The B-segment small car market has never been short of choices, but models that can simultaneously balance driving pleasure and brand recognition are always a minority. The 2023 MINI 3 Door Cooper S, with its 192PS 2.0T turbocharged engine, iconic retro design, and 4-year unlimited mileage warranty, precisely meets the needs of consumers pursuing individuality and driving dynamics. This time, we got our hands on the actual car, and the main purpose is to evaluate its performance in daily commuting and weekend driving to see if this classic small car can still hold onto MINI's "driving essence."

At first glance of the 2023 MINI 3 Door Cooper S, the classic combination of round headlights and front grille immediately catches the eye, while the LED lighting adds a modern touch to the retro design. Both automatic headlights and daytime running lights come as standard. The side profile has tight lines, with a length of 3876mm and a width of 1727mm giving it a well-proportioned and sporty look. The 205/45 R17 tires match its sporty positioning perfectly. The rear design is equally simple, and the iconic taillight set lights up with high recognition. The rear fog light and reversing radar are also fully equipped. The overall appearance retains MINI's family genes while upgrading details to align with modern aesthetics.

Opening the car door, the interior layout continues the brand's consistent simple style. The center console is centered around an 8.8-inch touchscreen with clear operational logic, and the Sound Plus function along with the 6-speaker system satisfies daily audio needs. The seats are manually adjustable, which, while not as convenient as electric adjustments, have a range that covers most drivers' seating needs. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is a practical feature, allowing front-row passengers to adjust the temperature according to their preferences. In terms of space, the wheelbase of 2495mm ensures front-row comfort, with over one fist of headroom and legroom available for passengers of 175cm height. The rear space is more suitable for short trips, as longer journeys might feel a bit cramped. The 211L trunk can accommodate two carry-on suitcases, meeting the needs for commuting or short trips.

Starting the car, the sound of the 2.0T turbocharged engine is not overly aggressive, but stepping on the accelerator instantly highlights the 192PS horsepower's confidence. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.7 seconds, and in actual driving, the start response is quick. The DCT gearbox shifts smoothly, and there is sufficient power reserve for mid-to-high acceleration. Stepping on the accelerator for overtaking gives a noticeable push-back feeling. The steering feel is precise with very little slack, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering. The multi-link independent rear suspension effectively absorbs most minor road bumps while maintaining good road feedback, in line with the positioning of a sporty small car. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 5.7L/100km, and our real-world test on city commuting with minor highway use resulted in about 6.3L/100km, which is decent.

During daily driving, the vehicle's noise control is well-handled. Both wind noise and tire noise are within acceptable ranges at high speeds. The seat cushioning provides good support, ensuring that long drives are not too tiring. In terms of safety features, six airbags, active braking, lane departure warning, and more are equipped, adding extra confidence to everyday driving.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 MINI 3 Door Cooper S lie in its precise handling performance, iconic retro design, and well-balanced configuration level. Compared to peers like the Toyota YARiS Cross or Honda HR-V, it offers superior driving fun and brand recognition; although its space falls short of these SUV models, for users who value individuality and driving experience, this trade-off is worthwhile.

This car is most suitable for young consumers aged 25-35, especially those who seek driving pleasure, appreciate unique designs, and need a reliable model for daily commuting. If you don't need a lot of space and care more about the driving feel and turning heads, then the MINI 3 Door Cooper S is a good choice. Overall, it continues the sporty DNA of the MINI family while achieving a balance between configuration and practicality, making it a "characterful" and fun-to-drive city car.

Pros
Comprehensive safety configuration, ISOFIX seat fixation is stable, the stability control system intervenes timely, and 6 airbags provide a sense of security
Strong acceleration performance, 7.3 seconds to 100 km/h, agile overtaking, precise steering, good handling on mountain road curves
The 8.8-inch center control touch screen is responsive and operates smoothly, CarPlay connection is convenient, and the Harman Kardon sound system offers a great experience
Cons
The trunk space is small, making it difficult to accommodate a stroller, rain gear, and backpacks simultaneously.
The car body is low, raising concerns about roof scraping when entering parking lots, and the small size requires extra care when parking.
Charging facilities are inconvenient, finding charging stations is difficult, the driving range is short, and the actual range is only about 190km when using air conditioning.

Last Thursday after work, I encountered a heavy rainstorm, and the downtown area of Kuala Lumpur was completely congested. Driving my MINI 3 Door Cooper SE, crawling slowly through the puddles, I was suddenly rear-ended by the car behind me. My first reaction was to check on my daughter in the back seat, and fortunately, the ISOFIX-secured child safety seat was completely stable. Although the six airbags didn't deploy, the stability control system intervened in time, and the car didn't veer off course. I got out to examine the car and found a crack in the tail light, but the paint wasn't significantly scratched. When I got back in the car, my daughter was still playing the mini-games on the central touchscreen. The 8.8-inch display is quite responsive. However, after fitting in the stroller and rain gear in the trunk, there's no room left for even a backpack. That said, on mountain roads, the car's acceleration of 7.3 seconds is genuinely impressive, and the steering is so precise it feels like playing a simulator. The circular design elements and piano lacquer finish in the interior may attract fingerprints easily, but the texture feels great. My only regret is that the car's height is too low, making me constantly worried about scraping the roof when entering parking lots.

This appearance is absolutely stunning! Every time I park by the roadside, people keep looking back, but finding a charging pile takes forever, so exhausting.

Every time it's traffic jam, its 2.0T turbocharged engine accelerates instantly, making overtaking super satisfying! Just need to be careful when parking since the car body is small, but it's manageable with the reverse camera. The interior is a bit lacking; manually adjusting the seats is a bit troublesome, but the Harman Kardon sound system is amazing, making listening to music during traffic jams bearable.

Last week after work, I encountered heavy rain in Kuala Lumpur, and the water accumulation on the highway caused the car to skid. The vehicle stability control quickly intervened to bring it back on track, and the active braking provided a warning when the car in front suddenly braked. The 6 airbags and anti-lock braking system provided a strong sense of safety, but the manual parking brake felt a bit inconvenient when starting on a slippery slope. Safety rating: 4 stars. The interior’s Harman Kardon sound system was very comforting during traffic jams. The 8.8-inch touchscreen operated smoothly, and the dual-zone air conditioning was very practical for combating the humid heat, but the manually adjustable seats were slightly tiring for long trips. A reasonable interior rating: 4 stars.

Previously drove a fuel-powered hatchback, switching to this MINI Electric feels like a whole new lifestyle — in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, its 7.3-second 0-100km/h acceleration is super agile, easily zipping through traffic compared to the BYD Atto 3 next door! Full safety features with 6 airbags + active braking; last time on the Penang mountain roads, I almost rear-ended another car but the system braked for me just in time, definitely adds a sense of security. But the range really needs to be managed carefully. The official range of 232km drops to about 190km with the A/C on, so for weekend trips to Genting Highlands' base, you’ve got to plan for charging. Adults in the back seat will have their knees against the front seats, so it’s mostly for kids or occasional friends. However, the Resolute edition in British Racing Green with vintage wheels totally hits the spot for me, and the HUD and electric seats are convenient enough. It’s still perfect for city commuting!
