MINI 5 Door 2024 Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment market has intensified, and consumers are no longer satisfied with basic transportation functionality. They place greater emphasis on a balance between design recognition, practicality of features, and driving pleasure. The 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S, as one of the few five-door models under the brand, has garnered great attention since its launch in December last year, thanks to its 2.0T turbocharged power, five-seat layout, and MINI's iconic design language. This time, we got our hands on the actual car, and the core purpose is to verify whether it can satisfy family users' needs for space and features while retaining MINI's driving DNA, and to evaluate if its pricing at RM 293,000 is competitive.
From the exterior, the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S continues the brand's classic round headlight design, but with some detailed adjustments — the LED headlights now feature circular daytime running lights inside, which are highly recognizable when lit. The front grille has been downsized, paired with a sporty front bumper underneath, giving the overall style a retro MINI feel while adding a touch of sportiness. The side profile of the car is simple and sleek, with the five-door design making the rear doors' proportions look more balanced. The 17-inch alloy wheels (fitted on the test vehicle) further reinforce the sporty stance. At the rear, the LED taillights also adopt a circular design, echoing the headlights. A small spoiler on the rear hatch and a dual exhaust layout clearly underline its performance-oriented nature.
Inside the car, the centerpiece of the dashboard design is the 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen, which dominates the visual center. The screen is circular, resonating with MINI's brand elements. The system operates smoothly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offering sufficient convenience for daily use. Regarding interior materials, the top of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by air conditioning vents and paddle shifters with a metallic texture, putting the overall quality at an above-average level in its class. The seats are made of leather, with the front seats supporting electric adjustment. They provide good support and remain comfortable for extended periods. The performance of the rear space is worth mentioning. With a wheelbase of 2567mm, a passenger 175cm tall can still enjoy about two fists worth of legroom and ample headroom when seated in the rear, fully accommodating daily family use. The trunk capacity is 275 liters and can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it easy to store a stroller or large luggage.
In terms of power, the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 150kW (204PS) and a maximum torque of 300N·m. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. During actual driving, the power response is active at start-up, and a gentle press on the accelerator provides an obvious push-back sensation. Switching to Sport mode results in a more aggressive shift logic, with faster downshifts and ample power reserves for overtaking. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 6.8 seconds, putting it in the upper range among models in its class. During everyday driving, the gearbox's shift smoothness is commendable, with almost imperceptible jolts.
Handling has always been MINI's strength, and this five-door model is no exception. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the body control during cornering is excellent, giving the driver ample confidence. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for sportiness but not overly stiff. When navigating uneven roads, the suspension filters out most small vibrations while retaining some road feel, striking a balance between handling and comfort. The braking system also performs admirably, with a linear feel on the brake pedal, uniform brake force distribution, and stable body control during emergency braking.
In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are effectively suppressed at high speeds, ensuring that conversations inside the car remain unaffected. The comfort of the seats is also commendable, with cushioning that is soft but adequately supportive for the body. Fuel consumption is average, with about 8.5L per 100 kilometers in urban conditions and about 6.8L per 100 kilometers on highways, meeting the expectations for a 2.0T engine.
Overall, the core highlights of the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S are: retaining MINI's classic design elements and outstanding handling performance, while improving space practicality through a five-door layout and longer wheelbase. Compared to similarly classed models like the BMW 1 Series or Audi A3, it has the advantage of higher design recognition and driving fun. It is also well-equipped, with features like ACC adaptive cruise control, automatic parking, and a panoramic sunroof as standard, offering excellent value for money.
This car is suitable for two types of people: first, young consumers who value driving pleasure while needing to consider family use; second, those who appreciate the MINI brand culture and want a more practical vehicle. If you're looking for a car that is both distinctive and capable of meeting daily needs, the 2025 MINI 5 Door Cooper S is worth considering.
