Jaguar I‑PACE Review

As Malaysia's electric vehicle market matures rapidly, competition in the D-segment pure electric SUV category is increasingly focusing on "balancing a luxury experience and cost-performance." The 2023 Jaguar I-PACE Black LE is a product born of this trend—it retains the iconic performance genes of the I-PACE family, while aiming to attract consumers who seek both brand appeal and pragmatic configurations through its blacked-out exterior kit and more accessible pricing. The core objective of this test drive is to verify whether this Black LE version can find the optimal balance between "sportiness, comfort, and price," providing potential buyers with an intuitive reference.
From a distance, the silhouette of the I-PACE Black LE maintains the crossover SUV stance of the first-generation model. The low roofline, coupled with its 2139mm width, makes it appear sportier compared to many SUVs in the same class. The most noticeable change comes from the blacked-out detailing: the original chrome trims have been replaced with glossy black, including the front grille surround, window trims, mirror caps, and roof rails. Paired with the dark paintwork of the car body, the overall style appears more composed and professional. The front features sharp LED headlights, and the internal J-shaped daytime running lights offer high recognizability when illuminated. The horizontally laid-out LED tail lights at the rear echo the blacked-out trim strip (black on the Black LE version), and the black rear diffuser below enhances its performance-oriented feel. Notably, the Black LE version also features exclusive black multi-spoke wheels, further reinforcing its sporty visual language.
Once inside, the first impression is the consistent luxury aesthetic that Jaguar is known for. The interior predominantly uses black as the main color, with seats wrapped in faux leather featuring diamond stitching details on the sides, providing a soft touch and decent support. The dashboard layout is clear, with a 10-inch touchscreen on top and a 5-inch combination of physical buttons and a touch panel below, which are responsible for air conditioning and vehicle settings. The operation logic is straightforward and user-friendly. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster displays comprehensive information and can switch between classic and sport modes. The HUD head-up display projects key information, such as speed and navigation, onto the windshield, enhancing driving safety. In terms of features, keyless entry, electrically adjustable front seats, automatic air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, and more come as standard, fully meeting daily usage needs.
In terms of space performance, the I-PACE Black LE features a wheelbase of 2990mm, providing ample rear legroom. A passenger standing at 175cm tall can sit with two fists' worth of space between their knees and the front seatback. However, due to the coupe-like roofline, headroom is slightly compromised, leaving only about a fist's distance, though it still avoids feeling claustrophobic. The rear seats are equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB ports, and the nearly flat floor ensures that the comfort of the middle passenger is not compromised when three people are seated in the back. In terms of storage capacity, the front center armrest console offers adequate space, while the door pockets can accommodate two bottles of mineral water. The trunk has a standard capacity of 656L, which can be expanded to 1453L by folding down the rear seats, making it sufficient to handle luggage needs for family short trips.
Powertrain-wise, the Black LE version is equipped with dual front and rear motors, delivering a combined power of 400PS and a peak torque of 696N·m, paired with a full-time all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is just 4.8 seconds. During actual driving, the moment you press the accelerator pedal, you can feel the explosive power of the electric motor. The start is swift and linear, and mid-to-high-range acceleration is equally responsive. When overtaking, simply press the accelerator firmly, and the power responds immediately, giving you full confidence. Driving modes include Comfort, Sport, and Eco. In Comfort mode, power output is gentle, suitable for daily commuting. In Sport mode, throttle sensitivity is enhanced, and the steering feel becomes heavier, offering more driving fun. Eco mode limits power output but effectively extends the range.
The chassis tuning is one of I-PACE’s highlights, featuring front double wishbones and rear multi-link independent suspension. It is generally firm but not without comfort. When driving in urban roads, the suspension swiftly filters out vibrations from speed bumps or minor shocks, without transmitting excessive harshness. During high-speed cornering, body roll is well controlled, coupled with the all-wheel-drive system, providing excellent tire grip and outstanding stability. However, on continuously bumpy unpaved roads, the firm suspension might make rear passengers feel some vibration, which is an inevitable compromise of sporty tuning.
In terms of range and energy consumption, the official WLTP range is 470km. During this test drive that primarily involved urban roads with the air conditioner turned on and in Comfort mode, the actual remaining range decreased by 115km after driving 100km, achieving around 87% of the expected result, which matches expectations. Under fast-charging conditions, it takes 8.6 hours to charge from 0% to 80% (Note: This seems to be a clarification error; actual Jaguar I-PACE fast charging typically takes 40 minutes to charge to 80%, but the data is provided based on official information). Slow charging takes longer and is more suitable for home charging setups. The noise control performance is excellent; wind noise and tire noise are well suppressed at high speeds, and only during rapid acceleration is the faint sound of the electric motor audible, which does not affect driving comfort.
Compared to the HSE version of the same series, the Black LE version shows almost no difference in core powertrain and configuration—both are equipped with dual motors, all-wheel drive, HUD heads-up display, and a 12.3-inch instrument panel as standard. The main difference lies only in the black-out exterior package and price. The Black LE is priced at RM 460,800, which is RM 38,000 cheaper than the HSE version, presenting an obvious value advantage. Compared to the same class Tesla Model Y Performance, the I-PACE Black LE has advantages in luxury and chassis refinement but falls slightly short in range and intelligent features. When compared to the Audi e-tron, it is more attractive in terms of price and acceleration performance.
In summary, the core advantage of the 2023 Jaguar I-PACE Black LE is its “balance” — sporty exterior design, powerful performance, adequate range, and practical configurations. Coupled with a more affordable price compared to the HSE version, it stands out as a representative of “luxury and value” in the D-Segment pure electric SUVs. It is suitable for consumers who desire the sophistication of a luxury brand while focusing on everyday driving experience, especially family users aged 30-45 or young business professionals. For the former, it meets the space needs of family outings, while for the latter, Jaguar's brand power showcases status.
Overall, the I-PACE Black LE is not a vehicle that pursues "extreme range" or "extreme intelligence," but rather a pure electric SUV that aims to "impress users with luxury and performance." If you're looking for a pure electric SUV that can meet daily commuting needs, offer driving pleasure on weekends, and don't want to compromise on brand and configuration, then the I-PACE Black LE is worth considering.
