The compact car market in Malaysia has always been a battleground for family users and young professionals. Consumers value fuel efficiency for daily commuting, while also having increasing demands for design quality and rich features. As a mid-to-high specification version of the series, the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High highlights key selling points such as the distinctiveness of its KODO design, 7 airbags for safety, and advanced features like the head-up display (HUD). This time, through a static experience and dynamic test drive, we aim to assess whether this vehicle can stand out in the highly competitive segment.

At first glance, the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High continues to showcase the flowing lines of its KODO design as its main highlight. The front features the signature family-style shield grille, complemented by chrome accents and sharp LED headlights on both sides, resulting in a sporty yet refined overall appearance. A character line runs from the front fender to the rear along the side of the body, harmonizing with the sloping roofline, making the 4660mm length appear more elongated. The rear LED taillights adopt a horizontal design, echoing the front headlights, while the chrome trim under the rear bumper enhances the visual sophistication. The entire exterior stands out with high recognition among cars in its class, without giving off a "homogenized" feeling.

Inside the cabin, the interior layout leans toward the driver’s side. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with metal-finished accents, delivering a quality that meets the expectations for this price range. The combination of the 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 8.8-inch central touchscreen displays information clearly. The head-up display (HUD) is a significant highlight, providing real-time information like speed and navigation while reducing eye movement during driving. The front row features dual-zone automatic climate control, and the rear row has its own air vents, ensuring passenger comfort in the back. While the seats are manually adjustable, their support and enveloping feel are quite good, ensuring comfortable sitting over long periods. The rear seats support a 60:40 split folding, which allows for expanded trunk space. This makes it easy to fit items like strollers or suitcases for daily needs.

In terms of performance, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 162PS, with peak torque achieved at 4000rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power response during acceleration is smooth, without the abruptness seen in turbocharged cars, making it sufficient for daily urban commutes. When pressing the throttle firmly for acceleration, the transmission shifts gears logically, and with the paddle shifters, it can quickly downshift for additional power during overtaking. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.2L/100km. Based on the actual test drive, it reached approximately 7.5L in congested urban conditions and dropped to around 5.8L on highways. The fuel economy meets expectations.

Handling and chassis performance are among the advantages of the Mazda 3. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned to be firm yet resilient. During cornering, the vehicle maintains good roll control, giving drivers ample confidence. When going over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension can quickly absorb most of the vibrations, avoiding pronounced aftershocks. The steering wheel offers precise control with minimal play, making it effortless to handle. In terms of noise reduction, tire and wind noise are noticeable during high-speed driving but remain within acceptable limits and do not interfere with in-car conversations.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High lie in its well-balanced product strengths: the KODO design gives it a distinctive appearance, rich configurations like the HUD head-up display and 8-speaker audio system, and 7 airbags for outstanding safety features in its class. Its power and handling are sufficient to meet daily needs. Compared with competitors such as the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, it has an edge in design quality and handling. Although the manual seat adjustment is somewhat regrettable, its overall cost-effectiveness is quite good. This car is suitable for families who prioritize design, safety, and handling, as well as for young professionals who value a sense of quality. If you need a compact sedan that provides comfortable daily commuting and occasional driving enjoyment, the Mazda 3 Sedan 2.0 High is worth considering.

Last Saturday, I drove my parents to a fruit orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands to pick durians. Just past Rawang, we encountered a heavy downpour. With the automatic LED headlights on, the rain-sensing wipers worked steadily, and the body stability control kept the car steady during turns. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine was powerful enough for climbing, but the push-back feeling during sudden acceleration was slightly lacking. Parking in the muddy orchard ground, the reverse camera helped me avoid potholes. My parents praised the sleek lines of the car, and the durians fit perfectly in the trunk. The 7 airbags and hill-assist feature gave me peace of mind, but manually adjusting the seat was a bit tedious. Overall, I’d give it full marks for safety, and 4 stars for performance and design.

Previously, I drove the older model Vios. Upgrading to the Mazda 3 High variant really feels like moving into a “cozy and refined nest” — everywhere you touch in the interior is soft leather, the HUD and 8.8-inch screen are packed with a sense of technology, and the dual-zone air conditioning is a godsend during the 35°C heat in Kuala Lumpur. In the morning Jalan Ampang traffic jams, the auto start-stop + smooth AT gearbox kept my foot from getting sore. On weekends when taking my family to the base of Genting Highlands, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine has strong power for uphill climbs, and the 7 airbags + stability control make cornering reassuring. The only minor drawbacks: adjusting the manual seats is a bit of a hassle, and the rear middle floor is slightly raised. But at this price point, with Keyless entry, a sunroof, and 8 speakers, what more could you ask for? I’d give its safety 4 out of 5 stars (deducting 1 star to keep it humble), and the interior gets a full score!

Previously, I was driving the old Vios model. Comparing it to the Mazda 3 2.0 High is simply a quantum leap! Safety gets a full 5-star rating, with 7 airbags and vehicle stability. The last time I braked suddenly in the rain on the North-South Highway, there was no skidding, and it was extremely stable. The exterior with the Kodo design is very eye-catching, but the 16-inch wheels are a bit small and not imposing enough, deducting 1 point. During the morning rush hour following traffic on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine combined with the AT gearbox is smooth, and the HUD display makes checking speed limits super convenient. On weekends, taking my family to Genting Highlands, the hill-start assist prevents rolling back, the rear air conditioning is sufficiently cool, and the ISO FIX child seat provides peace of mind. The only minor downside is the slightly raised floor in the middle of the rear seat, making it a bit cramped for 3 people. Overall, it's worth it—a great choice for family use with a touch of sporty handling!

The interior of the old car I drove before felt too plasticky. After switching to the Mazda 3 2.0 High, the stitching on the dashboard and the HUD head-up display pleasantly surprised me. Giving a 4-star rating for the interior quality feels reasonable. The only minor drawback is the manual adjustment for the front seats, which is a bit effort-intensive. In terms of safety, the 7 airbags are all standard. During morning traffic jams or while using LDP for highway cruising, the vehicle stability control is very steady, and even during sudden braking, it feels reassuring, so it deserves a 4-star rating. On the weekend, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine performed adequately for uphill driving. The rear air conditioning is strong, so it’s not stuffy, and the 444L trunk capacity could fit both the stroller and luggage. However, the 205/60 R16 tires feel a bit bumpy on rough roads, but overall, it's a very suitable car for use in Malaysia, and the price of over 150,000 MYR is worth it!
