console adopts a traditional T-shaped design, with hard plastic material on the upper surface that feels slightly hard to the touch, though the gap control is relatively consistent. In terms of core configurations, it is equipped with a 4.3-inch LCD instrument panel and a single-disc CD audio system that supports radio and aux input. The air conditioning uses manual controls, with moderate knob resistance that makes operation easy. The seats are wrapped in fabric material; the front seats support manual forward/backward adjustments and backrest angle adjustments, but the lumbar support is somewhat lacking. However, the comfort for long-distance driving is still acceptable.
In terms of space, the dimensions of the 2003 Mustang Public are 4610mm×1830mm×1370mm, with a wheelbase of 2570mm. The front seating area is spacious, providing approximately a fist's worth of headroom and legroom for a 180cm tall passenger. The rear seating area is relatively tight; passengers of the same height will find their legs almost touching the front seats, and there’s only three fingers’ worth of headroom. Thus, it's more suitable for short rides or storing items. When it comes to storage capacity, the front door panels can hold two bottles of water, and there’s a small storage box below the center console for items like phones or loose change. The trunk has a capacity of approximately 385L, which can fit two 20-inch suitcases, making it suitable for daily commuting or short trips. The rear seats can be folded down in a split configuration to expand the storage space, but the opening is relatively small, making it inconvenient for larger items.
In terms of performance, the 2003 Mustang Public is equipped with a 3.8L V6 naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power output of 149kW (203PS) and a maximum torque of 325N·m, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response during startup is not particularly fast, but once the RPM climbs to 2500, the torque begins to kick in and the acceleration becomes significantly noticeable. During overtaking, pressing hard on the accelerator will cause the transmission to downshift quickly, with direct power output, making highway overtaking relatively easy. As for driving modes, there are no multiple mode options, and the transmission's gear-shifting logic leans toward smoothness, ensuring minimal jerks during daily driving.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel has a relatively heavy steering feel, the steering is fairly precise, and the slack is minimal. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and rear four-link independent suspension, tuned more towards sportiness. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most minor vibrations, but when encountering speed bumps or large potholes, rear passengers will feel noticeable jolts. During cornering, the body roll is well controlled, tire grip is sufficient, and stability during high-speed cornering is good.
As for fuel consumption, in our tests under mixed-road conditions (60% city roads, 40% highways), the fuel consumption is about 12.5 liters per 100 kilometers, using 95-octane gasoline. This fuel consumption level is within the normal range for large-displacement vehicles of the same class but is higher compared to small-displacement turbocharged models. In braking performance tests, the car's 100km/h stopping distance is about 42 meters, delivering an average performance. The brake pedal feedback is clear, and the linearity is quite good.
In terms of driving comfort, noise control is average. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise become quite noticeable, mainly coming from the A-pillars and door seals. Engine noise enters the cabin when the RPM exceeds 3000, but it doesn't feel harsh; instead, it delivers a muscular car's roaring sound. Regarding seat comfort, the front seats are somewhat firm in padding but offer good wrapping. However, long drives might cause some lower back fatigue.
In summary, the core strengths of the 2003 Ford Mustang Public lie in its classic muscle car appearance, robust V6 power, and relatively budget-friendly positioning. Compared to Japanese sports cars in the same class (such as the Toyota Supra A80), it has a more affordable price and easier maintenance; however, it falls short in interior quality and modern technology features when compared to new models. Overall, it is suitable for two types of people: those who appreciate retro muscle car designs and pursue driving pleasure, and those who need a car for daily commuting with the occasional burst of spirited driving. If you're not bothered by an outdated interior and relatively higher fuel consumption and are simply looking for a car that delivers a pure driving experience, the 2003 Mustang Public is worth considering.
