Specs

The compact sedan market has always been a competitive segment among Malaysian families and young consumers. People value not only refined design but also have clear requirements for configuration and practicality. As the top-spec version of the lineup, the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High Plus is packed with rare features within its price range, such as a 10-way power memory seat and automatic parking. Many people are curious whether it’s simply a "feature-packed king" or genuinely strives for balance. This time, through dynamic test drives and static evaluations, we focus on verifying whether its actual performance lives up to its top-spec identity.

At first glance, it's easy to see that the "Kodo" design of the Mazda 3 Sedan remains stunning in the 2023 model. The large shield-shaped front grille, paired with blackened trims and sharp LED headlights, gives it high recognition; the side of the car features sleek lines running continuously from the hood to the rear, complemented by 18-inch multi-spoke wheels (more sporty than the 16-inch wheels of the mid-level High variant), creating a low-and-long stance. The rear design is compact, with LED taillights echoing the front, a slightly upturned ducktail spoiler adding a sporty touch, and chrome trims on the rear bumper enhancing the sense of refinement. The lighting system is fully LED-equipped, including automatic headlights and front fog lights, which are very convenient for daily use.

Once inside, the interior texture is the first pleasant surprise. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with silver trims and piano black panels, presenting a clean and upscale style. Although the 8.8-inch central control touchscreen is not the largest, it has clear display and intuitive operation. The combination of the HUD head-up display and 7-inch full digital instrument cluster can display information such as vehicle speed and navigation in real-time, reducing the need to shift your line of sight while driving. In terms of configuration, the highlight of the High Plus version is the 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, making it easier to find a comfortable seating position for long drives. Comparatively, the High variant only offers manual adjustment for the driver’s seat. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear air vents, 220V power outlet, and keyless entry/start are all standard equipment, maximizing daily convenience.

Regarding space performance, the car measures 4660mm in length, 1795mm in width, and 1440mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2725mm, which is considered standard in the compact sedan segment. The front-row headroom leaves about a fist's width of space for passengers up to 175cm tall, with ample legroom. The rear-row legroom provides about two fists’ width, and headroom offers about a fist’s width, which is sufficient for daily family use. The floor in the middle is not very raised, making it less uncomfortable for a third passenger to ride there temporarily. The trunk has a capacity of 444L, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, which makes it easy to fit a baby stroller or luggage, meeting practicality demands.

In terms of dynamic driving performance, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 162PS and a peak torque of 213N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power output is smooth during startup, with responsive performance at low rev ranges, which is more than enough for daily city commutes. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the transmission has clear shifting logic and quick downshifting, providing good confidence for overtaking. There are both Normal and Sport driving modes available. In Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the steering wheel gains weight, suitable for those occasional moments when you want to "let loose." The chassis features a front MacPherson independent suspension, tuned for comfort without compromising resilience. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most of the vibrations, ensuring rear passengers don’t feel too bumpy. In corners, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering is precise, making overall handling stand out in this class.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.2L/100km. From our actual test drive, the urban congested road condition is about 7.5L/100km, and the highway condition is 5.8L/100km. Overall, the performance meets expectations. Safety configurations are the strengths of the High Plus version, with 7 safety airbags, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, active emergency braking, and other active safety systems as standard. The automatic parking function is very friendly to new drivers. These configurations are more comprehensive compared to similarly priced Corolla or Civic models.

Noise control is well done. At a speed of 120km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not obvious, and in-car conversations are not affected. The seats are well-bolstered and made of soft materials, ensuring comfort even during long-distance driving. It's worth mentioning that the braking system responds linearly, and the braking distance is short, providing sufficient safety assurance.

To summarize, the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High Plus has very obvious core strengths: Firstly, compared to the mid-range High version (with a price difference of RM 10,000), it adds front radar, automatic parking, 18-inch wheels, and electrically adjustable driver seat with memory, offering excellent value for money. Secondly, its interior quality and driving experience rank in the top tier of the same class, with full safety configurations. Thirdly, its sophisticated design caters to the aesthetic preferences of young consumers. Compared to similarly priced Honda Civic 1.5T lower power version or Toyota Corolla 2.0L version, Mazda 3 offers richer configurations and better handling performance.

This car is suitable for two types of users: Firstly, families who value configurations and safety, as it caters to daily commuting and weekend outings perfectly. Secondly, young people who pursue sophisticated design and driving quality and occasionally want to experience sporty driving. If your budget is around RM 160,000 and you're looking for a balanced and refined compact sedan, the Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High Plus is worth considering as a priority.

Smooth power, 2.0L naturally aspirated engine + 6AT combination provides silky tracking and effortless highway overtaking

Super convenient stop-and-go during rush hour, 7 airbags provide a full sense of security! Three friends sitting in the back won’t feel cramped, and the hatchback fits camping gear perfectly. It's just that the manual seat adjustment is a bit of a hassle, but the looks and handling make up for it completely~

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to explore the foot of Yunding Mountain. Just as we started up the mountain road, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The 2.0 NA engine was a bit sluggish at the start, but once the torque kicked in at 4000 rpm, accelerating out of turns felt responsive. The 18-inch tires had enough grip and didn’t skid. The HUD displayed both speed and navigation, so there was no need to look down at the screen, and with lane-keeping assist and automatic braking, driving in the rain felt reassuring. The interior features a genuine leather steering wheel and a 10-way electric seat; my wife, sitting in the passenger seat, said it’s even more comfortable than the sofa at home. The rear space is enough for the kid to mess around, and the trunk can fit two suitcases plus a stroller without any issue. The fuel consumption is over 7L in heavy city traffic and over 5L on the highway, which is slightly higher than the official figure of 6.2L, but still acceptable.

As the owner of the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High, after using it for half a year in Malaysia, I genuinely feel that the money was well spent! The previous Japanese car I drove was utterly underpowered, but after switching to the Mazda 3, the combination of the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine and the 6AT gearbox is super smooth in the Kuala Lumpur morning rush hour traffic. The acceleration is very responsive and provides as much power as you need, and overtaking on the highway is effortless. I’d give the performance a 5/5 without a doubt. The safety features, with 7 airbags and a full suite of electronic stability systems, provide a great sense of security, but it lacks an active braking system. On the LDP highway, sudden lane cutting scenarios still rely on your quick reaction, so I’d deduct 1 point for that. A minor downside is that the rear space feels a bit cramped for friends who are 180cm tall, but it doesn’t matter much since I usually drive alone. On weekends when I head to Genting Highlands, the hill start assist and precise steering make cornering remarkably stable. Fuel efficiency stands at 6.2L for city driving, which is considered economical. Overall, I’m very satisfied!

Previously, I was driving an old Vios. Switching to the Mazda 3 High Plus is truly a huge upgrade! The exterior with its KODO design has an incredibly high head-turning rate on the streets of KL. I'm giving it 4 stars because I feel the rear spoiler could be sportier to make it perfect. The interior gets 5 stars without a doubt—Nappa leather seats + HUD head-up display, the quality feels even finer compared to the Civic I’ve seen. During the morning rush hour on LDP highway, the 2.0 NA engine + 6AT is very smooth, and the automatic emergency braking helped me avoid a car cutting into my lane once, fully maximizing safety features. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the hill assist + sufficient power worked well, but the middle seat in the rear row gets a bit cramped after sitting for a long time. Fuel consumption of 6.2L/100km is quite economical for city driving. The only minor gripe is the slow response of the touchscreen. All in all, spending over RM 160K on this car is well worth it!
