The luxury coupe SUV market in Malaysia has been steadily growing, as consumers seek the off-road capability and spaciousness of an SUV, while also demanding the streamlined design and sporty feel of a coupe. As a popular choice in this niche market, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe, with its 3.0T hybrid powertrain, AMG-tuned chassis, and a wealth of luxurious features, serves as its core selling points. This test drive will focus on its design, space, and driving performance to see if it meets the expectations of Malaysian consumers for a "balance of luxury and sportiness."

In terms of appearance, this car retains the sporty style of the AMG family while incorporating the sloping roofline of a coupe SUV. The front features a large-sized star emblem grille paired with an AMG-specific front bumper. The sharply designed air intakes on both sides enhance its high recognition. From the side view, the car measures 4939mm in length with a wheelbase of 2935mm, ensuring well-proportioned elegance. The 22-inch rims paired with 285/40 ZR22 tires in the front and 325/35 ZR22 in the rear further enhance the sporty feel. The roofline gradually slopes downwards from the B-pillar, transitioning into a small rear spoiler, aligning with its coupe profile while not excessively compromising rear headroom. At the rear, the quad-tip AMG exhaust system draws attention, while the LED taillights incorporate a continuous light strip design, ensuring clear recognition at night.

Inside, the interior continues Mercedes-Benz's luxurious feel. The center console features a dual 12.3-inch screen design equipped with the MBUX intelligent system, offering smooth operation and voice control support. In terms of materials, extensive use of soft-touch materials combined with metallic trims results in excellent quality. The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in Nappa leather and comes standard with shift paddles, providing a solid grip. On the features front, standard equipment includes HUD head-up display, 360-degree panoramic camera, and automatic parking assist. The rear is equipped with independent LCD screens, enhancing entertainment for rear-seat passengers. Regarding space, the front seats offer multi-directional electric adjustments and good support. The rear legroom is spacious, offering about two fist-widths of space for a 175cm-tall passenger. Although headroom is slightly reduced due to the sloping roof design, there is no significant sense of oppression during daily use. The trunk has a capacity of 655 liters, which can be further expanded by folding the rear seats, accommodating family trips or the transportation of large items.

In terms of power, the 2020 AMG GLE 53 is powered by a 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine combined with a 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a maximum power output of 435PS. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the mild hybrid system provides additional assistance during startup, ensuring quick and smooth power response. When switching to sport mode, the throttle pedal becomes more sensitive, mid-range acceleration is strong, and overtaking requires only a deep press of the accelerator. The transmission quickly downshifts, delivering an obvious push-back feeling. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.3 seconds. During actual tests in Malaysia’s hot and humid environment, the performance was largely consistent with the official data, showcasing stable results.

Regarding handling and chassis performance, the front double-wishbone independent suspension is AMG-tuned, providing excellent support. While driving on the mountainous roads near Malacca, the steering was precise with minimal slack in the steering wheel. The body roll was well-controlled during cornering. When encountering speed bumps or minor road imperfections in urban areas, the suspension efficiently absorbed vibrations, maintaining comfort. The all-wheel-drive system delivers stable traction on wet or mildly off-road surfaces. However, as a coupe SUV, its off-road capability is more suited for urban and paved roads.

In terms of fuel consumption, the vehicle consumes about 10-12L per 100 kilometers under mixed road conditions. Considering its 3.0T engine displacement and AMG identity, this performance meets expectations. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are well suppressed during high-speed driving, and the engine noise is not noticeable during normal driving, only transmitting to the cabin at high revs to create a sporty atmosphere. As for seat comfort, the front seats offer a balanced combination of wrapping and support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats are soft and, combined with the rear air-conditioning vents and power outlets, enhance the comfort for long-distance rides.

In conclusion, the core advantages of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe lie in: the combination of AMG-tuned sporty performance and Mercedes-Benz luxury configurations, balanced interior space, and the smooth power brought by the 48V mild hybrid system. Compared to its class rival, the BMW X6 M40i, it offers richer luxury features (such as rear LCD screens and HUD) and a more competitive price; compared to the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, it offers similar power parameters but with a higher value for money.

This car is suitable for Malaysian consumers who seek both luxury and comfort while also desiring a certain level of sporty performance — for example, middle-to-high income individuals aged 30-45, using it for daily urban commuting, occasional weekend road trips, and valuing the brand's prestige and configuration richness. Overall, it is a "versatile" luxury sport coupe SUV that balances family use with personal driving pleasure quite well.

Pros
The safety configuration is rich and practical, with blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, etc., enhancing the sense of driving safety.
The hybrid system performs excellently, smooth and quiet at low speeds, with strong acceleration and push-back feeling at high speeds.
The coupe design has high aesthetics, with large wheels and a fastback design gaining high attention.
Cons
22-inch thin tires have poor shock absorption, causing noticeable jolts when crossing speed bumps or uneven roads
Small fuel tank capacity requires frequent refueling, inconvenient for long-distance journeys
Large vehicle size necessitates cautious maneuvering on narrow roads and during parking

Driving on the highway in heavy rain, seat heating + blind spot monitoring, instantly boosts the sense of safety!

The hybrid system is quiet during traffic jams, and it accelerates past slow-moving cars without hesitation; the 22-inch tires feel a bit bumpy over speed bumps, but the large rims and fastback design look really stylish. The 360-degree camera helps me park steadily in narrow spaces, and even with three people in the back seat, there's enough legroom to move around. However, the fuel tank is a bit small, so frequent trips to the gas station are necessary.

Previously, I drove a standard GLE SUV, but I switched to the AMG GLE 53 Coupe for its coupe-like lines and hybrid power! During Malaysia's early morning rush hour traffic jams, the 3.0T + mild hybrid's low-end torque is very responsive, unlike pure gasoline cars that lurch; on weekends when driving on the North-South Expressway, switching to Sport+ mode gives a 5.3-second 0-100 km/h push-back feeling, easily leaving my friend's X6 M40i behind. The interior absolutely deserves a 5-star rating, with the Burmester sound system and 64-color ambient lighting. At night, when I take my family to see the Petronas Twin Towers, the rear-seat LCD screens can keep the kids quietly watching cartoons. A minor drawback is the 22-inch low-profile tires, which require slowing down on Kuala Lumpur's pothole-filled roads to avoid bumpy rides. However, with such looks and performance, it's worth every bit of the RM800,000+ price!

Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands. Just after passing Qing Shui Yan, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The 22-inch tires gripped the waterlogged road firmly around bends, and the 4Matic felt as stable as being glued to the ground. Suddenly, the car in front slammed on the brakes, triggering the lane departure warning which vibrated the steering wheel, and the 360-degree camera popped up. Although we didn’t crash, it gave us quite a scare—the safety features are solid, but because the car is big, you still need to be extra careful on narrow roads. The reflection on the central control screen is a bit annoying, but the HUD and rear screens keep the elderly and kids calm. The 3.0T engine easily overtakes trucks on mountain roads; a deep press and it shoots forward. The 5.3-second acceleration is no joke, though the fuel consumption is higher than expected.

When commuting is jammed, the 3.0T turbo in this mild hybrid kicks in smoothly, and overtaking is effortless; the noise from the 22-inch tires is somewhat noticeable on the highway, but with 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera, it feels very stable to drive in the rain. There's enough room in the back seat for three passengers without feeling cramped, although the interior stitching details could be better. Overall, it's worth the price!
