In recent years, the mid-size SUV market in Malaysia has been booming, with family users increasingly demanding spaciousness and high-end configurations. The 2015 Kia Sorento public, as a popular model in this segment, has attracted significant attention with its balanced space performance, practical features, and reliable powertrain. This time, we got a test drive of this car, aiming to assess through static experience and dynamic testing whether it can genuinely meet the daily needs of local family users and whether its performance lives up to its market positioning.

From the exterior, the design of the 2015 Sorento public leans towards a steady and solid style, featuring smooth but non-bulky lines. The front adopts Kia's signature "Tiger Nose" grille, which is filled with chrome strips inside and is paired with well-designed front headlights on both sides, giving it a distinct visual identity. The side of the car showcases a waistline that stretches from the front fender to the rear, complemented by an inward contour along the lower side of the doors to avoid monotony. The 17-inch alloy wheels are appropriately sized, and the tires are comfort-oriented road tires, fitting for its family use positioning. At the rear, the horizontally designed tail lights are connected with a chrome strip, visually widening the rear end, while the silver skid plate on the lower rear bumper adds a touch of rugged SUV style. As for the lighting system, the headlights come standard with halogen light sources, which, while moderate in brightness, are adequate for everyday use. High-end models offer optional xenon headlights.

Sitting inside the vehicle, the first impression is that the interior layout is relatively simple, predominantly in dark tones, with small silver trims scattered throughout for contrast, creating a practical atmosphere. The dashboard is layered, with the multimedia screen area above and the air conditioning controls below. The physical button layout is clear, making it easy to operate. As for materials, the upper part of the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but the finish is fairly meticulous, without obvious roughness. The inner sides of the door panels, where the arms frequently touch, are wrapped in soft materials, providing a certain level of comfort. In terms of core features, this model is equipped with a 7-inch touch screen that supports Bluetooth connectivity and a reversing camera, with responsiveness being fairly smooth. The seats are made of fabric, and the front seats support manual adjustment. Although lumbar support is not very pronounced, long-term seating is not overly tiring. The rear row comes with its own air vents and two USB charging ports, convenient for rear passengers to use.

Space performance is a key point for family SUVs. The 2015 Sorento public has a body size of 4685mm×1885mm×1700mm, with a wheelbase of 2700mm, which is average among models in its class. Front-row seating is relatively spacious, with a height of 175cm tester having a headroom clearance of one fist and two fingers after adjusting the seat. Rear-row space is also commendable, with approximately two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. Additionally, the floor in the middle seat position has a minimal hump, providing decent comfort even for the middle passenger when three people are seated in the rear. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk offers a standard capacity of 551L and can expand to 1662L with the second-row seats folded, which is sufficient to accommodate luggage or large items for family trips.

For the powertrain, we test-drove the 2.4L naturally aspirated engine version, which delivers a maximum output of 175 horsepower and a peak torque of 225 N·m, paired with a 6-speed manual automatic transmission. During daily driving, the engine's power output is relatively linear, with no sluggishness during startup, and the acceleration process is smooth, making it suitable for urban commuting. When switched to sport mode, the gear-shifting logic of the transmission becomes more aggressive, with faster downshifting and more responsive power output when overtaking. However, at high speeds, you can still feel the limitations of the naturally aspirated engine's power delivery. In terms of driving modes, in addition to the standard economy, normal, and sport modes, there is also a snow mode available, making it more stable on slippery roads.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a moderate level of resistance, with minimal play, making it relatively easy to handle during daily driving. At high speeds, the steering wheel becomes steadier, which provides a good sense of confidence. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension with a focus on comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor vibrations, and the vehicle body does not experience significant bouncing. However, during sharp turns at high speeds, body roll is more noticeable. After all, it is a family SUV, and handling is not its primary focus.

As for fuel consumption, we conducted tests in mixed driving conditions, with city roads accounting for 60% and highways for 40%, and the final measured fuel consumption was 9.2L/100km. This figure is normal among SUVs with a 2.4L engine in the same class. While it is not particularly fuel-efficient, it won't impose a significant fuel cost burden on users either. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal has a relatively linear feel, and the braking force output is even. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without obvious forward pitching, with a measured 100-0km/h braking distance of about 42 meters, meeting the standards for a family car.

In terms of ride comfort, this car performs quite well in noise control. When driving on city roads, both tire noise and wind noise are relatively low. While wind noise becomes slightly more apparent during high-speed driving, it does not affect normal conversations among passengers inside the car. The seat padding is relatively soft with moderate support, ensuring long-duration rides are not tiring. It is worth mentioning that the rear seatback angles are adjustable, allowing rear passengers to find a more comfortable sitting position.

In summary, the core strengths of the 2015 Kia Sorento public lie in its balanced space utilization, practical configurations, and reliable powertrain. Compared to competitors in the same class, its space is not inferior to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. While it does not offer too many flashy features, its basic configurations are comprehensive, making its cost performance relatively outstanding. Overall, this car is well-suited for family users who value space practicality and reliability. It is versatile enough for daily commuting and family outings. If you are someone who pursues balanced performance and prefers a more understated design, the 2015 Sorento public would be a good choice.

Previously, I drove a small Japanese car and always felt the space was cramped. After switching to the 2015 Sorento Public, I can finally take the whole family out comfortably! The exterior gets full marks — the streamlined body turns heads on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. In terms of safety, the ESP intervenes promptly during heavy rain on the highway; it's just a pity there's no automatic braking. The interior materials are solid, and the center console layout is reasonable, though it feels slightly plasticky. During the morning peak traffic, the 2.4L engine delivers smooth power, and the air conditioning cools efficiently. When heading to Genting Highlands on weekends, it climbs hills effortlessly, though the third row feels a bit cramped after sitting for a long time. Overall, this car performs very steadily on Malaysian roads and has great value for money!

The 2015 Sorento has been driven for almost ten years, and its appearance is still attractive. It is super stable on the highway during heavy rain. However, the leather seats look a bit aged, but the third row can seat three friends comfortably. It's super convenient to take the family out for coconut rice on the weekend!

After almost ten years of driving the Sorento, it's stable when starting in city traffic and not sluggish when overtaking on highways. With three elders sitting in the back for tea, it's not cramped, though the leather seats do need the windows opened to cool off after being exposed to sunlight. The safety features provide a strong sense of security, making it truly worry-free for family use.

Last Saturday, I drove my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just as we got on the mountain road, a torrential downpour hit. The wipers were working furiously, but visibility was still poor. Suddenly, the small truck ahead braked sharply. I slammed on the brakes, and the car stopped steadily—ESC really did its job, no skidding. However, my wife in the passenger seat complained: "This cheap fabric seat is so stuffy and sticky on my legs, even with the air conditioning on full blast, it's useless!" My son in the back seat also shouted, "Mom, I hit my head on the grab handle on the car ceiling!" Full marks for interior design? Perhaps the reviewers back then never sat on these seats during the rainy season in Malaysia!
