In Malaysia's executive sedan market, competition among luxury brands has always revolved around the "sense of value" — consumers want the brand heritage of the three-pointed star while hoping to find a balance between features and price. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 Avantgarde is a model targeting this demand. With a relatively affordable price (RM 330,240), it retains the luxurious feel and core safety features characteristic of the E-Class, while also taking everyday practicality into account. In this test, we primarily aim to verify whether it can strike a perfect balance between "entry-level luxury" and "daily usability."

Approaching the E200 Avantgarde, the first impression is the typical executive style of Mercedes-Benz. The front face adopts the Avantgarde package with a large star-patterned grille, flanked by sharp LED headlight groups. The daytime running lights continue the iconic "four-eye" design of the E-Class, offering high recognition. The flowing lines along the side profile of the body, along with a 4935mm length and 2939mm wheelbase, create an elongated proportion. The 18-inch multi-spoke wheels (albeit not equipped with AMG sport rims) also maintain a sense of luxury. At the rear, the horizontal layout of the LED tail lamps forms a double-L light strip when illuminated, echoing the front design. The hidden exhaust layout beneath the rear bumper further enhances its composed demeanor. The overall exterior design does not feature overly aggressive elements, aligning well with the positioning of an executive sedan.

Opening the door, the luxurious feel of the interior is overwhelming. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials paired with wood grain panels and metallic trim, offering a refined tactile experience. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen form a dual-screen layout, with a high degree of interface fluency; it supports both touch control and physical button operations on the steering wheel. The standard dual-zone automatic air conditioning system retains physical buttons for the front row, making blind operation more convenient; the rear row also features independent air vents and power outlets to cater to passengers' needs. The seats are wrapped in leather material, with front seats offering electric adjustment and lumbar support fine-tuning, providing good wrapping and comfort for long periods of seating. In terms of storage space, the center armrest box is moderately sized, the door panel storage compartments can hold two water bottles, and the trunk has sufficient capacity to store 2-3 suitcases, meeting the daily needs of a family.

Starting the vehicle, the combination of the 2.0T turbocharged engine (197PS/320N·m) and 9AT transmission delivers a steady performance. In normal driving mode, the initial response is smooth, and the accelerator pedal is tuned linearly, making it suitable for congested urban conditions. When stepping on the accelerator, the turbocharger engages as early as 1650rpm, and there is enough power in the middle and late stages of acceleration. Overtaking maneuvers can be accomplished with just a light press on the accelerator. Switching to sport mode makes the transmission's shift logic more aggressive, with quicker downshifts and more direct power delivery; overall, however, the tuning remains biased toward comfort. The steering wheel offers moderate resistance, has minimal play, and provides precise directional control, consistent with the characteristics of an executive sedan. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson, rear multi-link structure with soft tuning, effectively filtering minor road vibrations. The impact when passing speed bumps is softened, but there is noticeable body roll during fast cornering, making it more suitable for steady driving.

In daily driving, the E200 Avantgarde demonstrates outstanding comfort. The noise control in the cabin is well-handled, with tire noise and wind noise being almost negligible below a speed of 80km/h; at 120km/h, a slight wind noise can be heard inside the cabin but it does not affect conversation. In terms of fuel consumption, after testing in urban traffic and on highways, the actual fuel consumption is about 9.5L/100km, which is on par with other 2.0T models in the same segment. As for safety features, it comes standard with 7 airbags, active braking, lane change assist, forward collision warning, etc., which are fully in line with the higher-spec E300 AMG Line, which is commendable.

Overall, the core strength of the E200 Avantgarde lies in its "balance." Compared to competitors in the same segment, it retains the iconic luxury design, dual-screen interior, and complete active safety features of the E-Class, all at a price approximately RM70,000 lower than the E300 AMG Line, offering outstanding value for money. While its power output is not as strong as the E300, and it lacks the Burmester sound system and 360-degree panoramic camera, these features are not essential for most users. This car is more suitable for consumers who value brand heritage, prioritize everyday comfort and safety, and are price-sensitive—such as middle-class families balancing business and family use, or young buyers looking for their first luxury executive car.

In summary, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 Avantgarde is a "practical luxury car" that avoids excessive flashy features but focuses on spending where it counts. If you desire the quality of the three-pointed star emblem but do not want to pay for unnecessary performance, it makes for an excellent choice in the executive car market.
