The C-segment sedan market in Malaysia has always been a competitive battleground for family users and young commuters in recent years. Consumers value fuel efficiency for daily commuting while having basic demands for safety features and ride quality. The upcoming 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 L, as the brand's entry-level C-segment car, focuses on the core selling point of "balanced practicality" – continuing Mazda's signature design aesthetics while offering a combination of a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a 6AT transmission to balance fuel economy and driving smoothness. The core objective of this early test drive is to verify if this small-displacement model can meet the daily needs of local users under the premise of adequate power and uncompromised features.

From the exterior, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 L continues the family-style "Kodo" design language, characterized by streamlined and low-slung lines, showcasing an unusual sporty feel for a C-segment vehicle. At the front, the large-sized shield-shaped grille combined with a blacked-out honeycomb pattern, outlined by chrome accents, delivers high recognition. The sharp-shaped LED headlights on both sides integrate daytime running lights, creating a clear visual effect when lit. On the side, the beltline stretches from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, achieving harmonious proportions without looking cheap for an entry-level model. The rear design is relatively simple, with horizontally arranged LED tail lights echoing the headlights. The hidden exhaust layout beneath the rear bumper fits the positioning of a family car.

Entering the cabin, the overall style of the interior is inclined toward simplicity and practicality, with a clear layout in the central control area that is easy to get familiar with. Regarding materials, the upper part of the dashboard is covered in soft-touch materials accented with silver trims, offering both pleasant tactile and visual effects. The steering wheel is multifunctional in design, with media and Bluetooth telephone controls on the left and driving assistance system adjustments on the right. It has a solid grip and is easy to operate. The instrument cluster features a 7-inch digital display screen, which clearly shows information such as RPM, speed, and fuel consumption. The center console screen is 8.8 inches in size, supports touch operations, has a smooth system interface, and is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity functions, ensuring sufficient convenience for daily use. The seats are wrapped in fabric material, with manual adjustment available for the front seats. They offer moderate lateral support and ensure no significant fatigue during extended periods of sitting. The rear seats are soft and offer good padding, with legroom benefiting from the 2725mm wheelbase. Passengers with a height of 175cm would have about two fists of legroom to the front seats and one fist of headroom, fulfilling the needs of family outings without any issues. Regarding storage space, the door panel pockets can hold two bottles of mineral water, and the center armrest box has a moderate depth for small items. The trunk has a capacity of 444L with a flat opening, and folding the rear seats can further expand the cargo area, accommodating large luggage pieces without any trouble.

In terms of power, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 L is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, offering a maximum output of 87kW (118PS) and a peak torque of 153N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the power output at the start is relatively smooth. When the accelerator is pressed, the transmission shifts gears seamlessly, with almost no noticeable jolts. At low to medium speeds, the power response is prompt, making it easy to keep up with traffic or overtake in urban roads. However, at high speeds (e.g., above 100km/h), the power reserve becomes slightly insufficient, and a harder press on the accelerator is required to achieve noticeable acceleration. Two driving modes are available: Economy and Normal. In Economy mode, the throttle response is milder, making it suitable for everyday commuting. Normal mode is more responsive, capable of handling most road conditions.

The handling and chassis performance are one of Mazda's strengths, and this car is no exception. The steering wheel is precise with minimal slack, offering moderate resistance when turned. It feels light at low speeds and steady at high speeds, giving the driver a great degree of confidence. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs most bumps when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, avoiding harsh impacts. When cornering, the suspension provides decent support, keeping body roll within a reasonable range without causing a wobbly sensation due to the relatively high body. The braking system performs steadily, with the brake pedal offering a moderate travel distance. Once pressed, the braking force is released linearly, making it easy to control braking distance during daily driving.

In terms of fuel consumption, this test drive was mainly conducted on urban roads, with occasional highway driving. The combined fuel consumption was approximately 6.0L/100km, which is not far from the official figure of 5.8L/100km. The fuel economy meets expectations. Regarding noise control, at low speeds, engine noise and tire noise are relatively minor; at high speeds, wind noise slightly increases but does not hinder normal conversation among passengers. The seats are quite comfortable, and the breathable fabric material prevents stuffiness during long periods of sitting.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 L lies in its balance—its design maintains the brand's sporty feel, the interior is practical and well-equipped, the power delivery is smooth with low fuel consumption, and the handling and chassis quality are among the top in its class. Compared to similarly classed models such as the Toyota Corolla 1.5L or the Honda Civic 1.5L (non-turbo version), it stands out with a better driving quality and uncompromised safety features (standard 7 airbags, electronic stability control, etc.). This car is suitable for families focusing on daily fuel-efficient commutes and appreciating driving quality or young commuters on a budget looking for a compact sedan from a joint-venture brand.

In summary, the 2025 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 L is a "well-rounded" family car. It doesn't force you to compromise any specific need for a particular strength, making it a great choice as the main vehicle for daily commutes and family trips.

I've been driving the Mazda 3 2.0 premium for nearly four years and have thoughts to share! Start-stop system + automatic air conditioning makes commuting in traffic super convenient, the back row doesn't feel cramped when taking my family out on weekends, and the trunk can fit three carry-on suitcases plus some miscellaneous items. Just press the gas and it accelerates for overtaking, and on rainy days, the automatic wipers + LED lights feel very reliable. The only minor shortcoming is that the tire noise is a bit noticeable at high speeds.~

The looks are truly stunning! But with the 1.5L engine climbing slopes, when stepping on the accelerator, it feels like the car is "slowly negotiating" with me...

Previously, when driving the old model Vios, overtaking trucks on the highway always felt a bit "powerless". After switching to the 2017 Mazda3 Sedan, I finally feel at ease—the i-ACTIVSENSE safety system helped me avoid a car cutting in during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, giving me full peace of mind, 5 out of 5! The Soul Red Crystal paint turned heads on Penang's coastal roads, but I only found out during a touch-up that it costs twice as much as ordinary colors, so minus 1 point for that. On weekends, I take my family to Genting Highlands, and although the 1.5L engine isn't exactly powerful on climbs, the 6AT gearbox shifts smoothly enough that my kids in the back didn’t complain of car sickness. A minor gripe is the reflection on the central touch screen; adjusting the air conditioner under bright sunlight requires squinting. However, these are minor flaws; this car is practical enough for both commuting and mountain drives in Malaysia.

Previously, I drove the older Vios model, and switching to the Mazda3 High Plus is truly a premium experience! The KODO design turns heads on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, though the 18-inch wheels feel a bit bumpy when driving over Jalan Ampang's potholes. During the morning rush hour, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission is impeccably smooth, and the Head-Up Display (HUD) saves me from having to look down at the navigation. The active braking system even helped me avoid a sudden lane cut-in incident. Over the weekend, I took my family to Genting Highlands; the car's power was sufficient for hill climbs, and the rear space is just right for my height of 175cm. However, the trunk feels a bit cramped after fitting three carry-on suitcases. The fuel efficiency is about 7.5L/100km in the city and 5.8L/100km on the highway, slightly higher than the official figures but still acceptable. Overall, I am very satisfied. The price is on the higher side compared to its class, but the quality and safety features make it worth every penny!

The interior of this old Mazda3 feels extremely plasticky, everything you touch is hard, and in summer, after being exposed to the sun, it's scorching hot to sit in!
