In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's executive SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers not only desire the prestige of luxury brands but also expect balanced performance and practical features. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport P400 Dynamic SE, launched in October 2023, is aimed precisely at meeting these demands. As a midsize SUV under the brand that balances sportiness and luxury, it not only features a 3.0T mild hybrid engine but also includes standard configurations like air suspension and Meridian sound system, directly appealing to users who value quality and driving experience. In this test drive, we focused on evaluating whether its dynamic performance matches the "Sport" positioning and the practicality of its luxurious features in daily use.

From the exterior, the new car continues the minimalist design of the Range Rover family but incorporates more sporty details. The front features a blacked-out mesh grille, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, while the thin light strips of the daytime running lights enhance its recognizability. The side profile boasts smooth lines, with a waistline stretching from the A-pillar to the rear to create a sloping stance, and the 22-inch large wheels further accentuate the sporty vibe. At the back, the through-type LED tail lights offer high recognition when lit, and the dual-side dual-exhaust design in the lower rear bumper hints at its performance capabilities. The overall design maintains the steadiness of a luxury SUV while enhancing its sporty attributes through detailed adjustments.

Stepping inside, the luxurious feel of the interior mainly comes from the materials used—extensive use of soft leather wraps on the dashboard and door panels, complemented by metal trims and piano black surfaces, provide a delicate touch. The central control layout is centered around a 13.1-inch curved Pivi Pro touchscreen, which is responsive, with a clear menu logic and quick access to common functions like air conditioning and navigation. Features such as the HUD head-up display, a fully digital instrument cluster, multifunction steering wheel (with paddle shifters), are all standard, enhancing the technological feel. For seating, the front seats support electric adjustment, heating/ventilation, and memory functions, while the rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split and the backrest angle can be adjusted, effectively reducing fatigue during long journeys. In addition, the panoramic sunroof and rear independent air conditioning enhance the comfort of rear passengers.

In terms of space, the car measures 4946mm in length, 2209mm in width, and 1820mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2997mm. Front-row space is ample, offering a headroom of about one fist for a 180cm-tall individual after adjusting the seat. The rear-row legroom reaches two fists, with headroom about one fist, ensuring that even three passengers seated in the back will not feel cramped. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 835L, which can be further expanded by folding the rear seats down, meeting the needs for family trips or transporting large items. The design of cabin storage spaces is also practical, with a central armrest compartment offering considerable capacity, a door pocket accommodating two 500ml bottles, and a wireless charging pad in the front row.

Regarding performance, the car is powered by a 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 48V mild hybrid system, generating a maximum output of 294kW (400PS) and a peak torque of 550N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the mild hybrid system provides auxiliary power during takeoff, making the start quick and smooth. When switched to sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive. Pressing the accelerator deeply results in a noticeable push-back effect with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.7 seconds, instilling strong confidence during overtaking. The transmission logic is clear, with smooth gear shifts and almost no noticeable jerks.

One of the highlights of this test drive is the handling performance. The new car is equipped with front and rear air suspension, which supports height adjustment. The suspension is tuned for comfort during daily driving, effectively filtering out most road bumps. When entering corners, the suspension automatically stiffens, and the body roll is well-controlled. Paired with precise steering, the handling ranks among the top in its class for SUVs. The performance of the four-wheel-drive system is also commendable. On mildly unpaved roads, the vehicle handles with ease. However, as a city SUV, it is better suited for everyday roads and light off-road scenarios. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.4L/100km. During the actual test drive, urban fuel consumption was about 11L/100km, and highway consumption was around 8.5L/100km, indicating an average performance.

In terms of driving comfort, the car has good noise control. Wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable during high-speed driving. The Meridian sound system delivers clear audio quality, further isolating external disturbances. The brake system responds linearly with short and stable stopping distances, providing ample safety reassurance. The seats offer good wrapping and support, ensuring long drives are not tiring. The energy recovery system integrates smoothly, without affecting driving smoothness.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 Range Rover Sport P400 Dynamic SE lies in its balance—luxurious interior materials, a wealth of standard features, good performance capability, and a comfortable driving experience. Compared with competitors in the same class, such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, its standard configurations, including air suspension and Meridian sound system, provide better value for money. This car is suitable for two types of users: families focusing on luxury quality and driving experience, and mid-to-high-end consumers seeking brand identity while balancing business uses.

In summary, the 2023 Range Rover Sport P400 Dynamic SE is an executive SUV that simultaneously satisfies luxury, sportiness, and practicality. It has no obvious shortcomings and is suited for users who appreciate a high-quality lifestyle and require a well-rounded performance.

Last week, during the heavy rain, I drove to Genting Highlands. The 22-inch tires handled the waterlogged mountain roads as steady as a ship. Accelerating in 5.7 seconds to overtake trucks was effortless, but the fuel consumption in eco mode was still 1L higher than the official 9.4L, deducting 1 point. The Meridian sound system drowned out the rain noise, and the ventilated seats prevented sweating. Unfortunately, the faux leather lacks a bit of luxury. The automatic braking saved me in a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur, and the heads-up display allowed me to navigate without looking down. The car grabs attention everywhere, especially with its silver body paired with black accents, worth 5 points.

This big guy looks intimidating, but it's surprisingly easy to drive — during the morning rush, just a touch of throttle is enough to overtake, and it's as stable as glued to the ground on the highway. Three big guys can sit in the back without feeling cramped, and the 22-inch tires handle speed bumps without much jolting. The fuel consumption is 2-3 points higher than the official figures, but with this power and presence, it's worth it!

Never hesitated to overtake during the morning rush hour, the 5.7-second 0-100km/h acceleration is quite impressive! The 22-inch tires remain stable even on bumpy roads, and the air suspension absorbs shocks exceptionally well. Turn on the Meridian sound system, and even traffic jams become enjoyable. However, the car is big, and narrow parking spaces rely on automatic parking. The fuel consumption of 9.4L in the city is quite a pleasant surprise.

Previously, I owned the older X5 model, and I switched to the Range Rover Sport P400 Dynamic SE mainly for its British style and the smoothness of its hybrid performance. Exterior gets 4 points, mainly because the side profile is a bit conservative, not as tough as the older model, but the LED lights are very bright on Kuala Lumpur's night roads. Interior definitely gets 5 points, with the Meridian sound system and panoramic sunroof; taking the family to Genting Highlands on weekends is amazing, reclining the rear electric seats while listening to music. Safety gets 4 points; the ACC keeps a steady following on Penang highways, though the automatic parking sometimes glitches in the Twin Towers' underground garage. The downside is the 9.4L fuel consumption, which goes up to 12L in city traffic, but with the 3.0T + hybrid accelerating to 5.7 seconds, overtaking during morning rush hour is a breeze. Overall, it's worth the price, especially since Land Rover's all-terrain system can handle Malaysia's rainy season on bumpy roads.
