Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 2024 Review

The D-segment luxury SUV market has been heating up in Malaysia in recent years. Consumers are looking for the refinement brought by brand sophistication as well as practicality for everyday use—after all, no one wants to spend a lot of money on a car that's "all show and no substance." The 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC43 4Matic+ arrives right at this juncture, carrying the performance genes of the AMG family while retaining the practicality of the GLC series. With a combined power output of 310 kW and an acceleration time of 4.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, the specifications alone are enough to attract performance enthusiasts. We got our hands on a test-drive vehicle, and our main focus this time is to verify whether its balance between performance, luxury, and daily practicality truly lives up to its positioning.
At first glance, the presence of this AMG GLC43 is unmistakable—it's not the ostentatious "muscular" kind of vibe, but rather the unique refined performance aura of AMG. The front features a large-sized vertical-bar grille, with the three-pointed star emblem at the center paired with AMG-exclusive front lip, exuding unmistakable recognition; the LED headlight clusters on both sides are sharp in design, and their signature "eyebrow" DRL design boasts excellent recognizability when lit. The side profile of the car is sleek, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, avoiding a bulky appearance. The 21-inch multi-spoke alloy rims paired with 265/40 R21 (front) and 275/35 R21 (rear) wide tires significantly enhance the performance aesthetics. The rear design is relatively restrained—a classic AMG element is the quad round exhaust pipes on both sides, while the LED taillight clusters with circular light bands offer a clean yet premium look when lit. The diffuser below the rear bumper subtly hints at its performance identity.
Sitting inside, the immediate impression is one of luxury. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, with silver trims accentuating certain details, providing a pleasing tactile and visual experience. The 11.9-inch touch screen in the center console tilts towards the driver, making it intuitive to operate. The fully digital instrument panel and HUD head-up display system work together to show key information such as speed, navigation, and power output, allowing the driver to monitor essential data without taking their eyes off the road. In terms of features, the driver’s seat supports electric adjustment, 4-way lumbar support, and memory function, while the front seats have heating as well. The front passenger seat also has electric adjustment, ensuring comfort on long drives. The rear seats are split 40:20:40 and can be folded down to accommodate larger items when necessary. The Burmester 15-speaker audio system is a highlight, offering delicate sound quality for enjoying music or podcasts during daily drives. A dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear air vents ensures the comfort of both front and rear passengers.
The space performance meets the expectations of a D-segment SUV. Its 2888mm wheelbase provides ample legroom for both front and rear passengers—a 175cm tall passenger sitting in the rear seat will still have more than two fists of space between their knees and the front seat, with about a fist of headroom remaining, ensuring comfort without any sense of confinement. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 545L, easily fitting two 28-inch suitcases and one carry-on. When the rear seats are folded down, the space is expanded, making it sufficient for short family trips or moving items. As for storage space, the large compartment under the center console and the door panel storage slots can hold smartphones, water bottles, and other small daily items without any issues.
The powertrain is the core highlight of this AMG GLC43, featuring a 2.0T turbocharged engine + 48V mild hybrid system. It delivers a combined maximum power of 310kW (421PS) and a maximum torque of 500N·m, paired with a 9-speed DCT gearbox and 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. In actual driving, the start is very brisk in standard mode — a light press on the accelerator easily keeps up with traffic. When switched to sport mode, the throttle response becomes noticeably sharper, and if you step down hard, you can feel a sustained push, especially during mid-to-high acceleration, making overtaking very confident. The official 0-100km/h figure of 4.8 seconds is tangible in real-world driving. The gearbox has a clear shifting logic, with smooth upshifts and active downshifts. In manual mode, using paddles for shifting provides fast response, satisfying occasional "fun driving" needs.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a relatively heavy feel and precise directionality. When cornering, the dynamics of the front end can be clearly felt, with no slack. The chassis uses multi-link independent suspension both at the front and rear. In sport mode, there is good support, with minimal body roll during cornering. When switched to comfort mode, the suspension softens up and handles small road bumps quite seamlessly. Over speed bumps or uneven roads, the vibrations don’t transfer directly to the seats, balancing performance with everyday comfort. The 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system performs commendably on wet roads. During a rainy day, the vehicle remained stable when driving over puddles, with no skidding, instilling great confidence.
As for fuel consumption, our test drive mainly consisted of urban roads with occasional highway driving, resulting in an average fuel consumption of about 11.2L/100km. This is close to the official figure of 10.3L/100km, and considering its performance, this fuel efficiency is reasonable. Noise control is also well-executed, with virtually no engine noise at low speeds. On the highway, tire and wind noise remain within acceptable limits, and the Burmester sound system can easily cover them by just playing audio at a low volume. The braking system also performs stably, offering linear pedal force and short braking distances, giving a sense of safety during daily driving.
Overall, the key strengths of the 2024 AMG GLC43 4Matic+ are clear: it embodies AMG's performance DNA to satisfy driving enthusiasts while retaining the luxurious feel and practicality of the GLC series, making it perfectly suitable for daily use. Compared with competitors like the BMW X3 M40i or Audi SQ5, its configuration is more comprehensive (features like HUD and Burmester sound system come as standard), and it stands out with its enhanced sense of luxury. Priced at 508,888 RM, it offers good value among luxury performance SUVs in its class.
This car is suitable for two types of people: one is young individuals who value performance and luxury, enjoy occasional "spirited driving," and need a car for daily commuting. The other group consists of family-oriented buyers who want premium branding, ample space, and practicality, with the ability to occasionally take their family on trips comfortably.
All in all, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC43 4Matic+ is a car that is both "versatile and powerful" — it delivers the driving pleasure of a performance car and takes care of various aspects of daily usage. If you're looking for a balance between luxury, performance, and practicality, it’s worth considering.
