In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment market has intensified, and consumers are no longer satisfied with basic transportation functionality. They place greater emphasis on a balance between design recognition, practicality of features, and driving pleasure. The 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S, as one of the few five-door models under the brand, has garnered great attention since its launch in December last year, thanks to its 2.0T turbocharged power, five-seat layout, and MINI's iconic design language. This time, we got our hands on the actual car, and the core purpose is to verify whether it can satisfy family users' needs for space and features while retaining MINI's driving DNA, and to evaluate if its pricing at RM 293,000 is competitive.

From the exterior, the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S continues the brand's classic round headlight design, but with some detailed adjustments — the LED headlights now feature circular daytime running lights inside, which are highly recognizable when lit. The front grille has been downsized, paired with a sporty front bumper underneath, giving the overall style a retro MINI feel while adding a touch of sportiness. The side profile of the car is simple and sleek, with the five-door design making the rear doors' proportions look more balanced. The 17-inch alloy wheels (fitted on the test vehicle) further reinforce the sporty stance. At the rear, the LED taillights also adopt a circular design, echoing the headlights. A small spoiler on the rear hatch and a dual exhaust layout clearly underline its performance-oriented nature.

Inside the car, the centerpiece of the dashboard design is the 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen, which dominates the visual center. The screen is circular, resonating with MINI's brand elements. The system operates smoothly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offering sufficient convenience for daily use. Regarding interior materials, the top of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by air conditioning vents and paddle shifters with a metallic texture, putting the overall quality at an above-average level in its class. The seats are made of leather, with the front seats supporting electric adjustment. They provide good support and remain comfortable for extended periods. The performance of the rear space is worth mentioning. With a wheelbase of 2567mm, a passenger 175cm tall can still enjoy about two fists worth of legroom and ample headroom when seated in the rear, fully accommodating daily family use. The trunk capacity is 275 liters and can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it easy to store a stroller or large luggage.

In terms of power, the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 150kW (204PS) and a maximum torque of 300N·m. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. During actual driving, the power response is active at start-up, and a gentle press on the accelerator provides an obvious push-back sensation. Switching to Sport mode results in a more aggressive shift logic, with faster downshifts and ample power reserves for overtaking. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 6.8 seconds, putting it in the upper range among models in its class. During everyday driving, the gearbox's shift smoothness is commendable, with almost imperceptible jolts.

Handling has always been MINI's strength, and this five-door model is no exception. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the body control during cornering is excellent, giving the driver ample confidence. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for sportiness but not overly stiff. When navigating uneven roads, the suspension filters out most small vibrations while retaining some road feel, striking a balance between handling and comfort. The braking system also performs admirably, with a linear feel on the brake pedal, uniform brake force distribution, and stable body control during emergency braking.

In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are effectively suppressed at high speeds, ensuring that conversations inside the car remain unaffected. The comfort of the seats is also commendable, with cushioning that is soft but adequately supportive for the body. Fuel consumption is average, with about 8.5L per 100 kilometers in urban conditions and about 6.8L per 100 kilometers on highways, meeting the expectations for a 2.0T engine.

Overall, the core highlights of the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S are: retaining MINI's classic design elements and outstanding handling performance, while improving space practicality through a five-door layout and longer wheelbase. Compared to similarly classed models like the BMW 1 Series or Audi A3, it has the advantage of higher design recognition and driving fun. It is also well-equipped, with features like ACC adaptive cruise control, automatic parking, and a panoramic sunroof as standard, offering excellent value for money.

This car is suitable for two types of people: first, young consumers who value driving pleasure while needing to consider family use; second, those who appreciate the MINI brand culture and want a more practical vehicle. If you're looking for a car that is both distinctive and capable of meeting daily needs, the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S is worth considering.

Pros
2.0T+7DCT power combination is strong, accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, confident in overtaking and climbing
7DCT gearbox shifts smoothly, flexible in low-speed following, convenient for maneuvering in traffic
Panoramic sunroof enhances riding experience, spacious rear space, suitable for family trips
Cons
The chassis is relatively stiff, and the bumpiness is noticeable when crossing speed bumps, affecting ride comfort.
At a high speed of 120km/h, tire noise is relatively loud, and noise control on certain road conditions is suboptimal.
The steering wheel requires manual adjustment, and the position of the rear air conditioning vent is relatively low.

As the owner of a 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S in Malaysia for three months, I truly feel that I made the right choice! Previously, I drove a Japanese family car that felt too "Zen". Switching to this 2.0T Cooper S is like changing my lifestyle entirely—during the morning traffic jam on Jalan Ampang, the 7DCT shifts as smoothly as driving an electric car, and with a light tap on the accelerator, I can weave through traffic effortlessly. The 6.8-second 0-100 km/h capability is especially exhilarating during highway overtakes, and even long drives from Kuala Lumpur to Penang don't feel sluggish. However, there's a reason why I gave the interior 4 stars: while the 9.4-inch OLED screen comes with a full-on tech vibe, the manual adjustment for the steering wheel feels a bit dated. On the upside, the electric adjustment for the front passenger seat is very convenient. Taking my family to Genting on the weekend, opening the panoramic sunroof, the 2567mm rear legroom made it comfortable for my parents. The trunk space fits two carry-on suitcases plus a picnic basket just fine. The only minor gripe is that tire noise becomes noticeable at 120 km/h on the highway, but the MINI's handling more than makes up for this small drawback—after all, on Malaysia’s winding roads, this front-wheel-drive car's precision feels even better than the Golf GTI I’ve tested!

As the owner of a 2025 MINI 5-Door Cooper S living in Malaysia for three months, I genuinely feel I made the right choice! The Japanese SUV I used to drive was practical, but it lacked a bit of excitement. The 2.0T+7DCT combination in this car responds very quickly to the accelerator during the morning rush on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, allowing for agile maneuvering—so much more enjoyable compared to the old car. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the stability around corners on mountain roads is impressive, though the rear seat can feel a bit cramped for three adults. The 9.4-inch OLED screen inside exudes a strong sense of tech, and the panoramic sunroof is super relaxing when cruising along the seaside in Penang. The safety features are also complete, with ACC cruise control making long drives on the North-South Expressway effortless. The only minor gripe is that the position of the rear AC vents is a bit low, but overall, this flaw is negligible. With both looks and performance, I absolutely love it!

Overtaking during the morning rush hour is effortless, with a 0-100 km/h speed in just 6.8 seconds giving you plenty of confidence! Even with three buddies in the back seat, it's still spacious, and the panoramic sunroof adds a refreshing touch of comfort. The only downside is occasionally struggling to find a parking spot, but with this interior quality, it's totally worth it!

Every time I go over a speed bump, it feels like riding a roller coaster! The chassis is so stiff that it feels like it could shake my breakfast back up to my throat...

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as I turned onto the winding mountain road, a heavy rain started pouring. The windshield wipers were sweeping frantically, yet visibility was still poor. Just as I was getting nervous, the lane departure warning suddenly beeped, and it turned out I had drifted onto the line while absent-minded. The 2.0T engine power is indeed strong enough for climbing hills. The 6.8-second acceleration is no exaggeration, making overtaking feel confident. However, this DCT transmission occasionally jerks at low speeds, especially during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur city, which is somewhat unpleasant. The interior is truly impressive. The 9.4-inch OLED screen has amazing clarity and feels silky smooth to the touch. With the panoramic sunroof open, the whole family felt uplifted. I'd give the safety features full marks — six airbags plus various warnings made me feel assured even in heavy rain. As for the exterior, while it is classic, it seems to lack some innovation, so I'd rate it a 4 out of 5.
