Specs

As the demand for new energy models continues to grow in Malaysia's luxury SUV market, the all-new Cayenne S E-Hybrid, launched by Porsche in January 2025, has rapidly become the focal point of the D-class plug-in hybrid SUV segment. This car, featuring a 3.0T V6 plug-in hybrid system with a combined 520PS output, 90 kilometers of pure-electric range, and a more consumer-friendly price (RM 728,000), breaks the previous barrier of high pricing for plug-in hybrid Cayenne models. The main goal of this test drive is to verify whether it strikes a balance among performance, range practicality, and luxury, making it an acceptable choice for both families and performance enthusiasts.

In terms of appearance, the 2025 Cayenne S E-Hybrid retains the family-style design but incorporates unique details exclusive to plug-in hybrid models. The matrix LED headlights have sharper internal structures, and the size of the air intake grille below has been slightly adjusted. Together with the engine hood's muscular lines, the sporty feel of Porsche's SUV lineage is preserved. The side profile of the car is sleek, with 20-inch two-tone wheels paired with 275/45 R20 front tires and 305/40 R20 rear tires, creating a visually balanced proportion. The "e-hybrid" badge on the fender and the charging port on the left front fender directly identify its plug-in hybrid status. The rear features a striking full-width LED taillight, and the diffuser design below the rear bumper is simpler than the regular gasoline version, offering a clear identity that balances the gravitas of a luxury SUV with its sporty genes.

Sitting inside, the familiar Porsche layout greets you, but there are noticeable upgrades in materials and configuration. The 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster provides rich information and can be switched to a hybrid mode-specific interface to view real-time battery levels and energy flow. The 12.3-inch central touchscreen responds quickly, supports CarPlay connectivity, and has an intuitive operating logic. The interior primarily uses genuine leather and soft-touch materials, with the front seats equipped with electric adjustment and offering good support. Although the rear seats are manually adjustable, they are spacious. Passengers with a height of 175cm still have about two fists' worth of legroom. In terms of storage space, the center console and door storage compartments are practical, and the trunk offers 404 liters of space under normal conditions, sufficient for daily shopping or short trips. The rear seatbacks can be folded down to expand the space further. Four-zone automatic climate control comes standard, and rear passengers are catered to with independent air vents and power outlets.

Dynamic performance is the core highlight of this car. The plug-in hybrid system, consisting of a 3.0T V6 engine and a rear-mounted single electric motor, delivers a combined output of 520PS and 750N·m of torque. It is paired with an 8AT transmission and all-wheel drive. In pure electric mode, the official range of 90 kilometers is practical for city commutes. In our test, it covered 82 kilometers in congested traffic, achieving a range completion rate of nearly 90%. Switching to hybrid mode, the car is primarily powered by the electric motor during start-up and at low speeds, offering quick and quiet response. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the engine smoothly engages with almost no abruptness. During acceleration tests, it goes from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, with sufficient power reserves for overtaking at mid-speed and stable performance during high-speed cruising. The steering is precise, with minimal play, meeting Porsche's handling standards. The front and rear multi-link independent suspension offers strong support, effectively controlling body roll during cornering, while filtering out most minor vibrations on bumpy roads, balancing sportiness and comfort. In terms of energy consumption, the pure electric mode consumes about 28kWh/100km, while the hybrid mode achieves a combined fuel consumption as low as 6.2L/100km, almost halving the figures compared to the 2023 gasoline version of the Cayenne E3 (official combined fuel consumption of 10.8L).

The noise control performs excellently, and external noise is almost inaudible in pure electric mode. At high-speed cruising, wind noise and tire noise are also kept within a reasonable range. The energy recovery system is adjustable in three levels; the highest level provides a significant deceleration feel, enabling one-pedal driving, while the lowest level is close to the gliding experience of a fuel vehicle, making it easy to adapt. The wrapping and supportiveness of the seats perform well during long drives, and even after sitting for two consecutive hours, you won’t feel fatigued.

Overall, the main advantages of the 2025 Cayenne S E-Hybrid are quite prominent: it is over RM 120,000 more expensive than the 2023 gasoline version of the Cayenne E3 (RM 599,999), but it adds a plug-in hybrid system, four-zone air conditioning, and rear-side airbags, while also offering stronger performance and lower fuel consumption. Compared to the 2019 Cayenne S (RM 940,000), it is RM 210,000 cheaper, with comparable performance (0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds vs. 5.2 seconds for the latter), and additionally provides pure electric driving range. It is suitable for two groups of people: first, families who value environmental protection and daily cost-efficiency, with the pure electric range covering most commuting needs while the hybrid mode can handle long-distance trips; second, young individuals who pursue performance but want to avoid the high price of the Turbo version. With 520PS of power, it is sufficient to provide driving enjoyment.

Overall, the 2025 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid is a well-balanced luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. It embodies Porsche's performance DNA while integrating the practicality of hybrid vehicles, and its price is more favorable compared to the older hybrid version. If you are looking for a luxury SUV that can balance daily commuting, family trips, and occasional adventures, it will be a good choice.

Owner of 2023 Porsche Cayenne E3
Previously, I always felt that the interior of the X5 was a bit lacking. Switching to the Cayenne E3 completely won me over with its 5-star interior — the Bose sound system is absolutely immersive while listening to Malaysian songs during heavy rain in Malaysia. During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic, the 14-way seat adjustment ensures the most comfortable angle, and the knee airbag and lane-keeping assist add to the sense of security. However, safety only gets 4 stars because it lacks automatic parking (not beginner-friendly). On weekends, driving up Genting Highlands, the 3.0T turbo's 500Nm torque responds instantly, and the four-wheel drive has excellent grip. The only downside is the 10.8 fuel consumption in the city, which hurts a bit. However, with the rear seats folding down in a 40:20:40 split, it can fit the whole family's camping gear — totally worth it!

Previously, I drove a regular fuel SUV, but after switching to the 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid, I finally don’t feel stressed during the morning rush in Kuala Lumpur – the pure electric mode is quiet and fuel-efficient, and it glides on electricity during traffic jams, while the engine transitions smoothly when it kicks in. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 3.0T engine combined with the electric motor delivering 462 horsepower handles uphill climbs steadily, and overtaking is effortless. Giving it 4 points for performance feels fair. The interior definitely deserves 5 points, with full leather and metal trims exuding top-tier quality, and the central touchscreen is user-friendly to operate. A minor drawback is the limited battery capacity, leading to short pure electric range, so for long trips, it still relies on fuel. However, overall in Malaysia, it strikes a great balance between luxury and practicality, and I’m very satisfied.

Previously, I was driving a Japanese SUV, but it always felt a bit lacking in "power." After switching to the Cayenne E3, during the morning rush hour crawl on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 3.0T turbo intervention is very smooth, the steering wheel is so precise it feels like it's part of my hand, and lane changing and overtaking are effortless. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 500N·m torque kicks in instantly when climbing, and the four-wheel drive is so stable it feels like being glued to the road. My wife said it has much less shaking compared to the previous car. The interior's 12.6-inch curved screen is full of a sense of technology, and listening to local Malaysian songs on the Bose sound system at high speed is super enjoyable. The only minor downside is that the rear middle floor hump is a bit high, so the person in the middle of the back row has to compromise a bit when seating three people. However, overall, the 590,000 MYR spent is worthwhile, as the luxury and handling did not disappoint.

Last week, I took my family to Genting. Amidst the torrential rain, the mountain roads were steep and winding, yet the car remained as stable as if it was glued to the road. The active braking system even helped me avoid a truck that suddenly changed lanes—safety-wise, it's absolutely impeccable. When parked at the observation deck, the fastback silhouette combined with the mist made passersby turn their heads. Back inside the car, the leather seats wrapped comfortably around my waist, and songs played through the Burmester sound system. Even my wife in the passenger seat praised the smooth touch of the interior. This 940,000 MYR was well spent.

Owner of 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid
Previously, I drove the older model of the Cayenne S and thought the power was sufficient, until I tried this Turbo S E-Hybrid—with 680 horsepower from the 4.0T engine combined with an electric motor, it's absolutely insane! During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, it silently followed traffic in pure electric mode, and even with the air conditioning on full blast, it was steady without any vibrations. The owner of the Mercedes GLE next to me was sneaking glances. Over the weekend, I drove it on the North-South Highway to Penang; in Sport Plus mode, a press of the accelerator overtakes trucks, and the car feels as stable as if glued to the ground. There's nothing to complain about in terms of safety—the automatic emergency braking saved me once in the outskirts of Melaka. A small gripe is that the battery takes up space in the trunk, leaving one less storage compartment compared to the standard version, but I'm willing to overlook that for the performance!
