The competition in the E-class luxury SUV market has become increasingly intense in recent years. Consumers not only demand ample space and comfort but also have higher expectations for power and features. As Volkswagen's flagship SUV, the 2024 Touareg R-Line has attracted significant attention since its launch in Malaysia with its 3.0T V6 engine, all-wheel drive, and full smart configurations. The question remains—can it secure its position in the same price range? This time, we got a test drive vehicle to evaluate whether its overall performance matches its flagship positioning and to assess its practicality for daily use.

At first glance, the Touareg R-Line's exterior is highly recognizable. Its overall lines are rather robust, with a large trapezoidal front grille filled with black honeycomb pattern embellishments. The grille is connected to the LED headlights on either side, enhancing its horizontal visual width. The side profile of the car features smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the fender to the rear, increasing its muscular feel. The 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, paired with 285/45 R20 tires, further enhance its sporty vibe. The rear design is clean, featuring a through-type LED taillight design with high visibility when lit, while the dual exhaust layout on both sides reflects the sporty positioning of the R-Line.

Upon entering the cabin, the interior design leans towards luxury and technology. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, combined with metal trims and piano black panels, delivering a pleasant tactile experience. The 15-inch floating central control screen is the visual centerpiece, boasting high interface fluidity and supporting CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The fully digital instrument cluster is clear and offers multiple theme modes, displaying navigation, vehicle status, and other information. In terms of features, the front 12-way power adjustable seats come with heating and memory functions, offering excellent support and comfort. Rear air conditioning vents, USB ports, and other practical features are well-equipped, while the 40:20:40 split-fold rear seats allow for flexible space extension.

The space performance fully meets the standards of an E-class SUV. With body dimensions of 4878mm×1984mm×1717mm and a wheelbase of 2899mm, a 180cm-tall passenger has a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the front seat to a comfortable position. The rear seat offers more than two fists' worth of legroom and one fist for headroom, comfortably seating three adults without feeling cramped. The trunk has a regular volume of 810L, which can be expanded to over 1800L by folding down the rear seats, easily accommodating bulky items like strollers and suitcases. Additionally, there are multiple storage compartments throughout the cabin, such as door pockets and a central armrest box, providing convenient storage for daily small items.

In terms of power, the 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 250kW (340PS) and a peak torque of 450N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system. The power response at startup is very prompt, and the throttle pedal is calibrated to be linear, providing good acceleration with a light press. Mid to high-speed acceleration remains robust, and during overtaking, pressing the throttle pedal deeply prompts the transmission to downshift quickly, ensuring continuous power output. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6 seconds indeed provides a thrill of rapid acceleration. The driving modes include Eco, Comfort, Sport, and others. Switching to Sport mode makes the throttle response more sensitive, the transmission stays in lower gears, and the power delivery becomes more aggressive.

In terms of handling, the steering is precise, with minimal play. It feels light at low speeds and steady at high speeds, giving a strong sense of confidence. The chassis features front and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort while maintaining adequate support. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, and the body doesn't experience noticeable jolts. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the vehicle maintains a stable posture. The full-time four-wheel-drive system performs excellently on slippery road surfaces, distributing power effectively and improving driving stability. In terms of fuel consumption, the measured average is about 10.5L/100km under mixed driving conditions. Considering the 3.0T engine and the weight of the vehicle, this result is quite reasonable.

Comfort details in the driving experience are well-executed. The cabin offers good noise insulation, with wind and tire noise kept to acceptable levels during high-speed driving. The seat cushioning is soft, ensuring comfort even during long rides. Additionally, safety features such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking are fully equipped, providing a lot of convenience for daily driving.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2024 Touareg R-Line are quite clear: the 3.0T V6 engine delivers robust power, and the full-time four-wheel-drive system enhances driving stability. Its luxurious interior and high level of configuration place it among the top in its class, and the spaciousness meets the needs of family users. Compared to similarly priced models like the BMW X5 or the Mercedes GLE, it offers a more affordable price and richer features, making it a better value for money.

This vehicle is suitable for families that value power, space, and comfort, or consumers who need a vehicle for both business and family use. If you are looking for the quality of a luxury brand while also wanting comprehensive features and strong performance, the Touareg R-Line is worth considering.

Overall, the 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line is a well-rounded E-segment SUV. It strikes an excellent balance between performance, space, configuration, and comfort, making it a practical choice among vehicles in the same price range.

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line, after driving it for three months, I like it more and more! First, let’s talk about the performance: the 3.0T V6 engine offers amazing power for overtaking on Malaysia’s highways, and climbing the steep slopes of Genting Highlands is effortless. However, in city traffic, the fuel consumption is about 12 liters per 100km, slightly higher than the official 9.5 liters, so I’d rate it 4 stars. The interior deserves full marks! The 15-inch central control screen and fully digital instrument cluster are packed with technology, and the Dynaudio sound system is fantastic for listening to local Malaysian songs. The 12-way electric seats with memory function are incredibly convenient as they save me the trouble of adjusting every time I get in. In terms of safety, it’s reliable with 6 airbags and ACC cruise control. One time on the LDP highway, I almost rear-ended another car, but the emergency braking system intervened just in time. However, the lane-keeping system occasionally misjudges, so I'll give that 4 stars. As for the exterior, the R-Line package looks very sporty, and the LED headlights are bright even on rainy days. However, the black paint tends to attract dust easily, so frequent washing is necessary; I’d rate it 4 stars as well. Overall, this car is truly fitting for use in Malaysia, whether it’s for daily commuting or weekend road trips to the east coast. It’s absolutely fantastic!

As the owner of a 2024 Touareg R-Line, I’d like to share my feelings after driving it for three months! Firstly, the interior: the genuine leather seats and metallic trims of the R-Line feel premium. The 15-inch central control screen has had no lag even under Malaysia’s blazing sun. However, the visible plastic seams on the rear air-conditioning vents are a slight drawback, so I’d deduct some points. Overall, I’m fairly satisfied. On safety, with sudden braking on Malaysia’s highways and motorbikes weaving unpredictably in the city, its ACC adaptive cruise control is a lifesaver on the North-South Highway. The automatic braking system once helped me narrowly avoid a Grab motorbike suddenly changing lanes. The six airbags and 360-degree cameras also make parking in tight car parks like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur less stressful. The only small issue is that the lane-keeping sometimes misjudges roadside posts, and I need to manually adjust occasionally. Overall, the safety performance feels solid. As for the exterior, the R-Line’s sporty kit really stands out among SUVs, and the LED headlights are bright enough during Penang’s rainy and foggy nights. Its 20-inch rims with wide tires drive steadily, but the only minor downside is the wide body, requiring extra caution when navigating narrow village roads. That said, the car truly turns heads! Overall, all three aspects are quite satisfactory, living up to the price point.

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line, after driving it for three months, I’m truly impressed with its safety features and luxurious interior! Let's start with safety: Malaysia experiences frequent rainy days, and unexpected situations often occur on the highway. Once, on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked, and the automatic braking system intervened immediately, helping me avoid a collision—it was such a close call that my heart nearly stopped! When stuck in KL traffic, the adaptive cruise control (ACC) follows cars steadily, and the lane-keeping system doesn’t “wrestle with the steering wheel” like some other cars. With six airbags and a 360-degree camera, I always feel assured when driving my family. Now about the interior—it feels completely like a luxury car! The 15-inch central control screen operates smoothly, and the Dynaudio sound system delivers such excellent sound quality that even when stuck in traffic, playing a Malay song sounds better than my home audio system. The 12-way adjustable front seats are a blessing for someone like me who has back issues; after setting it to my memory position, even long drives are comfortable. Rear-seat passengers get an independent air conditioning system, ensuring the kids in the back don’t complain about the heat. The 40:20:40 foldable rear seat design made it easy to carry camping gear on a recent trip to Genting Highlands, with space to spare. The stitching and materials in the interior feel premium, and friends who sit in it often ask if it’s a million-ringgit car—it truly offers great value for the price!

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line for almost three months now, I'm quite satisfied with both safety and performance under Malaysian road conditions. Talking about safety first, I would rate it 4 stars because it is indeed solid. Malaysia has frequent rainy days, and on highways, you occasionally encounter water puddles. The vehicle's stability control system reacts swiftly and doesn’t skid. Last time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the automatic braking system immediately engaged, helping me avoid a rear-end collision. That moment really gave me a scare. However, there was an incident on a rural road where the lane departure warning was a bit too sensitive, alerting me for just slightly touching the line. It would be better if the sensitivity could be adjusted. As for performance, the 3.0T engine feels fantastic for overtaking on Malaysian highways. Its 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6 seconds is no joke; stepping on the gas gives a real sense of push-back. However, in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, the 9.5 fuel consumption is indeed a bit high, and with the recent increase in fuel prices, it's somewhat tough on the wallet. But on highways, the fuel consumption can drop to around 8, which is still acceptable. Overall, the performance in these two areas is quite good and meets my expectations, though there’s still room for improvement in some details.

During the morning rush hour, the power of the 3.0T engine kicks in instantly, absolutely not sluggish; on weekends, carrying the whole family to the suburbs, three adults sit comfortably in the back row, and the trunk still has space after loading camping gear. However, the fuel consumption is a bit high when stuck in city traffic, but with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty + a fully equipped safety system, it feels reassuring to drive!
