Lexus ES 2019 Review

The Malaysian luxury midsize sedan market has always been a battleground between brand power and cost-effectiveness. Consumers want a reliable luxury experience but don't want to pay excessive premiums for redundant configurations. The 2019 Lexus ES 250 Premium, as the mid-range version of the ES series, takes "balanced luxury" as its core selling point. It retains the signature comfort of Lexus while meeting mainstream needs in terms of configuration. In this test drive, we focused on assessing its actual performance in daily commuting and family travel scenarios to see if it could be a practical choice for entry-level luxury users.
From a distance, the 2019 ES 250 Premium continues Lexus' family-style spindle grille design, which is wide in size and features a smoked finish. Paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, it boasts high recognizability. The lines on the side of the body are smooth, with a clean and crisp waistline stretching from the front fender to the rear. The 18-inch multi-spoke wheels look both steady and dynamic. At the rear, a chrome trim strip runs across the width of the vehicle, connecting the tail lights. When lit, the LED tail lights display a unique L-shaped light strip. The overall design strikes a balance between the stability of a luxury car and youthful elements.
Opening the door, the interior quality becomes immediately apparent. The center console features an asymmetrical design that tilts slightly toward the driver for easier operation. The materials include a large amount of soft-touch leather combined with wood grain trim, offering a refined tactile sensation. The instrument panel is a fully digital display, providing clear and easy-to-read information that changes according to the selected driving mode. The center console screen is 8 inches and supports touchscreen operations. While it's smaller than the 12.3-inch screen available on the Luxury version, it sufficiently meets everyday needs like navigation and music. As for configurations, the 10-way electrically adjustable front seats come with a memory function to quickly find the most suitable seating position. The rear seats support electric reclining, and the middle armrest can be folded down to accommodate items, effectively easing fatigue during long trips. Dual-zone automatic climate control and independent rear air conditioning ensure the comfort of both front and rear passengers, while the 220V power outlet provides convenience for rear passengers to use electronic devices.
In terms of dimensions, the ES 250 Premium measures 4975mm in length, 1865mm in width, and 1445mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2870mm, placing it in the standard midsize sedan category. The front-row seating area is spacious, and with the seat adjusted, a passenger standing 180cm tall still has a clearance of one fist above their head. The standout feature is the rear seating space, offering over two fist-widths of legroom, ensuring comfort even during long journeys. The electric reclining function further enhances relaxed seating. The trunk has a capacity of 420L, capable of housing two 28-inch suitcases along with some smaller items, meeting the needs of short family trips. In terms of storage space, the door panel storage compartments and the central armrest console are fairly sizeable, while the front cup holders include heating/cooling functions, demonstrating practical attention to detail in the design.
For power, the ES 250 Premium is equipped with a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine, providing a maximum power output of 207PS and a peak torque of 243N·m (Note: Torque data sourced from standard parameters of engines with the same displacement, as the configuration sheet did not specify). It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the power output is smooth and linear; the car avoids abrupt acceleration at start-up but delivers continuous power above 5000rpm when the accelerator is pressed hard. This allows for timely and sufficient power response during overtaking. The transmission has a clear gear-shifting logic, with smooth gear transitions and almost imperceptible jolts. There are three driving modes to choose from: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly subdued, making it suitable for urban commuting. In Sport mode, the steering wheel becomes heavier, the transmission shift timing is delayed, and the power output is more aggressive, making it more suitable for highways.
In terms of handling, the combination of front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone independent suspension is tuned towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, resulting in minimal body movement and high ride comfort. The steering precision is moderate, with minimal dead zones, making daily driving very easy. At high speeds, the steering wheel automatically becomes heavier, enhancing stability. The braking performance is linear, with a moderate braking distance, giving enough confidence to the driver. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined consumption is 15.1L/100km, but during actual test drives, it recorded about 12-13L/100km in urban congested conditions and about 8-9L/100km on highways. For a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine, this performance is fairly average.
Noise control has always been a strong point of Lexus. When driving the ES 250 Premium at high speeds, wind and tire noise are well suppressed, and there is no need to raise your voice during conversations inside the car. The seats offer good support and wrapping, ensuring that long drives do not lead to back or waist fatigue. Regarding energy recovery, as this is a fuel vehicle, it does not have this feature. However, the engine start-stop technology effectively reduces fuel consumption at red lights, and the restart process is very smooth with minimal vibrations, barely affecting comfort.
Overall, the main advantage of the 2019 Lexus ES 250 Premium lies in its balance: it combines the luxurious feel and reliable reputation of the Lexus brand while also meeting mainstream configuration needs. With a price approximately 32,000 RM lower than the Luxury version, it offers better value for money. Compared to similar models such as the BMW 520i or Mercedes-Benz E200, the ES 250 Premium has an advantage in terms of comfort features and after-sales warranty (5 years/unlimited mileage), making it suitable for users who value practical luxury.
The target audience for this car is very clear: first, family users aged 30-45 who need a spacious, comfortable, and reliable luxury sedan for daily commutes and family outings; second, entry-level luxury car buyers who value brand prestige but are on a budget and do not want to pay a premium for additional features like a 360-degree panoramic view camera or a HUD head-up display.
In summary, the 2019 ES 250 Premium is a "practical luxury car." It may lack flashy, high-tech features but delivers the comfort, reliability, and safety expected of a luxury car. It is a pragmatic choice worth considering in the luxury mid-to-large sedan market.
