Mazda 3 Sedan 2023 Review

The compact sedan market has always been a competitive segment among Malaysian families and young consumers. People value not only refined design but also have clear requirements for configuration and practicality. As the top-spec version of the lineup, the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High Plus is packed with rare features within its price range, such as a 10-way power memory seat and automatic parking. Many people are curious whether it’s simply a "feature-packed king" or genuinely strives for balance. This time, through dynamic test drives and static evaluations, we focus on verifying whether its actual performance lives up to its top-spec identity.
At first glance, it's easy to see that the "Kodo" design of the Mazda 3 Sedan remains stunning in the 2023 model. The large shield-shaped front grille, paired with blackened trims and sharp LED headlights, gives it high recognition; the side of the car features sleek lines running continuously from the hood to the rear, complemented by 18-inch multi-spoke wheels (more sporty than the 16-inch wheels of the mid-level High variant), creating a low-and-long stance. The rear design is compact, with LED taillights echoing the front, a slightly upturned ducktail spoiler adding a sporty touch, and chrome trims on the rear bumper enhancing the sense of refinement. The lighting system is fully LED-equipped, including automatic headlights and front fog lights, which are very convenient for daily use.
Once inside, the interior texture is the first pleasant surprise. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with silver trims and piano black panels, presenting a clean and upscale style. Although the 8.8-inch central control touchscreen is not the largest, it has clear display and intuitive operation. The combination of the HUD head-up display and 7-inch full digital instrument cluster can display information such as vehicle speed and navigation in real-time, reducing the need to shift your line of sight while driving. In terms of configuration, the highlight of the High Plus version is the 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, making it easier to find a comfortable seating position for long drives. Comparatively, the High variant only offers manual adjustment for the driver’s seat. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear air vents, 220V power outlet, and keyless entry/start are all standard equipment, maximizing daily convenience.
Regarding space performance, the car measures 4660mm in length, 1795mm in width, and 1440mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2725mm, which is considered standard in the compact sedan segment. The front-row headroom leaves about a fist's width of space for passengers up to 175cm tall, with ample legroom. The rear-row legroom provides about two fists’ width, and headroom offers about a fist’s width, which is sufficient for daily family use. The floor in the middle is not very raised, making it less uncomfortable for a third passenger to ride there temporarily. The trunk has a capacity of 444L, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, which makes it easy to fit a baby stroller or luggage, meeting practicality demands.
In terms of dynamic driving performance, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 162PS and a peak torque of 213N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power output is smooth during startup, with responsive performance at low rev ranges, which is more than enough for daily city commutes. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the transmission has clear shifting logic and quick downshifting, providing good confidence for overtaking. There are both Normal and Sport driving modes available. In Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the steering wheel gains weight, suitable for those occasional moments when you want to "let loose." The chassis features a front MacPherson independent suspension, tuned for comfort without compromising resilience. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most of the vibrations, ensuring rear passengers don’t feel too bumpy. In corners, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering is precise, making overall handling stand out in this class.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.2L/100km. From our actual test drive, the urban congested road condition is about 7.5L/100km, and the highway condition is 5.8L/100km. Overall, the performance meets expectations. Safety configurations are the strengths of the High Plus version, with 7 safety airbags, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, active emergency braking, and other active safety systems as standard. The automatic parking function is very friendly to new drivers. These configurations are more comprehensive compared to similarly priced Corolla or Civic models.
Noise control is well done. At a speed of 120km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not obvious, and in-car conversations are not affected. The seats are well-bolstered and made of soft materials, ensuring comfort even during long-distance driving. It's worth mentioning that the braking system responds linearly, and the braking distance is short, providing sufficient safety assurance.
To summarize, the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High Plus has very obvious core strengths: Firstly, compared to the mid-range High version (with a price difference of RM 10,000), it adds front radar, automatic parking, 18-inch wheels, and electrically adjustable driver seat with memory, offering excellent value for money. Secondly, its interior quality and driving experience rank in the top tier of the same class, with full safety configurations. Thirdly, its sophisticated design caters to the aesthetic preferences of young consumers. Compared to similarly priced Honda Civic 1.5T lower power version or Toyota Corolla 2.0L version, Mazda 3 offers richer configurations and better handling performance.
This car is suitable for two types of users: Firstly, families who value configurations and safety, as it caters to daily commuting and weekend outings perfectly. Secondly, young people who pursue sophisticated design and driving quality and occasionally want to experience sporty driving. If your budget is around RM 160,000 and you're looking for a balanced and refined compact sedan, the Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High Plus is worth considering as a priority.
