MINI 3 Door 2018 Review

The B-segment market in Malaysia has no shortage of options, but models that balance classic design and daily practicality are rare — the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper is one such example. As the brand's entry-level three-door model, it retains MINI's iconic retro rounded design while meeting urban commuting needs with its 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine and a 4-year unlimited mileage warranty. This time, we got our hands on the Cooper version test car, and the main purpose was to verify whether it fits local consumers' daily usage scenarios in terms of design, space, and driving experience.
At first glance, it's hard not to be drawn to the classic styling of the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper. The body dimensions are 3821mm×1727mm×1414mm, with a wheelbase of 2495mm. The overall silhouette maintains the MINI family’s short front overhang and high beltline design, complemented by a rounded hood and iconic "quad-eye" LED headlights, giving it standout recognition. The front face features a black honeycomb grille without extra ornamentation, keeping the entry-level model's simplicity intact. The waistline on the side of the body extends from the fender to the taillight, paired with 16-inch tires and multi-spoke rims, adding a hint of agility to the retro appeal. The round LED taillights at the rear echo the headlights, while the hidden exhaust under the rear bumper downplays its sporty attributes, leaning more towards a daily commuting orientation.
Opening the door, the interior design also continues the retro style. The circular multimedia area on the upper part of the dashboard is the visual centerpiece. Although it does not include a touchscreen, the physical buttons have a clear layout and are easy to use. The seats are made of fabric, with manual adjustment for the front seats. The cushions and backrests offer good support, and long periods of sitting won't cause fatigue. In terms of features, the Cooper version comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and 4 airbags. The addition of a 220V/230V power outlet also makes it convenient for rear passengers to charge their devices. Regarding space, the front row offers adequate headroom and legroom for passengers about 175cm tall. Although the rear seat is labeled as a 4-seater, it is better suited for short trips. A 165cm tall passenger will have about a fist's worth of legroom, while headroom feels slightly constrained. The trunk has a capacity of 211L, which can easily fit two carry-on suitcases, but unfortunately, the rear seats cannot be folded down, limiting expandability.
The driving experience is one of the core highlights of the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper. It is equipped with a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 138PS and peak torque available at 1250rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The throttle response is quick during takeoff, with no obvious delay in turbo input, making it agile for following cars in urban traffic jams. When accelerating to 80km/h, the power remains ample, and pressing the accelerator hard during overtaking provides a fairly satisfying push-back sensation. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds is considered above average for a B-segment model. As for the chassis, the combination of front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned toward firmness, resulting in noticeable bumps when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads. However, this firmness contributes to precise steering feel — the steering wheel has minimal play, body roll is well-controlled when cornering, and the lightweight body of 1115kg ensures outstanding overall handling within its segment. Fuel efficiency meets expectations; during our test across mixed urban and highway conditions, the measured fuel consumption was approximately 5.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 4.7L but still commendable given the local traffic conditions. As for noise control, the cabin remains quiet at speeds below 60km/h. Beyond 80km/h, tire noise becomes more noticeable, but it doesn’t affect normal conversation.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper lies in its "balance"—its classic design meets aesthetic needs, its nimble driving experience suits urban commuting, and the 4-year unlimited mileage warranty alleviates concerns about later use. Compared to competitors in the same class such as the Honda Jazz or Toyota Yaris, it stands out in terms of handling and brand appeal, but its rear seat space and trunk expandability are its shortcomings. This car is more suitable for young consumers who value driving pleasure and design sense, or as a family’s second car; if frequent full occupancy for 5 people is needed, it might be worth considering the MINI 5-door version. All in all, the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper is not an "all-rounder" model, but it excels in the areas it specializes in, making it a good choice in the B-segment market that balances nostalgia and practicality.
