In 2022, the competition in Malaysia's D-segment SUV market has become increasingly intense, and consumers' demand for a balance of spaciousness, performance, and configuration has become clearer—seeking practicality for daily family travel while retaining a certain level of driving quality. As a representative Japanese model in this segment, the Mazda CX-8 2.5L Turbo AWD High Plus has drawn the attention of quality-conscious users since its launch with turbocharged power, seven-seat configuration, and Mazda's iconic "Kodo" design philosophy. This review will comprehensively analyze the static design, practicality of space, and dynamic driving performance to see if this RM 224,360 top-spec model can stand out among its competition at the same price range.

From a distance, the CX-8's silhouette maintains the smoothness of Mazda's "Kodo 2.0" design philosophy, without the bulkiness typically associated with traditional seven-seater SUVs. The front end features a large shield-shaped grille, with chrome trims seamlessly connecting to the LED headlights. The "Double L" daytime running lights inside the headlights exhibit high recognition when lit, making the car easily recognizable even in traffic. The side profile showcases lines that extend from the fender to the rear, with a slightly upward waistline paired with 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, giving it a look that is both sleek and stable. At the rear, the LED taillights also feature the "Double L" design, creating a sense of harmony with the front; the rear bumper incorporates chrome trim and a dual exhaust layout, subtly exuding a sporty vibe. The overall exterior design meets family users' need for stability while retaining Mazda's consistent design language.

Inside, the interior materials of the CX-8 leave a good first impression: the upper part of the dashboard is covered in soft-touch materials, the inner side of the door panels where elbows rest is wrapped in leather, and matte wood grain trim adds a sense of quality that is above average for its class. The center console is driver-oriented, with an 8-inch floating touchscreen tilted 15 degrees toward the driver's seat, reducing the need to significantly divert attention when operating it. Below the screen, physical buttons and dials for air conditioning are retained for easier blind operation. In terms of features, the top-spec model comes with leather seats as standard, front seats with electric adjustment and heating functions, and a memory mode for the driver's seat. Rear-seat features include an independent air conditioning control panel, USB charging ports, and a panoramic sunroof. The second-row seats can slide forward and backward, and the backrest angle is adjustable, making it easier for third-row passengers to get in and out. Notably, its smart connectivity system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and navigation and music functions run smoothly after connecting a smartphone.

The CX-8's dimensions are 4955mm×1842mm×1733mm, with a wheelbase of 2930mm, which falls within the mainstream range for seven-seater SUVs. Regarding seat comfort, an adult standing 175cm tall has about one fist and two fingers' worth of headroom in the front seats; when the second-row seats are slid to the frontmost position, legroom is more than two fists, and when slid to the rearmost position, legroom extends to three fists, ensuring a comfortable ride for long distances. The third-row space is relatively compact—when an individual of the same height sits in the back, their legs are almost entirely touching the backrest of the second-row seat, with only about one fist of headroom available, making it more suitable for children or adults during short trips. In terms of storage space, the trunk has a standard capacity of 209L, which can be expanded to 725L by folding the third-row seats, and up to 1641L by folding the second-row seats. This configuration allows for storage of large items like strollers or suitcases without issue. Additionally, the center front armrest, door pockets, and rear cup holders provide practical solutions for storing small daily items.

In terms of power, the CX-8 is equipped with a 2.5L turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 228PS and a peak torque of 420N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the i-ACTIV AWD intelligent all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the power response in the starting phase is not particularly aggressive, but once the turbo kicks in (around 2000 rpm), the power output is significantly enhanced. When accelerating or overtaking in the mid-to-high range, pressing the accelerator deeply provides sustained thrust. Even when fully loaded with seven people on the highway, it doesn't feel "underpowered." Driving modes are divided into Normal, Sport, and Eco. In Sport mode, the transmission shifts are delayed, and the throttle sensitivity is increased, suitable for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration; Eco mode focuses more on fuel efficiency, with relatively smoother power output. The transmission performs smoothly, with clear shift logic, and instances of jerking are rare.

The CX-8's handling and chassis performance are among its highlights. The steering wheel has a moderate weight with minimal slack and linear self-centering force. During high-speed driving, the steering wheel becomes heavier, ensuring good stability. The chassis consists of front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort while retaining a certain level of support: when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most minor vibrations, and the body avoids excessive bouncing; when cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, ensuring passengers don't experience significant swaying. As a seven-seater SUV, its all-wheel-drive system improves traction on rainy or slippery roads, making daily driving safer. However, given its positioning as a city SUV, its off-road capabilities in extreme conditions are not its strong suit.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.9L/100km. In actual tests, the fuel consumption in city traffic is about 9.5L/100km, while on highways, it drops to around 7L, overall meeting the expectations for a 2.5T seven-seater SUV. Noise insulation is well-done: below 60km/h, neither tire noise nor wind noise is noticeable; at highway speeds of up to 120km/h, some wind noise can be heard from the A-pillars, but it does not affect conversations inside the car. The seat comfort is also commendable. The genuine leather seats are soft yet supportive, ensuring that the lower back does not feel sore during long drives. Although the third-row seats have limited space, they are comfortable enough for short trips.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2022 Mazda CX-8 2.5L Turbo AWD High Plus are clear: a streamlined exterior design, a decent-quality interior, adequate seven-seat space, and smooth yet powerful performance. Compared to its same-level competitors, its power figures are more impressive than the 2.0T Toyota Highlander, its interior quality surpasses that of the Honda Avancier (five-seater), and its configurations are also competitive. Priced at RM 224,360, it falls within a reasonable range in the D-segment seven-seater SUV market. However, its third-row seating is only suitable for short trips, which is a common issue among seven-seater SUVs. Consumers with extremely high space requirements may need to consider this point carefully.

This car is best suited for users who value both family practicality and driving quality—for example, families with two children who mainly use the second row and occasionally require the third row to accommodate elderly passengers, or consumers who appreciate Mazda’s design and do not prioritize maximum space. If you are looking for a seven-seater SUV that balances family use and driving experience, the CX-8 2.5L Turbo AWD High Plus is worth considering.

The previously owned Japanese SUV had such weak power it was like a snail, but switching to the CX-8 Turbo was like discovering a whole new world! During the early morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, lightly stepping on the accelerator allows me to instantly overtake slow-moving Myvi cars. The 2.5T power is truly impressive, without any exaggeration, and performance deserves a full 5 stars. Over the weekend, I took the whole family to Genting, and the AWD handled it incredibly steadily, climbing hills effortlessly. The third row accommodates two children without feeling cramped. However, the exterior design is quite standard—just average and not flashy in style, so I can only give it 4 stars at most. A small drawback is that the central control screen occasionally lags slightly, especially when you're in a hurry to change songs, which can be a bit frustrating, but overall it doesn't detract much. With a fuel consumption rate of 7.9L, it's considered economical in Malaysia. At a price of over RM220,000, its value for money in the D-Segment is truly excellent!

Last week, I took the kids to Genting Highlands, and as soon as we hit the mountain road, we encountered heavy rain. The AWD grip of the CX-8 is indeed stable, but when the 2.5T turbo steps in, the body has a slight sway. Giving 4 stars for safety features is not unjustified. The leather interior feels premium, but the third row gets cramped after a while, making your legs feel restricted. I can only say that 4 stars mean "adequate but not perfect." The exterior has a high head-turn rate, but the rims are prone to get muddy and take half an hour to clean. Spending 220,000 MYR on a "semi-sweet" car probably leaves you with this kind of mixed feeling.

The turbo is really powerful! On rainy days, when climbing uphill, it accelerates with just a little gas—way better than my previous car!

22 CX-8 Turbo AWD, got it for over 220,000. The turbo kicks in quickly for overtaking in traffic, no hesitation, and the rear row fits three adults comfortably. The fuel consumption is over 1 unit higher than the displayed value, but it's stable to drive. Worth it.

Previously I drove the older model of the CR-V, and I switched to the CX-8 Turbo High Plus primarily for its power and space. During Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Ampang traffic jam in the early morning rush hour, the 2.5T turbo engages smoothly — just a gentle press on the accelerator is enough to keep up with the car ahead, unlike the old CR-V which required heavy pressing to move. On weekends, I took the whole family to Genting Highlands — the AWD traction was very solid during uphill drives, and even with 7 passengers on board, the car didn’t feel underpowered. The safety features are comprehensive; the autonomous emergency braking once saved me during a close-following situation on the LDP highway. Fuel consumption in the city is around 10L/100km, which is higher than the official 7.9L/100km, but still acceptable. A minor drawback is the third-row space — a person of 170cm height would feel leg fatigue after sitting for a long time, but it’s fine for short distances. At a price of over RM220,000, it’s worth it among the D-segment vehicles.
