Mercedes-Benz GLC 2023 Review

The competition in Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market has always been intense. Consumers want the prestige of the tri-pointed star brand while expecting practical space and balanced performance. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC (CKD) aims to meet this demand. As a fully localized assembly of the new generation, it not only continues the family design language but also upgrades its hybrid system and smart configurations. Priced at RM 378,888, it is more appealing than its predecessor. In this test drive, we focus on its daily driving texture, practical space, and the actual performance of the hybrid system to see if it can become the "hexagonal warrior" of its class.
At first glance, you can immediately recognize the GLC 300’s family identity—the front features a large shield-shaped grille with the classic tri-pointed star studded design inside, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognizability. The vehicle's side profile is streamlined, with a waistline stretching from the A-pillar to the rear, making the car appear elongated, and the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels add a sense of sportiness. The horizontally designed LED tail lights at the rear present a unique "double L" light strip when illuminated, echoing the front. Notably, the body dimensions have increased compared to the previous generation: it measures 4716mm in length, 1890mm in width, 1640mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2888mm, directly competing with its class rivals in spatial performance.
Sitting inside, the luxurious feel of the interior is overwhelming. The center console features a layered design, with an 11.9-inch floating touchscreen tilted 6 degrees towards the driver for easier operation. Beneath it, some physical buttons, such as the air conditioning adjustment knobs, are retained, balancing technology and practicality. In terms of materials, the seats and the interior sides of the doors are covered with leather, offering a delicate touch. The dashboard trims use matte wood grain panels, enhancing the sense of quality. When it comes to configurations, it performs very well: the front seats support electric adjustment with 4-way lumbar support, and the rear features independent air conditioning vents. The digital instrument panel displays clearly and allows theme switching for different driving modes. Standard features include a 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, keyless entry/start, and they all provide daily convenience.
Space is a major highlight of the GLC 300. With the extended wheelbase, the rear legroom is notably spacious—a passenger 175cm tall sitting in the rear still has a two-fist gap between their knees and the front seats, and there is also a one-fist headroom, ensuring no sense of oppression. The trunk has a capacity of 620L, which can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases and one cabin suitcase without any issue. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding design, and when folded, it expands to 1640L, making it effortless to transport large items. In addition, the car offers abundant storage compartments: the center armrest compartment is sufficiently deep, the door panel storage slots can hold bottles and umbrellas, and the front row includes a wireless charging pad, showcasing thoughtful details.
The GLC 300 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine + 48V mild hybrid system, offering a combined system output of 260PS and peak torque of 370N·m (engine) + 200N·m (motor), paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, the intervention of the mild hybrid system is very smooth, with the motor providing additional power during startup. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.2 seconds. In our actual experience, the power response was quick when pressing the accelerator deeply, with effortless overtaking. The transmission's shifting logic is clear, with almost no jerkiness at low speeds. During high-speed cruising, it proactively shifts up to maintain low RPM.
In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal slack, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering; the suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link structure, tuned for comfort — when going over speed bumps or uneven roads, most of the jolts are filtered out, and rear passengers won’t feel significant discomfort. Meanwhile, at high speeds, the chassis feels solid enough without any sense of floating. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system performs stably on slippery roads, distributing torque between the front and rear wheels during turns to enhance grip.
Fuel consumption of the hybrid system is a key focus for us. The official combined fuel consumption is 7.1L/100km, and in our test conducted with a mix of city and highway driving, the final displayed consumption was 7.5L/100km. Considering the 2.0T engine displacement and the all-wheel-drive system, this result is excellent. The noise control is also well-executed: while cruising at 120km/h on the highway, wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable, with the engine speed maintained under 2000rpm, keeping the cabin quiet. The seats provide good support and wrapping, ensuring you won’t feel fatigued during long drives. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels, and at the highest level, lifting off the accelerator results in mild braking, which is suitable for urban traffic conditions.
Overall, the 2023 GLC 300 4MATIC (CKD) has clear advantages: firstly, space — the extended wheelbase makes the rear row performance class-leading; secondly, configuration — standard features like a 360-degree camera, automatic parking, and electric seats are more comprehensive compared to similarly priced competitors; and thirdly, the hybrid system — excellent fuel efficiency reduces daily usage costs. Compared to rivals like the BMW X3 or Audi Q5L, it stands out with superior luxury and space, and its pricing is more competitive.
Who is this car suitable for? If you are a family user who values brand quality and needs an SUV that balances daily commuting with family outings, this car is an excellent choice. If you are a younger consumer looking for the prestige of a luxury brand without compromising practicality, it also meets your needs. Of course, if you are pursuing extreme sporty performance, you might find its suspension tuning a bit soft, but for most people, this "balance" is precisely the best option.
In conclusion, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC (CKD) is a luxury mid-size SUV with "no obvious weaknesses" — it delivers in brand reputation, space, features, and fuel consumption. With localized assembly, its value for money is further enhanced. If you are considering buying a luxury mid-size SUV, it’s worth adding to your shortlist.
