In Malaysia's C-Segment sedan market, balanced product strength and reasonable pricing have always been core needs for consumers, and the 2022 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 is a popular option in this segment. As the brand's main model, it not only continues Mazda’s design genes but also optimizes configurations and space for family users. This time, we will comprehensively evaluate whether it can meet the dual needs of daily commuting and family travel through a static experience and dynamic test drive, as well as whether its core selling points live up to expectations.

From the exterior, the 2022 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 adopts the iconic "Kodo" design language of the family, with an overall style that is smooth and distinctive. The front features a shield-shaped grille with chrome trim connected to sharp LED headlights on both sides, visually widening the front proportions; the side body lines extend from the hood to the rear, with clean and neat waistlines, paired with 205/60 R16 tires, ensuring comfort while retaining a sense of sportiness; the LED taillights at the rear echo the headlight design, and the lines of the rear bumper tighten, making the rear look compact and stylish. In terms of lighting systems, both the automatic LED headlights and front and rear fog lights are standard, providing clear illumination during nighttime or rainy weather, offering full practicality.

Inside the car, the interior predominantly uses a dark tone, with the dashboard covered in soft-touch materials, providing a delicate feel. The center console layout leans slightly toward the driver’s side, with an 8.8-inch touchscreen floating at the center, complemented by physical buttons and knobs. The operation logic is clear, and it’s easy to get used to. Configuration highlights include a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and head-up display (HUD) capable of simultaneously showing speed, navigation, and other information to reduce driving distractions. Convenience features like Keyless Operation, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding rearview mirrors are all included; the 8-speaker Sound Plus audio system offers audio quality that ranks in the mid-to-upper range within the same class, meeting the needs for everyday music enjoyment.

In terms of space, the dimensions of 4660/1795/1440mm and a wheelbase of 2725mm place it within the mainstream of the C-Segment. The front row offers ample space, with a 175cm-tall passenger still having a fist of headroom after adjusting the seat; rear legroom is about two fists, and headroom is one fist, which is sufficient for family use. The middle floor hump is not high, so temporarily seating three people in the back won't feel too cramped. In terms of storage capacity, the front row includes cup holders, a center armrest box, and door panel storage pockets. The trunk offers a capacity of 444L, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, allowing expanded storage space to fit strollers or large suitcases with ease. However, a minor shortcoming is that the front air conditioning is manually adjustable rather than automatic, offering slightly less convenience.

As for the powertrain, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 120PS and a peak torque of 153N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, acceleration is smooth from a standstill, and the low-speed torque is sufficient for dealing with city traffic; after accelerating to 80km/h, power output gradually becomes moderate, and overtaking requires a heavier throttle, at which point the transmission downshifts actively to provide some power support. There are two driving modes available: Normal and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle response is quicker, suitable for users who occasionally want a dynamic driving experience. Fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with a combined fuel consumption of about 6.2L per 100km under mixed conditions, close to the official rating of 5.8L. With a fuel tank capacity of 51L, a full tank provides a range of approximately 800km, making it suitable for long-distance travel.

Handling and chassis performance are traditional strengths of Mazda, and this car is no exception. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, the return force is linear, and the driver can feel a clear road feedback when cornering. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned on the firmer side but can filter out most road bumps. When going over speed bumps or rough roads, the body does not wobble significantly, balancing handling and comfort. As for braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes are responsive, the braking force is linear, and the vehicle remains stable during emergency braking, providing a strong sense of safety.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise insulation performs well. At speeds below 80km/h, wind and tire noise are kept within an acceptable range, though tire noise becomes slightly noticeable at higher speeds, it does not affect normal conversations. The seats are manually adjustable with moderate firmness in padding, offering enough support and ensuring long drives are not tiring. The start-stop technology of the engine operates with minimal vibration, which does not affect the riding experience.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2022 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 lies in its balance—it features timeless design, practical configurations, sufficient space, and solid handling. With features like 7 airbags, HUD, and keyless entry, it offers better value compared to its competitors in the same segment (such as the Toyota Corolla 1.8E or the lower trims of the Honda Civic 1.5T). It is suitable for families who value balanced performance, especially for those needing a vehicle for daily commuting and weekend family trips. It is also a good choice for young people who prioritize driving quality without blindly pursuing high horsepower.

In summary, the 2022 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 doesn’t have any obvious shortcomings. It is a well-rounded C-segment sedan that "can do everything and does everything well." If you are looking for a reliable, easy-to-drive, and adequately equipped family car, it’s worth considering for your shortlist.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we left the city, we encountered heavy rain. The automatic sensing wipers worked steadily, the LED headlights had enough penetration, and the 205 tires handled the slippery mountain roads well. However, with the 1.5NA engine, overtaking trucks uphill required giving extra throttle in advance. On the way back from the orchard's muddy road, the body got splashed with mud spots, but after washing, the Soul Red paint still shone bright, though the wheel arches tended to trap mud. The kid in the back seat lay comfortably in the child safety seat, with the ISOFIX latch holding tightly. My wife folded down the 60:40 split seats to fit two big bags of fruits. The 8.8-inch screen with CarPlay played children's songs smoothly without lag, and the 8-speaker sound quality was better than expected. The only downside: the manual air conditioning requires turning knobs to adjust the temperature, which isn't as convenient as automatic air conditioning. The fuel consumption was 6.2 on the highway and mountain roads combined, slightly higher than the official 5.8, but still acceptable.

This central control screen is not even touch-enabled! Every time I need to adjust the air conditioning, I have to look down and turn the knob. I'm really afraid of getting distracted when driving fast…

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing Rawang, we encountered a heavy downpour. The rain-sensing wipers were frantically sweeping, and the LED headlights pierced through the rain, steadily illuminating the road ahead. While climbing, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine wasn't as aggressive as a turbocharged one, but the AT gearbox shifted smoothly. With continuous power delivery upon acceleration, it didn't feel strained even with 5 passengers fully loaded. On the return trip, the kids in the back seat fell asleep. Suddenly, the car ahead braked sharply. I slammed the brakes, and the Vehicle Stability Control system immediately kicked in, bringing the car to a stable stop — the 7 airbags and these safety features are definitely not just for show. With a fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km, the fuel tank was still more than half full after completing the trip, offering peace of mind.

7 airbags + vehicle stability control, driving in Kuala Lumpur's rainy morning rush hour gives great confidence in braking, much more stable than the Vios. Its Kodo design looks really good; every time I park in front of Jaya Grocer, people always take a glance. However, with the 1.5 NA engine on the North-South Expressway, it requires a deep press on the accelerator to get power, and overtaking requires early judgment. On weekends, when taking the family to the foot of Genting Highlands, the rear-row space is sufficient, but the air-conditioning is manual and inconvenient to adjust. The HUD is super convenient for checking speed on the highway, no need to look down. Overall, spending RM149k for a safe, easy-to-drive, and beautiful-looking C-segment car is suitable for both commuting and family use in Malaysia. The small drawbacks are completely acceptable.

Driving the Mazda 3 for daily commuting is awesome! The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine provides enough power for overtaking in the city, and the start-stop system saves a lot of fuel in traffic jams. The rear seats aren’t cramped even with three friends, and the trunk can fit two carry-ons plus a backpack. The only downside is the manual air conditioning where you have to turn the knob to adjust the temperature; it would be perfect if it were automatic!
