Specs

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-Segment SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers with a budget under RM 100,000 not only pursue the passability and space of SUVs but also focus on fuel economy and smart configurations. As the entry-level model of the series, the 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X is priced at RM 62,500 and features six airbags, Level 2 driving assistance functions, and turbocharged power, which are rare in its class. It has become the focus of many family users. The main purpose of this test drive was to verify whether this entry-level model can meet the comprehensive needs of daily commuting and family outings beyond its cost-effectiveness.

In terms of appearance, the 2023 Ativa Turbo X retains the iconic youthful design of the series. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with horizontally blackened trim. The automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights on both sides are integrated, enhancing visual width. The body side lines are simple and smooth, with waistlines extending from the front fender to the rear, enhancing the three-dimensional sense. The 16-inch alloy wheels are of a standard design, paired with 205/65 R16 tires, balancing comfort and passability. At the rear, the blackened LED taillights echo the silver skid plate below the rear bumper. The overall design is highly recognizable in the same class and aligns with the aesthetics of young family users.

Inside the car, the interior of the Turbo X prioritizes practicality. The center console mainly uses hard plastic materials but improves visual quality through silver trim and textured detailing. The 7-inch TFT multifunction display panel has clear visuals and can switch between information such as fuel consumption and driving assistance status. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports Bluetooth connectivity, with operating fluency meeting expectations for this price range. In terms of configuration, keyless entry/start, a multifunction steering wheel, and a manually operated digital air-conditioning system with memory function are standard. The front seats support manual adjustment, and the fabric upholstery offers moderate support, ensuring comfort during long rides.

In terms of space, the Ativa Turbo X's body dimensions are 4065mm×1710mm×1635mm, with a wheelbase of 2525mm, which is within the mainstream for B-Segment SUVs. A front-row passenger with a height of 175cm has 1 fist and 2 fingers of headroom after adjusting the seat, while a rear-row passenger of the same height has 1 fist of legroom and headroom, meeting the daily travel needs of families. The trunk has a regular capacity of 303 liters, which can be expanded to a larger space by folding down the 60:40 split rear seats, accommodating a stroller or two 20-inch suitcases. The car’s interior offers plenty of storage options, with front and rear door slots for water bottles, a center armrest box, and a glove box of moderate capacity. The front row is also equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet for external device charging.

In terms of power, the Turbo X is equipped with a 1.0L three-cylinder turbocharged engine delivering a maximum power of 72 kW (98 PS) at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 140 N·m between 2400-4000 rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. During daily driving, the engine begins delivering maximum torque after 2400 rpm, with light starts and responsive mid-range acceleration. When overtaking, stepping hard on the accelerator prompts the CVT to simulate shifting, providing linear power output with no significant lag. At highway speeds, the engine runs at around 2000 rpm at 100 km/h and increases to 2500 rpm when cruising at 120 km/h. Noise levels are acceptable, with wind and road noise at tolerable levels. The official combined fuel consumption is 5.3L/100km, while actual test drives showed about 6.2L/100km in urban roads and approximately 4.8L/100km on highways, meeting expectations for fuel economy performance.

In terms of handling and chassis, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear double-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort within the same class. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters out most of the jolts, ensuring that rear passengers do not experience significant bumps. Body roll is kept within a reasonable range when cornering, and the steering wheel has moderate weight and precise directional control, making it suitable for daily family driving. With a minimum ground clearance of 200mm, it handles rural dirt roads or light unpaved roads without difficulty, meeting occasional suburban travel needs.

Safety features are a highlight of the Turbo X, which comes standard with six airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and active braking. During the test drive, the lane departure warning system provided timely alerts when changing lanes without signaling, while the forward collision warning system was sensitive in recognizing stationary vehicles and pedestrians, effectively reducing accident risks. The rear parking sensors and reverse camera are of decent clarity, making parking easier for beginners.

Overall, at a price of RM 62,500, the 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X achieves a balance of performance, space, and safety features. Compared to competitors in the same class, its Level 2 driving assistance and six airbags are key advantages, and its fuel efficiency can meet the daily needs of family users. However, details like the use of hard plastic materials for the interior and seats that only support manual adjustment are common compromises for entry-level models.

This vehicle is suitable for family users who value cost-effectiveness and safety features, especially those primarily focused on daily commuting and occasionally traveling with family members. It has no particularly significant shortcomings, and its overall performance can meet family usage scenarios. It is a practical choice worth considering in the sub-RM 100,000 SUV market.

Pros
Safe configuration is practical, the stability control system intervenes promptly, and functions like automatic braking and lane departure warning enhance the sense of driving safety
Highly recognizable exterior design, spirited LED headlights, muscular body lines match young people's aesthetics, and some color options have excellent texture
Interior configuration exceeds expectations, the central control screen is responsive, the digital instrument panel is clear, and the rear air conditioning vents are considerate
Cons
Lack of 360-degree panoramic images, making parking difficult for beginners; rear parking image resolution is average, and nighttime reversing clarity is insufficient
Rear bumper has a noticeable plastic texture, the paint is relatively thin and easily chipped by small stones
The interior seats are made of fabric material, the rear bumper is not equipped with a small surround, slightly lacking a sporty feel

Owner of 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X
As the owner of a 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X, after driving for more than half a year in Malaysia, I am quite satisfied with its safety features and appearance. Speaking of safety, I would rate it 4 out of 5 because it gives me great peace of mind during daily commutes. In Malaysia's rainy season, sudden heavy downpours are common, and when the roads are slippery on highways, the vehicle stability control engages promptly, preventing it from feeling floaty. Last time, I was forced into a tight spot on the LDP highway by a car suddenly cutting lanes; the lane departure warning beeped, and the autonomous emergency braking lightly tapped to help me stabilize the car. With 6 airbags and front and rear parking sensors, these features are quite practical for this price range in the B-segment. The only minor downside is the lack of a 360-degree camera, which might require new drivers to adjust a few times when parking in tight mall spaces. As for appearance, the design of the Ativa stands out on local roads—its LED headlights are quite striking during the day, and the car’s body lines have a bit of a rugged, small-SUV vibe, unlike some other cars in the same class that look too much like "grocery-getters." I chose the metallic gray, and once cleaned, it looks quite premium under sunlight. A neighbor in my community even asked if it was a more expensive car. However, the plastic feel of the rear bumper is slightly noticeable; if it had a small body kit, it would look sportier. Overall, it still aligns well with the aesthetics of younger drivers. All in all, with such safety features and styling at this price point, it's definitely sufficient for daily driving in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly six months, I would give both the exterior and safety aspects a solid 4 out of 5. They fall into the category of "comfortable to use with no issues, but just short of being stunning." Speaking of the exterior, the design of the Ativa stands out quite well among local B-segment cars. The large front grille paired with LED headlights gives it noticeable recognition amidst Kuala Lumpur's traffic during the daytime. The side profile features a character line running from the front to the tail lights, and with the 17-inch wheels, it doesn’t seem too much like a "grocery-getter" when parked in my apartment complex (surrounded by older models of the Myvi and Alza). However, the downside would be the slightly thin paint. I got hit by a small stone on the LDP highway once, leaving a tiny chip that revealed the undercoat, which is something to watch out for. Overall, it’s "pleasant to look at" but not to the point where pedestrians would turn their heads, so 4 out of 5 feels fair. When it comes to safety, I genuinely feel reassured. With Malaysia’s frequent rainy weather, I encountered a sudden downpour on the coastal highway in Penang last month. The road surface became slippery, and the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) kicked in right away, stabilizing the steering instantly and preventing me from skidding out — I can’t imagine how things would have gone in an older car. Another time in the Klang Valley, the car ahead suddenly braked hard during a traffic jam. Before I could react, the advanced braking system issued two quick beeps and stopped me just half a meter away from the car ahead! With 6 airbags and standard features like Lane Departure Warning, I feel confident whether driving on highways or taking my family to Genting. However, there’s a small regret: the resolution of the rear parking camera isn’t great. When reversing in unlit parking lots at night, I have to get quite close to the screen to see clearly. If this could be upgraded to HD, it would be perfect. Overall, these two aspects haven’t let me down, and the car is more than sufficient as a family vehicle. A well-deserved 4 out of 5!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Ativa Ativa 1.0L TURBO AV (2-Tone special Metallic Black Roof)
As the owner of a 2023 Perodua Ativa 1.0L TURBO AV two-tone model, after driving it for three months, I really love it more and more! Starting with the exterior, the metallic black roof paired with the contrasting body color design is exactly my style—among so many cars on the roads of Kuala Lumpur, every time I park at Pavilion Mall, I can recognize my car from afar. The car's lines are very sleek, unlike some compact SUVs that look bulky. The 200mm ground clearance ensures I don't have to worry about scraping the underside when driving on bumpy sections of the East Coast Highway. It's both practical and stylish. The interior is even more surprising. Sitting inside, it doesn't feel like a car that costs just over 70,000 MYR! The 9-inch touchscreen is very responsive, and connecting to Apple CarPlay makes navigation to Genting Highlands super convenient. The digital instrument cluster is clear, with fuel levels and RPM easily readable at a glance. The most thoughtful feature is the rear air-conditioning vents; when I drove my family to Penang for a road trip, my parents in the back said it wasn’t stuffy like in our previous car after sitting for long periods. Although the seats are fabric, they have good support. Last week, I drove colleagues to Port Klang for a business meeting, and after over an hour of driving, they all said the seats were comfortable. The storage space is sufficient too, with the compartment under the center console just right for holding my wallet and phone. The attention to detail is impressive, completely exceeding expectations!
