In recent years, high-performance hatchbacks have gradually attracted attention from young consumers and driving enthusiasts in the local market. Among them, the Honda Civic Type R series has always been one of the benchmarks in this segment due to its pure driving experience. The 2007 Civic Type R public model we are reviewing this time, as the performance version of the 9th-generation Civic, continues Honda’s "people's sports car" tuning style as its core selling point, while slightly improving the configuration and comfort compared to its predecessor. The main purpose of our test drive is to evaluate how this classic performance car performs in daily use today and whether it still meets the needs of users who pursue driving pleasure.

In terms of exterior design, the 2007 Civic Type R public adopts a sporty design that is completely different from the regular Civic version. At the front, a large honeycomb grille paired with airflow ducts on both sides enhances the visual impact while improving cooling efficiency. On the sides, 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 225/40 R18 performance tires further emphasize its sporty appeal. The shoulder line runs smoothly from the front fender to the rear, complemented by subtly raised wheel arches, creating a streamlined and powerful overall outline. At the rear, the signature large rear spoiler is a classic feature of the Type R series. It not only improves aerodynamic performance but also makes the vehicle highly recognizable. Below, the dual round exhaust pipes on either side, paired with the diffuser-style rear bumper, further highlight its sporty attributes. For lighting systems, the front headlights adopt halogen light sources, which, while not as bright as LED, were considered mainstream for their time. The taillights feature a red-and-white design, providing high visibility when illuminated at night.

Stepping inside, the interior of the 2007 Civic Type R public focuses on sporty aesthetics and practicality. The dashboard adopts Honda's classic dual-layer design, with the upper layer displaying core information, such as RPM and speed, on a digital instrument panel, and the lower layer consisting of a physical button area with a clear layout and user-friendly operations. The interior materials primarily consist of plastic and fabric. Although it lacks a luxurious feel, all buttons and knobs have a solid tactile feedback, ensuring durability. In terms of key features, the car is equipped with a 7-inch central control screen that supports Bluetooth connectivity and USB ports. While not as feature-rich as current models, it meets basic daily needs without issue. The steering wheel features a three-spoke sporty design wrapped in leather, offering a comfortable grip, and integrates functions like volume control and cruise control. The seats are racing-style bucket seats with excellent support for dynamic driving, and their fabric surfaces provide good breathability.

In terms of space performance, the 2007 Civic Type R public has body dimensions of 4390mm×1770mm×1435mm, with a wheelbase of 2620mm. The front seating area is spacious, providing approximately a fist’s worth of headroom for a passenger with a height of 180cm after adjusting the seat. The rear seating area is relatively compact, offering about two fingers of legroom and slightly cramped headroom for passengers of the same height, making it more suitable for short trips. For storage capacity, the front door panel storage compartments, center armrest box, and cup holders provide practical space to hold daily essentials. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 340L, which can be expanded to 1150L by folding down the rear seats, meeting the needs for storing luggage on short family trips. Regarding comfort features, the rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents and USB power outlets, enhancing the passenger experience in the back seats.

In terms of power, the 2007 Honda Civic Type R public is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power output of 201 horsepower (148kW) and a peak torque of 193N·m, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. During actual driving, the engine's power output below 3000 rpm is relatively mild, making it suitable for daily commuting; when the rpm exceeds 4000, the power becomes notably vigorous, especially in the high-rpm range of 5000 to 7000, offering a strong push-back sensation and excellent acceleration performance. During starts, as long as you control the clutch and throttle well, the vehicle can accelerate smoothly and rapidly; during overtaking, downshifting and pressing the throttle deeply results in a very responsive engine, making overtaking quick and efficient. The vehicle offers both Normal and Sport driving modes; in Sport mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and gear-shifting feels tighter.

Handling and chassis performance are the core strengths of this car. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, providing clear feedback from the road, giving drivers confidence. The suspension system adopts a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension. The tuning is on the firmer side, effectively suppressing body roll and offering excellent stability when cornering. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension can quickly filter out small vibrations, but for larger potholes, the vibrations transmitted to the cabin are quite noticeable, slightly compromising comfort. In terms of braking performance, the vehicle is equipped with front ventilated disc brakes and rear disc brakes. The brake pedal feels linear, with stable braking force output, and it performs reliably during emergency braking.

In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted tests under mixed conditions, and the fuel consumption was approximately 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers, which is within an acceptable range for a performance car. Regarding noise control, the wind noise and tire noise are quite noticeable during high-speed driving, especially the tire noise, which is related to the characteristics of the performance tires. However, at low to medium speeds, the in-cabin noise control is fairly decent and does not affect normal conversations. As for seat comfort, the bucket seats provide excellent support, but they can feel a bit stiff during long drives, making them more suitable for short-distance or spirited driving scenarios.

In summary, the core highlights of the 2007 Honda Civic Type R public lie in its pure driving enjoyment, precise handling, and reliable powertrain. Compared to other models in its class, its advantages include the tactile feel of its manual transmission and the linear power delivery of its naturally aspirated engine. While it may lack the configuration and comfort of newer models, these are not the primary concerns for users seeking a great driving experience. The overall performance of this car is well-balanced, capable of fulfilling daily commuting needs while also providing plenty of driving pleasure on weekends. Its target audience mainly includes young drivers who value driving experience, prefer manual transmissions, and hold an emotional attachment to the Honda Type R series.

Overall, the 2007 Honda Civic Type R public is a classic performance hatchback that continues Honda's "affordable sports car" heritage, still offering an outstanding driving experience today. If you are a consumer who pursues pure driving pleasure and doesn’t mind the shortcomings in configuration and comfort, this car is worth considering.

The first time driving to the old neighborhood's tea restaurant, the roar of the engine made the whole street turn their heads to look!

Previously, I was driving the regular version of the Civic, but after switching to the Type R, I finally understand what "Honda Soul" truly means! The performance deserves a 5-star rating, no exaggeration—during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, weaving through traffic, with the VTEC kicking in and the revs screaming up to 6000 rpm, overtaking a slow-moving Myvi felt like a breeze. The steering is super responsive, even better than my friend's Golf GTI. The interior earns a reasonable 4-star rating. Sure, there's a bit of a plastic feel, but the Recaro bucket seats have incredible support. While driving the winding roads up to Genting Highlands on the weekend, these seats held my waist firmly during turns—ten times better than the soft, saggy seats in the regular version. Safety? No complaints—once during a rainy day on the North-South Expressway, someone lightly rear-ended me, but the rear bumper only had some minor paint scratches. The frame is solid, no doubt, deserving of a 5-star peace of mind. Any minor drawbacks? There’s a bit of jerkiness with low-speed shifting, and my leg gets tired pressing the clutch in traffic jams, but for that exhilarating power, it’s worth it! Driving this in Malaysia feels both thrilling and reassuring.

Every morning during rush hour, I confidently weave through traffic and overtake others, the air conditioning cools the car in seconds when on max, and carrying three friends in the back seat to enjoy nasi lemak is not crowded at all. I've been driving it for so long without any issues, this old buddy is truly reliable!

The 07 Civic Type R has been driven for nearly ten years, and the interior is maintained like new. The air conditioning is cold enough, so there's no need to worry about traffic jams in summer. The 1.8L VTEC engine is very confident when overtaking, but the rear seat will be a bit cramped for three big guys. The fuel consumption is about 8 in the city, which is acceptable.
