In Malaysia's mid-to-large luxury SUV market, consumers want both the performance DNA of AMG and the comfort and practicality required for daily commuting—a "contradictory demand" for many family users or young professionals. The appearance of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé happens to hit this pain point: it carries the sporty identity of AMG without sacrificing the family-oriented attributes of the GLE series. Its core selling point directly targets the "balance between performance and comfort." In this test drive, we focused on verifying whether it can truly find the optimal balance between track-tuned performance and daily usability.

From a distance, the silhouette of this coupe SUV is highly distinctive. The 4937mm body length combined with a 2935mm wheelbase retains the presence of a mid-to-large SUV, but the sloping roofline gently descends from the B-pillar, softening the bulky appearance of a traditional SUV and adding a touch of coupe agility. The front end continues AMG family features, with the vertical-bar grille embedding the "AMG" badge, complemented by the three-sectional air intakes below, fully amplifying the sporty vibe. The waistline along the side of the car extends from the front fenders to the taillights, and the 22-inch large wheels (285/40 ZR22 at the front, 325/35 ZR22 at the rear) are striking, further enhancing its performance characteristics. The rear design is relatively restrained, with AMG’s signature quad-exhaust layout on both sides. The LED taillight cluster uses a smoked finish, with high visibility when lit. Overall, it lacks the "homey" feel of the standard GLE but is not as ostentatious as the AMG GLE 63, achieving just the right balance.

Opening the car door, one is greeted by a strong sense of luxury inside. The dashboard boasts Mercedes-Benz's latest dual 12-inch integrated screen design. The fully digital instrument panel offers multiple display modes, and the central touchscreen is highly responsive. The interior materials are of high quality, with most areas covered in soft leather. The door panels and seats are adorned with stitching details, and metal trim, along with piano black accents, can be felt in finer touches, matching the luxury brand’s positioning. In terms of features, it is well-equipped: the front seats come with electric adjustment, the Burmester 13-speaker sound system is standard, and the rear seats are equipped with independent air conditioning and LCD screens. The storage spaces are also decent—the front central armrest compartment is deep enough to hold two bottles of water, door pockets can accommodate mobile phones and folding umbrellas, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 630 liters. The rear seats can fold in a 60:40 ratio, making it easy to fit a stroller or golf bag.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, once you adjust the seating position (the electric adjustment range is extensive, making it easy to find a comfortable posture), there is a one-fist and two-fingers headroom clearance. Rear legroom offers about two fists’ space, ensuring even passengers who are 180cm tall will not feel cramped in the back. The panoramic sunroof is generously sized, offering rear passengers a more open view.

As for power, this car is equipped with a 3.0L inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine coupled with a 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 320kW (435PS) and a maximum torque of 560N·m. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5 seconds. During the actual test drive, the power response at startup is very prompt, and even a light press on the accelerator provides an obvious push-back feel. This is especially true in Sport+ mode, where the transmission's gear-shifting logic is more aggressive, with quick downshifts. When overtaking, stepping on the accelerator deeply unleashes instantaneous power, making it hard to believe this is a 2.3-ton SUV. For daily commutes, Comfort mode is sufficient, as the engine’s RPM stays at a low level, and the mild hybrid system assists during starts and stops, reducing fuel consumption and ensuring smoother driving.

Handling performance is a strong suit of AMG models, and this car is no exception. The steering feel is very precise, with minimal slack, and the effort adjustment with speed is very linear—light at low speeds and stable at high speeds. The suspension system adopts a front double-wishbone + rear multi-link independent structure, tuned on the firmer side, but not the kind of firmness that makes it uncomfortable. When crossing speed bumps, the suspension quickly filters out vibrations without unnecessary bouncing; in corners, body roll is well-controlled, allowing the car to maintain a stable posture even at higher speeds. The performance of the all-wheel-drive system is also worth mentioning, as it can adjust the power distribution between the front and rear axles in real-time based on road conditions. On wet and slippery roads, the vehicle's grip is significantly improved, providing a strong sense of safety.

As for noise control, it performs very well. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise are well suppressed. Only during rapid acceleration does the engine's roar enter the cabin, but the sound is not jarring; instead, it inspires a stronger desire to drive. The seats offer good support, ensuring that long drives are not tiring.

We also tested its fuel efficiency. Under mixed driving conditions (60% city roads, 40% highways), its average fuel consumption is around 10.5L/100km. For a 3.0T mid-to-large SUV, this result is fairly standard. The braking system also excels, with a linear pedal feel and evenly distributed braking force. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains very stable with no signs of veering off course.

Overall, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé has clear core strengths: it carries AMG's performance DNA to satiate occasional "driving cravings" while retaining the comfort and practicality of the GLE series, making it suitable for daily commuting and family use. Compared to its peers (like the BMW X6 M40i), it comes with richer standard features (such as rear LCD screens and Burmester audio system) and offers a stronger sense of luxury, yet the price is relatively affordable (RM 813,888).

If you are a consumer who values "balance" — seeking the prestige of a luxury brand, the driving pleasure of a performance car, and the practicality needed for family use, then this car is absolutely worth considering. It avoids being as "extreme" as pure performance cars, yet is not as "mundane" as regular luxury SUVs, striking a perfect balance to meet all your expectations for a mid-to-large SUV.

In conclusion, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé is an "all-rounder" that proves performance and comfort can indeed coexist.

Overtaking during the morning rush is smooth with a 3.0T engine + mild hybrid system; the start-stop system works smoothly without abruptness when stuck in traffic. The 22-inch tires feel a bit bumpy over speed bumps, but the space is sufficient, and three people can sit comfortably in the rear row without feeling cramped. The safety features are fully equipped, making highway driving very reassuring, but the car's large size requires extra caution when finding parking spots.

Switch to sport mode during the morning rush, overtake effortlessly, and the hybrid system even saves some fuel money; turn on the Burmester sound system, and even traffic jams become enjoyable. However, as stylish as the fastback design is, the rear headroom isn’t very friendly to tall friends—what a pity.

Today in a rainy storm driving on mountain roads, stepping on the gas through the turn felt as steady as being glued to the ground, full sense of security!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just as we got onto the mountain road, it started pouring rain. The 22-inch tires skidded with a "sizzle" sound when going through water on the curves—this 3.0T engine + 48V hybrid system certainly has enough power, with acceleration from 0 to 100 in 5 seconds providing plenty of thrust for uphill climbs, but these wide tires on Malaysia's rainy and slippery roads feel like wearing ice skates! The coupe's fastback design is stylish, but the rear seat is so low that the elderly nearly bumped their heads on the roof, and the 630L trunk was completely full after fitting just two boxes of durians. This car, priced at over 800,000 MYR, has such slow air conditioning cooling that my family had to fan themselves. The AMG badge looks impressive, but the finer details really don't match this price tag!

Driving on mountain roads in heavy rain, 4MATIC+ grip is unbelievably stable, taking corners like it's glued to the ground!
