MINI 3 Door 2023 Review

The B-segment small car market has never been short of choices, but models that can simultaneously balance driving pleasure and brand recognition are always a minority. The 2023 MINI 3 Door Cooper S, with its 192PS 2.0T turbocharged engine, iconic retro design, and 4-year unlimited mileage warranty, precisely meets the needs of consumers pursuing individuality and driving dynamics. This time, we got our hands on the actual car, and the main purpose is to evaluate its performance in daily commuting and weekend driving to see if this classic small car can still hold onto MINI's "driving essence."
At first glance of the 2023 MINI 3 Door Cooper S, the classic combination of round headlights and front grille immediately catches the eye, while the LED lighting adds a modern touch to the retro design. Both automatic headlights and daytime running lights come as standard. The side profile has tight lines, with a length of 3876mm and a width of 1727mm giving it a well-proportioned and sporty look. The 205/45 R17 tires match its sporty positioning perfectly. The rear design is equally simple, and the iconic taillight set lights up with high recognition. The rear fog light and reversing radar are also fully equipped. The overall appearance retains MINI's family genes while upgrading details to align with modern aesthetics.
Opening the car door, the interior layout continues the brand's consistent simple style. The center console is centered around an 8.8-inch touchscreen with clear operational logic, and the Sound Plus function along with the 6-speaker system satisfies daily audio needs. The seats are manually adjustable, which, while not as convenient as electric adjustments, have a range that covers most drivers' seating needs. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is a practical feature, allowing front-row passengers to adjust the temperature according to their preferences. In terms of space, the wheelbase of 2495mm ensures front-row comfort, with over one fist of headroom and legroom available for passengers of 175cm height. The rear space is more suitable for short trips, as longer journeys might feel a bit cramped. The 211L trunk can accommodate two carry-on suitcases, meeting the needs for commuting or short trips.
Starting the car, the sound of the 2.0T turbocharged engine is not overly aggressive, but stepping on the accelerator instantly highlights the 192PS horsepower's confidence. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.7 seconds, and in actual driving, the start response is quick. The DCT gearbox shifts smoothly, and there is sufficient power reserve for mid-to-high acceleration. Stepping on the accelerator for overtaking gives a noticeable push-back feeling. The steering feel is precise with very little slack, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering. The multi-link independent rear suspension effectively absorbs most minor road bumps while maintaining good road feedback, in line with the positioning of a sporty small car. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 5.7L/100km, and our real-world test on city commuting with minor highway use resulted in about 6.3L/100km, which is decent.
During daily driving, the vehicle's noise control is well-handled. Both wind noise and tire noise are within acceptable ranges at high speeds. The seat cushioning provides good support, ensuring that long drives are not too tiring. In terms of safety features, six airbags, active braking, lane departure warning, and more are equipped, adding extra confidence to everyday driving.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 MINI 3 Door Cooper S lie in its precise handling performance, iconic retro design, and well-balanced configuration level. Compared to peers like the Toyota YARiS Cross or Honda HR-V, it offers superior driving fun and brand recognition; although its space falls short of these SUV models, for users who value individuality and driving experience, this trade-off is worthwhile.
This car is most suitable for young consumers aged 25-35, especially those who seek driving pleasure, appreciate unique designs, and need a reliable model for daily commuting. If you don't need a lot of space and care more about the driving feel and turning heads, then the MINI 3 Door Cooper S is a good choice. Overall, it continues the sporty DNA of the MINI family while achieving a balance between configuration and practicality, making it a "characterful" and fun-to-drive city car.
