In Malaysia's C-segment sedan market, household commuting and daily practicality have always been core needs of consumers. The competition among major brands surrounding space, fuel efficiency, and features remains intense. As the main model of the brand in this segment, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5L continues the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design language while focusing on optimizing fuel economy and driving comfort. This has piqued the curiosity of many users who are following compact sedans about the car's actual performance. This test drive will provide a comprehensive evaluation from static experience to dynamic performance to present its real-world usability in daily scenarios to the readers.

In terms of exterior design, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5L maintains the family-style sporty and refined aesthetic. The front features a large shield-shaped grille with an internal black dotted pattern, paired with sharp LED headlamps on both sides, creating a strong visual impact. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with a waistline that stretches from the front fender to the rear, creating a sloping stance. The 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, though modest in size, harmonize with the body proportions, enhancing overall refinement. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a smoked finish, mirroring the design of the front lights, while the dual exhaust layout strengthens its sporty attributes, making its overall appearance stand out among competitors in the same segment.

Upon entering the cabin, the interior design emphasizes simplicity and practicality. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented with silver trims that provide a quality feel in line with the segment’s expectations. The center console features an 8-inch floating touch screen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, offering a smooth operation experience. Below the screen, some physical buttons are retained for easy blind operation during driving. The seats are covered in fabric material, offering moderate support and comfort. The front seats are manually adjustable, and the rear seats are equipped with a central armrest and cup holders, enhancing practicality. In terms of features, the car comes standard with automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, push-button start, and a rearview camera, which meet daily usage needs.

In terms of space, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5L measures 4662mm×1797mm×1445mm in dimensions and has a wheelbase of 2726mm, placing it at the mainstream level in its class. The front-row seating space is spacious, with a 175cm tall occupant having a one-fist headroom after seat adjustment. In the rear, legroom allows for two fists, and headroom has about four fingers of clearance, meeting the daily needs of family users. Regarding storage capacity, the front center armrest box and door panel storage compartments offer moderate volume, while the trunk has a capacity of 444L. The rear seats support folding down to expand the space, allowing for storage of two 28-inch suitcases along with other miscellaneous items, ensuring strong practicality.

In terms of power, the car is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum power output of 87kW (118PS) and a peak torque of 153N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive layout. During daily driving, the power delivery is smooth and linear, with a responsive initial acceleration that meets the needs of urban commuting. Mid-to-high-range acceleration is average, requiring the gas pedal to be pressed harder to raise the RPMs for overtaking. The transmission boasts clear shift logic and good shift smoothness. In terms of driving modes, it offers two options: Eco and Normal. The Eco mode provides slightly delayed throttle response, making it suitable for congested urban roads, while the Normal mode delivers more direct power output, making it ideal for highway cruising.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel offers precise turning, minimal dead zone, and clear directional control. The driving feel is light, making it suitable for female users and daily commuting. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension combination, tuned towards comfort. It effectively absorbs vibrations when encountering speed bumps and rough city roads, maintaining vehicle stability. During cornering, the suspension provides moderate support, keeping body roll within acceptable limits, balancing both comfort and handling.

In terms of fuel consumption, this test drive primarily covered city roads with the air conditioning continuously turned on and an average speed of approximately 30 km/h. The actual measured fuel consumption was 6.8L/100km, which is close to the official combined fuel consumption of 6.2L/100km, demonstrating good fuel efficiency performance. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal feels linear, the braking response is timely, and during emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable with braking distances within the normal range for its class.

In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle exhibits satisfactory noise control performance. While driving in city traffic, tire and wind noise are well suppressed; at highway speeds, the engine noise becomes slightly more noticeable but does not affect normal conversations. The seat comfort is moderate, making long drives less tiring, and the rear air conditioning vents enhance the comfort of rear passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5L lie in its simple and refined exterior design, practical configurations, and good fuel efficiency. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6L, it offers a sportier design and a similar level of features. Against the Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, its power delivery is slightly weaker, but its fuel efficiency is better. This car is suitable for families who value fuel economy and practical features, as well as young consumers who need a reliable vehicle for commuting.

In summary, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5L is a well-balanced family sedan. While its power performance is not outstanding, it delivers well in terms of design, features, and fuel efficiency, catering to the daily needs of most family users.

Driving through the gaps during the morning rush hour has become much more nimble than before. Starting off at green lights with a push on the gas is smooth, and overtaking is no longer sluggish. With three colleagues in the back seat for an afternoon tea run, no one complains about being cramped. It's just that during summer, when climbing hills with the air conditioning on in the 1.5L, you need to press the gas pedal a bit harder for enough power — a minor regret, but sufficient for daily use.

Last week, I drove my wife and kids to a fruit orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. After just passing the congested area in Kuala Lumpur, we turned onto the mountain road and encountered a rain shower. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with 6AT offered good low-end torque and responded well to acceleration. The car was very stable in corners; my wife was able to put on makeup in the back seat without any bumps. However, the car paint is a bit thin, and a small white spot appeared on the front bumper after being hit by a small stone. But this Soul Red looks truly stunning in the rain and mist. When parked next to the orchard, even local uncles passing by took a second look.

Previously, I drove the old Vios. I switched to the 2025 Mazda 3 1.5L completely because I was struck by the Kodo design! Full marks for safety and interior — the active and passive safety features are fully loaded, and I feel at ease even during the morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur; the Nappa leather and the floating screen in the interior are excellent, much more premium than my colleague’s Corolla. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend. While the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine isn’t as powerful as a turbo, the 6AT is very smooth, and the air conditioning is strong enough (a necessity in Malaysia’s scorching weather). A minor downside is that the rear seat space feels a bit cramped for my 180cm height, but it’s sufficient for daily use with my family of three. The most surprising part is the fuel consumption — it’s only 6.2L/100km in the city, even better than the Vios! Highly recommend it to friends who value aesthetics and quality!

Waited for more than half a year and finally got the car! The 1.5L engine is perfect for city driving, just tap the gas and it goes even during morning rush hour, and it’s not sluggish at all even with the air conditioning on full blast. With three colleagues in the back seat heading to the tea house, their knees don't hit the front seats. The only small regret: the central control screen occasionally reflects light, and you have to squint to adjust it under strong sunlight.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. During the uphill climb after the rain, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine felt a bit "weak," and it only barely kept up with the car ahead when I pressed the accelerator hard — this is why performance gets a 1-point deduction. But the moment I stepped into the interior, I was instantly comforted: the Nappa leather seats hugged my waist, and the central control knob made switching songs super smooth without even looking. While cornering, the i-ACTIVSENSE system suddenly issued a warning. It turned out I hadn't noticed the oncoming car encroaching on our lane, and the automatic braking system helped stop the car just half a meter away. When parked at the entrance of the orchard, tourists passing by kept turning back to admire the Soul Red body — totally worth it.
