Land Rover Range Rover Evoque 2020 Review

In recent years, the competition in the luxury compact SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers not only seek the sense of sophistication brought by a premium brand but also value practicality for daily use. The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque P200 was designed to target such demands. It continues the iconic family design language while optimizing its configurations and space. Priced at RM 426,828, it emphasizes balance more compared to its competitors in the same category. In this test drive, we focused on examining its performance in daily driving, spatial practicality, and whether its features match its luxury positioning to see if it suits urban users seeking understated luxury.
Approaching the Evoque P200, you’ll first be drawn to its exterior. It retains the classic floating roof design of the Range Rover family, paired with large 245/45 R20 wheels. The side profile is sleek with a hint of robustness. The front features a honeycomb grille flanked by headlights incorporating both LED and Xenon lighting, with sharp and highly recognizable shapes. The daytime running lights, when illuminated, add a strong sense of modern technology. At the rear, the horizontally designed taillights echo the shape of the front while the silver skid plate beneath the rear bumper adds a touch of off-road appeal. The vehicle measures 4,371mm in length, 2,100mm in width, and 1,649mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,681mm. Among compact SUVs, these dimensions are slightly above average, ensuring both flexibility and adequate interior space.
Opening the door, you are immediately hit with a sense of luxury from the interior. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with metal trim, offering a delicate texture. A 10-inch touchscreen is located at the center of the dashboard, featuring a simple and user-friendly interface, while retaining some physical buttons below for easier operation by touch. The multifunction steering wheel comes with paddle shifters as standard, and the HUD (head-up display) enhances convenience when driving. The driver’s seat is equipped with 8-way power adjustment and memory functions, while the passenger seat also features 8-way power adjustment. The leather seats provide good support and cushioning, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding the trunk capacity from 410L, which is sufficient for storing a few suitcases or a baby stroller. As for features, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, a 360-degree parking camera, automatic parking assist, and a 220V/230V power outlet are all standard, significantly boosting practicality.
Space is one of the highlights of the Evoque P200. The front row provides approximately a fist and two fingers of headroom, with ample legroom, ensuring that passengers up to 180cm tall won’t feel cramped. In the rear, passengers of the same height will find around two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom—though not extraordinarily spacious, it is more than adequate for everyday family use. In terms of storage, door pockets can fit two 500ml water bottles, the center armrest box has moderate capacity, and the front row includes a wireless charging pad and USB ports, showcasing thoughtful design details.
Starting the vehicle reveals a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum power output of 200PS, with a peak torque that kicks in between 1,300-4,500rpm, paired with an AT gearbox. During daily driving, the throttle response is agile, making for a quick start. Shifting is smooth at low speeds, with almost no noticeable jerk. Switching to sports mode results in more direct power delivery. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply provides a quick response from the engine, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.5 seconds, which is perfectly adequate for daily needs. The chassis uses front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. While driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, ensuring passengers feel minimal jolts. The steering is precise with little play, and body roll is well-controlled when cornering. Overall, the handling performance ranks high among SUVs.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.4L/100km. We drove approximately 50km each in urban traffic and highway conditions, and the actual fuel consumption was around 10.2L/100km. Considering the vehicle weight of 2430kg, this performance is at a normal level. Noise control is excellent, with wind noise and tire noise effectively isolated during high-speed driving. The Meridian 11-speaker audio system delivers clear sound quality, further enhancing driving comfort. The braking system uses lightweight discs, offering responsive braking performance. The vehicle remains stable during emergency braking, providing a strong sense of safety.
In summary, the main advantage of the 2020 Range Rover Evoque P200 lies in its balance. It has the brand backing and luxurious interior associated with Land Rover, while also offering practical space and configurations. Its performance meets daily needs, and the chassis tuning takes both comfort and handling into account. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA, the Evoque P200 has a greater edge in off-road capability and interior luxury while also being more affordable. This vehicle is suitable for family users who value brand quality and practicality in daily use, or for young professionals seeking understated luxury. If you don't require extreme power but want a luxurious SUV that can handle both city commuting and occasional light off-roading, the Evoque P200 is a good choice.
