In Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market, coupe-style models are gradually gaining favor among consumers who value a balance between design and practicality. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC AMG Line Coupe is a new option in this niche segment. It not only continues the balanced performance of the GLC series but also enhances its sporty feeling with coupe lines, while the mild hybrid system optimizes fuel efficiency. For this test drive, we mainly aim to verify whether its coupe design affects practicality, and how the mild hybrid powertrain performs in daily driving.

From the exterior, the overall style of this car leans towards sporty luxury. The front adopts the AMG Line package, with a large star-studded grille paired with chrome trim, making it highly recognizable; the sharp-shaped LED headlights on both sides blend seamlessly with the grille, creating a clear visual effect when illuminated. The side profile showcases the core design of a coupe; the sloping roofline transitions smoothly from the B-pillar to the rear, combined with 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, which maintain the high ground clearance of an SUV while achieving a coupe's dynamic appearance. At the rear, the highlight is the full-width LED taillight cluster, which features a three-segment light strip design, offering high recognition when lit at night. The diffuser-like design under the rear bumper and the dual exhaust layout (decorative, not functional) further enhance the sporty ambiance.

Entering the cabin, the interior continues Mercedes' latest family design language. The overall materials are solid, with large areas of soft leather covering the dashboard and door panels, paired with metal trims and piano lacquer panels, creating a luxurious atmosphere. The center console is centered on a 11.9-inch floating touchscreen that tilts 6 degrees towards the driver, making it more convenient to operate. The system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with smooth response speed. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument cluster displays information clearly and can switch between multiple modes such as classic and sporty. It also allows customization to display navigation, fuel consumption, and other information. In terms of features, the front seats support electric adjustment, memory, heating, and ventilation functions, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, increasing the trunk capacity from the standard 545L to a larger space, which is sufficient for daily items like baby strollers or suitcases. Additionally, standard features such as a HUD head-up display, 360-degree panoramic camera, wireless charging, and independent rear air conditioning maximize convenience.

In terms of space performance, the vehicle measures 4732mm×1890mm×1699mm, with a wheelbase of 2888mm, which is in line with mainstream levels in its class. The front row offers ample seating space, with about a fist of headroom remaining for a 180cm tall driver after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom is about two fists, and the headroom, while affected by the sloping roofline, is roughly one fist, making it sufficient for daily use even though it is not as spacious as a traditional SUV. Regarding storage capacity, the door pockets can hold two large water bottles, the central armrest box is moderately sized, and the front row also has two cup holders and a wireless charging pad. The rear armrest includes cup holders, and there is also storage space in the door panels, ensuring practicality.

Powertrain: The vehicle is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine + 48V mild hybrid system, with a combined system output of 190kW (258PS) and maximum torque of 400N·m. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. During daily driving, the mild hybrid system assists the engine during startup and low-speed phases, ensuring smooth starts and responsive throttle. When switched to Sport mode, the power output becomes more direct, delivering a noticeable push-back feel under acceleration. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.3 seconds. During actual testing, the tires experienced slight slippage when starting after turning off the ESP, but the four-wheel drive system quickly engaged, with the final performance closely matching the official data. For mid-to-high-speed overtaking, the transmission downshifts proactively, delivering instant power reserves and making overtaking effortless.

Handling: The steering wheel offers precise control with minimal play, feeling light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, giving a good hand feel. The chassis uses independent multi-link suspension at both the front and rear, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs most shocks when crossing speed bumps or bumpy roads, keeping the vehicle stable. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, offering sufficient support with no significant wobbling. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system enhances traction on slippery roads or light off-road conditions, while primarily operating in front-wheel-drive mode during daily driving to improve fuel efficiency.

Fuel consumption: The official combined fuel consumption is stated as 2.6L/100km (with the assistance of the mild hybrid system). During actual testing, the fuel consumption in urban traffic was approximately 8.5L/100km, about 6.5L/100km on highways, and around 7.5L/100km on average. Considering the 2.0T engine combined with all-wheel drive, this performance is among the upper mid-range level for its class. The braking system performed stably, with a 100-0km/h braking distance of about 38 meters, meeting the standard for luxury mid-size SUVs.

Comfort: The sound insulation is excellent, with wind and tire noise well controlled even at a speed of 120km/h on the highway, allowing for normal conversations inside the cabin. Engine noise is slightly audible during aggressive acceleration but not to an irritating extent. The mild hybrid system's operation is virtually imperceptible, having no impact on the driving experience. The seats provide good support and are well-cushioned, ensuring adequate lumbar support during long journeys, thus avoiding fatigue.

In summary, the 2023 GLC 300 4MATIC AMG Line Coupe has distinct core strengths: its coupe design balances sportiness and luxury, the interior materials and configurations are premium, the space meets family needs, the powertrain is smooth with reasonable fuel consumption, and it offers a well-balanced mix of handling and comfort. Compared to its competitors like the BMW X4 and Audi Q5 Sportback, it offers more comprehensive features (front seat ventilation and HUD head-up display are standard), a more luxurious interior feel, and better value for money.

This car is ideal for a clear target audience: young family users aged 25-40 who desire the sporty style of a coupe with the practicality of an SUV; or consumers who value luxury and features, suitable for both daily commuting and weekend family trips. If you're not pursuing ultimate handling but prefer a well-rounded, comfortable, and prestigious luxury sport coupe SUV, this vehicle is an excellent choice.

Last week, I took my wife and kids to Genting Highlands. It was raining heavily while climbing hills. The coupe styling with the AMG package was worth choosing. When parking by the roadside to buy water, the guy in the car next to us even turned around and gave it a second look. The interior's Burmester sound system played children's songs all the way, and the rear air conditioning was cool enough that the kids didn’t fuss. However, the active braking system was accidentally triggered once on the way downhill, giving me a scare. Although the safety features are comprehensive, the sensitivity needs some adjustment. The 4MATIC grip is indeed steady; there was no slipping on wet curves. It's just that the fuel consumption was much higher than the claimed 2.6. In city traffic jams, it reaches over 8.

As a GLC Coupe owner, I compared it to the BMW X4 and ultimately chose it because the hybrid system combined with the AMG package felt more satisfying. During the morning rush hour near KLCC, when traffic is like a parking lot, the 2.0T + 48V mild hybrid provides super smooth starts, with the electric motor assistance making it free from jerks, and even with the air conditioning fully on, it doesn't feel sluggish. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting, the 4MATIC handles uphill climbs very steadily, and the ACC cruise control frees up the right foot. The safety features are top-notch — last time on a rainy day, it almost avoided a rear-end collision thanks to the active braking system. The interior is luxurious, but the touchscreen has a bit of glare under sunlight, which is a small regret. Overall, for driving in Malaysia, it delivers in looks, power, and safety, making it worth the price!

Every day I rely on its 2.0T + motor hybrid to get through traffic, acceleration and overtaking are not sluggish at all. The 6.3-second 0-100 km/h performance gives me great confidence to overtake trucks on the highway! However, the safety features lack lane centering, which makes me a bit nervous when I'm distracted occasionally, but everything else is satisfactory~

Last week I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we turned onto the winding mountain road, we encountered a sudden downpour. The 285 rear tires gripped the slippery asphalt road, and the 4MATIC felt as stable as if it were glued to the ground. The 11.9-inch central control screen's navigation remained clear in the rain and fog, and the HUD projected the speed limit onto the windshield, so there's no need to look down. The kids in the back were lying down watching the raindrops fall through the sunroof. The 545-liter trunk held a foldable stroller and three boxes of fruit with room to spare. However, the coupe's sloping rear makes it appear wide on narrow mountain roads, so extra care is needed when passing other cars – though the design is sleek, on Malaysia's winding paths, it's best to hold back a bit.

Last week, I took my family for an outing at the foot of Cloud Top Mountain. A sudden downpour made the mountain roads as slippery as if they were oiled. Just as I was about to step on the gas to overtake, the vehicle stability system suddenly engaged, and with a slight pull of the steering wheel, it brought the car back on track—this safety feature was definitely worth the money. However, when three adults are seated in the back row, the knee room is a bit cramped, and you have to adjust the front seats a bit forward. The center control screen responds quite quickly, and voice control for the air conditioning works without having to repeat commands. But the cup holder in the passenger seat is a bit shallow, causing the coffee cup to wobble.
