In the mid-to-large SUV market, family users often need a vehicle that balances space, features, and practicality — one that can accommodate the whole family for outings and also offers enough comfort features to make long trips enjoyable. The 2022 Hyundai Palisade 3.8 GDI Luxe 8 is a model aimed at meeting this demand. With its 3.8L naturally aspirated V6 engine, 8-seat configuration, and a full suite of comfort and safety features as its core selling points, does it truly meet the daily needs of multi-member families? In this test drive, we focus on evaluating its space flexibility, power performance, and ride comfort to assess its competitiveness in the same segment.

At first glance, the Palisade 3.8 GDI Luxe 8 impresses with its size — a 4980mm length and 1975mm width, combined with its upright front-end design, give it a stable and imposing presence. The front features a hexagonal grille filled with chrome trims, flanked by LED headlights that are seamlessly connected, while the L-shaped daytime running lights enhance its high recognizability when illuminated. The side profile has straight lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear that, while not sharp, adds depth and dimension to the side. The 20-inch alloy wheels are well-proportioned with the body, avoiding any sense of imbalance. At the rear, the horizontally integrated taillights have the Hyundai lettering embedded in the middle, and the lower bumper is accented with black plastic panels and chrome trim. Overall, the design leans towards a mature style, aligning with the positioning of a family SUV.

Upon entering the vehicle, the interior layout prioritizes practicality. The center console adopts a symmetrical design, with soft-touch materials on the upper portion and subtle silver trims for added details, giving it a sturdy feel rather than a luxurious one. The 8-inch central touchscreen sits at the top of the console, supporting touchscreen operation with a clear interface and moderate response speed. Below, physical buttons are retained for convenient operation of the air conditioning and volume controls while driving. In terms of features, this model performs commendably: the heads-up display (HUD) projects driving speed and navigation information, reducing the need to look down; the 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat comes with memory, heating, and ventilation functions, while the 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat is also equipped with heating and ventilation, ensuring comfort during long journeys. The second row consists of a 60:40 split seat design, offering sliding, reclining, and one-touch folding functionalities. The third row also features a 60:40 split design, with adequately thick seats that do not feel noticeably flimsy.

Space is one of the core advantages of the Palisade 3.8 GDI Luxe 8. Its 2900mm wheelbase ensures sufficient legroom in the front and rear rows. A passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the second row can enjoy about two fist-lengths of legroom. Although the third row is designed for children or short trips, adults can sit there with about one fist of legroom, avoiding excessive cramping. As for storage space, the standard cargo capacity is 509 liters, which can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases along with several backpacks. Folding down the third-row seats further increases the capacity, making it very convenient for transporting luggage or large items. The cabin also has plenty of storage compartments: the front center armrest box and door pockets are quite spacious, while the second row features cup holders and 220V/230V power outlets to meet passengers' charging needs.

In terms of the powertrain, this car is equipped with a 3.8L naturally aspirated V6 engine, delivering a maximum power of 295PS and a maximum torque output at 5200rpm. Paired with an AT transmission, the power response is not particularly aggressive at startup, but once you press the accelerator, the engine power is released linearly. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.8 seconds, making it sufficient for everyday overtaking or highway cruising. There are three driving modes to choose from: Normal, Eco, and Sport. In Sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, gear shifting is delayed, and power output becomes more direct; Eco mode, on the other hand, leans towards smoothness, making it suitable for daily commuting.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate weight and minimal slack, offering a lightweight feel during daily driving while becoming more stable at high speeds, providing ample confidence. The front suspension adopts a MacPherson independent suspension, while the structure of the rear suspension is not explicitly stated; however, its actual performance leans towards comfort. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension can filter out most fine vibrations, and the body does not experience significant bouncing. During cornering, body roll remains within acceptable limits, and the vehicle does not feel loose despite its tall stature. This car uses a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. Although it lacks an all-wheel-drive system, it can handle daily urban roads and light unpaved terrains, making it suitable for family use scenarios.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.8L/100km. Based on our measurements (equal distances traveled in the city and on highways), the actual fuel consumption is about 11.5L/100km. Considering the vehicle weight and engine displacement, this result is fairly average. The braking performance is also commendable. The brake pedal offers a linear feel, and the braking force is released evenly. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without noticeable nose-diving.

The details in driving comfort are well-handled. At idle, engine noise is almost inaudible. During high-speed driving, there is some wind and tire noise, but both are within an acceptable range and do not hinder conversations among passengers. The seats offer moderate support and softness, ensuring comfort during long rides. The second-row seats also feature a heating function, making them more comfortable during winter. Additionally, features like rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, and one-touch start enhance daily convenience.

In summary, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade 3.8 GDI Luxe 8's core advantages lie in its flexible space, rich comfort features, and stable power performance. Compared to competitors like the Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest, it offers more spacious second-row and third-row seats and a more comprehensive configuration. Priced at RM 338,888, it presents better value for money compared to some rivals. This car is suitable for families with multiple members, especially those who frequently travel with 5-7 people, and prioritize comfort and practicality. If you are looking for a mid-to-large SUV that balances daily commuting and family outings, the Palisade 3.8 GDI Luxe 8 is worth considering.

Last week, I took my family on a drive along Yunding Mountain Road. The 2.2T diesel engine delivers torque effortlessly at 1750 rpm for climbing, but its 10.2-second 0-100 km/h acceleration requires early throttle input for highway overtaking. The 20-inch rims paired with AT tires make the shock absorption a bit stiff, and the third row bounces over rough roads. However, the 7-seat layout is practical, with ventilated and heated second-row seats providing comfort for the elderly. The HUD and rain-sensing wipers are very convenient during rainy traffic jams. The LED headlights are bright, but the 8-inch central control screen feels a bit small. Overall, it suffices for family use, though there’s room for improvement in power and interior detailing.

The space in the previously owned CR-V was really cramped, so I switched to the Palisade specifically for its 7-seater large space—the 2900mm wheelbase is no joke. Took the whole family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, with the captain chairs in the second row fully ventilated and heated; my parents sat in the back and kept praising how much more comfortable it is compared to before! The exterior gets a full score, no complaints at all—LED headlights + 20-inch wheels make it super recognizable in KL's morning rush hour traffic, and my friends said it looks like a million-ringgit SUV. The 3.8L naturally aspirated engine accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and feels lively. It overtakes easily with just a press of the pedal on highways, but the 12L+ fuel consumption in city traffic is a bit higher than the official 10.8L, which stings a little. However, the HUD (Heads-up Display), ventilated and heated seats in both front and rear rows are incredibly awesome, especially considering Malaysia's year-round high temperatures—you don’t need to wait for the seats to cool down after getting in. The only small downside is that the central screen is just 8 inches; if it were 2 inches bigger, it’d be even better!

Previously, I drove a CR-V, but I switched to the Palisade primarily for its 7-seater large space—on weekends, it can take the whole family to Genting Highlands. With second-row heating and ventilation + one-touch folding, it keeps both the elderly and children comfortable. The trunk can fit 3 suitcases + camping gear and still have space left. The 2.2 diesel turbo is incredibly smooth during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic, with sufficient low-end torque that minimizes frequent shifting. Fuel consumption of 8.8L is more economical than expected. The interior deserves a 5-star rating: the front-row 12-way power seats come with memory functions, and the HUD + wireless charging is incredibly convenient. The only shortcoming is that the 8-inch central control screen is smaller than competitors'. For safety, a score of 4 is appropriate: 6 airbags + lane change assist is sufficient, but the lack of a 360-degree camera means extra caution is needed when reversing in rainy weather. The exterior is stylish, with LED light clusters extremely eye-catching during Malaysian evenings, and the 20-inch wheels are very stable. Overall, it's a practical and excellent choice for Malaysian families!

Last Saturday, I took my parents and two nephews to an orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands to pick starfruits. Just after leaving the Kuala Lumpur city area, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The automatic rain-sensing wipers adjusted their frequency swiftly, so visibility wasn’t affected. While climbing the mountain, the 3.8L naturally aspirated engine maintained steady power without the sluggishness of smaller engines that tend to "struggle to breathe". However, the transmission was a bit slow to respond during rapid acceleration, which loses points. In the third row, my nephews were clamoring to open the sunroof. Although the single sunroof isn't as spacious as a panoramic one, pulling the sunshade closed still kept it cool enough. The rear heated seats weren't used, but the ventilated seats were lifesavers in the humid weather—my parents sat in the second row, and when they got out, their backs weren't sweaty. The fuel consumption was over 11 liters, higher than the official rating, especially noticeable during city congestion.

Last week, I took my whole family to Genting Highlands. Just after passing the mountain foothills, we encountered a rainstorm. On the slippery mountain roads, the low torque of the 2.2 diesel turbo performed steadily, providing power at 1750 rpm to climb hills effortlessly. However, its acceleration was slightly slower compared to a gasoline car. In the rainstorm, the lane change assist kept flashing to alert of approaching vehicles at the rear sides, while the ESP silently stabilized the car body. The kids in the back row slept soundly. On the way downhill, the braking was linear, and the ventilated seats whisked away the sweat. However, the third row was a bit cramped for two adults. The fuel consumption of 8.8 liters per 100 km on highways was pleasantly surprising. The safety features provided a strong sense of security, and while the performance is sufficient for daily use, it's somewhat lacking for aggressive driving.
