When Malaysian families choose a 7-seater MPV, they often prioritize practicality in terms of space, rich configurations, and cost-effectiveness. The 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT, as the top model of the brand's C-Segment lineup, featuring a 140PS turbocharged engine, superior wheelbase performance, and convenient configurations like keyless entry, has become a popular choice at its price range. In this test drive, we focused on evaluating its actual driving and riding performance, whether its configurations meet daily family needs, as well as the balance between power and fuel consumption.

In terms of exterior design, the 2019 Exora Premium continues Proton's family-style design language, with an overall sturdy and stable outline. The front features a large intake grille, adorned with chrome trim, while the LED daytime running lights blend with the halogen main lamps on either side, offering high recognition. The body side lines are smooth, and the 16-inch wheels are of standard design. The anti-scratch panels on the lower part of the doors add to the layered detailing. At the rear, the LED taillight set adopts a horizontal layout, connected by chrome trim, visually broadening the rear; the rear bumper design is simple, complemented with rear fog lights and reversing radar sensors, ensuring high practicality. The overall exterior does not incorporate overly flashy designs, aligning with the positioning of a family MPV.

Inside, the interior adopts a dark theme, with the center console angled toward the driver's seat for easier operation. The upper part of the dashboard features hard plastic materials, but the texture is refined, avoiding a cheap feel. The 7-inch touchscreen on the center console is a highlight of the Premium version, supporting the Sound Plus function. The interface response is smooth, and daily navigation and multimedia operations are sufficiently efficient. The multifunctional steering wheel integrates basic control buttons, paired with an LCD segmented instrument panel that clearly displays information such as speed, RPM, and fuel consumption. In terms of configurations, Keyless Operation, a rearview camera, and electrically folding side mirrors are standard. Compared to the Executive version at the same price point, the Premium version adds a rearview camera, significantly improving convenience during parking for a 7-seater vehicle. The inclusion of a 220V/230V power socket allows rear passengers to charge their electronic devices conveniently, and rear sunshades enhance passenger comfort.

Spaciousness is one of Exora's core advantages. With a length of 4610mm and a wheelbase of 2730mm, it provides a solid foundation for a 7-seater layout. The front seats offer manual adjustments, and the seating space is generous, with a passenger of 175cm having more than a fist’s space for both head and legroom. The second row adopts a 60:40 split design, and the seats can slide back and forth, offering up to two fists of legroom at maximum. The floor is almost flat, ensuring no crowding even with three passengers sitting together. The third-row seats are more suitable for children or adults under 165cm in height, suitable for short trips but a bit cramped for long journeys. The trunk’s standard capacity is 132L, which expands significantly when the third row is folded down, meeting the storage needs for family travels. Rear air conditioning vents come as standard, allowing fast adjustment of the rear cabin temperature and enhancing the overall ride experience.

In terms of power, the 1.6T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 140PS, with peak torque unleashed at 2000rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. The power response is brisk at start-up, making it effortless for city driving or overtaking. When switched to Eco mode, the power output becomes smoother, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, acceleration feels more direct, but the CVT's nature still lacks a pronounced push-back effect during sudden acceleration. At highway speeds, the engine maintains a rotation speed of about 2500rpm at 120km/h, with engine noise well-controlled, ensuring it doesn't disrupt conversations inside the cabin. In fuel consumption tests, actual fuel consumption was approximately 11L/100km under congested urban road conditions, dropping to around 8.5L/100km on highways, with an overall consumption close to the official figure of 9.78L/100km. For a 1.465kg 7-seater vehicle, this performance is considered middle-level among its peers.

The handling and chassis performance are tuned towards comfort, with the front MacPherson independent suspension effectively filtering small road bumps. Vibrations when passing speed bumps are softly managed, ensuring rear passengers don't feel obvious jolts. The steering wheel has a moderate weight with minimal free play, making it easy for daily driving. Body roll in corners is controlled within reasonable limits, avoiding the "big boat" feel typical of MPVs. The braking system adopts ventilated discs at the front and rear, with linear braking response. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without noticeable veering. In terms of noise control, tire noise becomes slightly noticeable at high speeds, but engine and wind noise suppression are excellent. Overall quietness meets family car standards.

Compared to the similarly priced Executive variant, the Premium version adds a 7-inch touchscreen and a reversing camera, which are more practical for family users. Although it costs RM7000 more, the upgraded features directly address daily usage pain points. Compared to other MPVs in the same category, the Exora's wheelbase is significantly advantageous, offering superior space. The 5-year/150,000km warranty policy also provides additional peace of mind for users.

Overall, the 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT's core strengths lie in its spacious interior, abundant practical features, and balanced power and fuel consumption performance. It is suitable for families prioritizing travel, requiring a 7-seater layout, and desiring convenient configurations. It is particularly beneficial for families frequently traveling with elderly and children, as the rear space, power outlets, sunshades, and other features cater well to their needs. If on a tighter budget, the Executive version can meet basic requirements, but the reversing camera and infotainment screen on the Premium version make it a better choice. All in all, the Exora Premium is a cost-effective family MPV that balances daily commuting and family travel needs excellently.

Pros
The power performance is excellent, the 1.6T engine is agile on congested roads, and climbing hills is smooth with no lack of power
Space usability is strong, the 7-seater layout is family-friendly, the third row is not cramped, and folding it down provides a large trunk capacity
Safety features are practical, ABS and reversing radar perform reliably on slippery roads and in narrow alley parking
Cons
The number of airbags is small, only two; the owner hopes to add more airbags to enhance the sense of safety.
The interior has a strong plastic feel, with some panels being relatively hard and lacking soft materials for wrapping.
When fully loaded, the power is slightly weak when climbing, especially when carrying multiple passengers and luggage.

Owner of 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Executive CVT
As an owner of the 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Executive CVT, having used it in Malaysia for almost four years, I genuinely feel this car is perfect for local families! In terms of performance, I give it full marks. The 1.6T engine is particularly agile during rush hour traffic in KL (Kuala Lumpur); the throttle response is fast at start-up, and it doesn’t feel sluggish. On weekends when I take the family to Genting Highlands, the CVT gearbox is also very smooth on uphill climbs, with no issues of power insufficiency. Although the interior is not a luxury design, the details are very thoughtful—there is an independent air-conditioning vent for the second row, so the kids in the back won’t complain about feeling hot even after sitting for long periods. The 7-seater layout is just right for my family of five. When occasionally accommodating elderly passengers in the third row, it doesn’t feel cramped. After folding the third row, the trunk can fit a baby stroller and two suitcases. Even during a trip to Sabah, it was manageable to carry souvenirs for friends—this level of practicality absolutely deserves 5 stars! The exterior design was one of the reasons I chose it. Proton’s signature family-style front face has high recognizability on local roads. The LED headlights are especially bright when driving at night on the highway. The body lines are not bulky, and neighbors in the community often compliment its good looks. Full marks without hesitation. In terms of safety, I deducted one point, mainly because it only comes with two airbags. Although ABS and reverse radar are standard features, having a few more airbags would make it feel more reassuring—nevertheless, it’s quite stable for daily city driving. The braking response is also sensitive, so overall, I’m still relatively satisfied. To sum up, being able to purchase such a 7-seater car at a price of less than 60,000 MYR is truly friendly for ordinary families!

Owner of 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT
As the owner of the 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT, having driven it in Malaysia for almost four years, what I appreciate most is its safety performance, which definitely deserves a 5-star rating! During the rainy season in Malaysia, I often encounter slippery roads, and on highways, there are occasionally motorcycles that suddenly change lanes. The Exora's vehicle stability control and ABS have always been reliable — last time on the North-South Expressway during a heavy downpour, the car in front of me braked suddenly, and when I braked to stop, the brakes didn't skid, and the car body remained stable. At that time, my whole family was on board, and I truly felt a great sense of security. When I take my kids to school, the reverse radar and rear camera are particularly useful in the narrow alleys of KL, helping me avoid pedestrians who suddenly appear. This feature is extremely important for an MPV. As for the exterior, I would give it a 4-star rating. Overall, it has a steady and practical family-oriented design. The LED daytime running lights stand out quite well in Penang's early morning fog, but the design of the front is fairly standard and not particularly striking. However, for a family MPV, this look is decent enough. When parked in the neighborhood, it doesn’t stand out too much among other cars, but it does look refined. When taking my family on a road trip to Ipoh, a friend even said it looks more premium than its actual price tag!

Owner of 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT
As a Malaysian car owner, I've been driving the 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT for nearly four years, and I truly feel this car is perfect for local family use! Giving the exterior a perfect score of 5 out of 5 isn't an exaggeration—the streamlined body really stands out in KL traffic, and the LED daytime running lights are highly recognizable when lit during the day. Every time I park near an LRT station, people always take a second glance. Performance gets a score of 4 because when I’m carrying my family (occasionally a full load of 7 people) on the North-South Highway, the 1.6T turbo produces torque as early as 2000 rpm, making overtaking smooth and responsive; but when faced with long and steep slopes, like those in Genting Highlands, a full load with luggage makes the car feel slightly underpowered. After all, it's an MPV, so I’m already satisfied with its performance. Safety definitely deserves a 5! Last time on the Penang Bridge, I encountered a sudden braking situation, and the ABS and electronic stability control responded extremely quickly, coming to a steady stop without skidding. The rear radar and reverse camera are extremely practical when parking in the narrow alleys of KL Chinatown, so there's no worry about scraping against roadside motorbikes. Overall, for its price range, this performance is very friendly to Malaysian families like ours!

Owner of 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT
As the owner of the 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT, I have been driving it in Malaysia for almost four years. I give it a score of 4 for both exterior and interior design. Overall, I'm quite satisfied! In terms of exterior design, the Exora's look is quite appealing among MPVs—the chrome trim on the front grille and the LED daytime running lights make it look refreshing. When driving around Klang Valley and getting stuck in traffic, I occasionally get glances from passersby. The body lines are smooth, and the 16-inch rims give it the presence of a Class C vehicle. However, if the rims were replaced with a sportier design, it would be even better. After all, many new cars on the road now come with larger rims, so this is a minor regret. As for the interior, the 7-seater layout is incredibly practical for families like ours, who often go on road trips to Genting Highlands or Penang! The second row's 60:40 folding design and the third row's 50:50 folding design make it easy to carry large luggage occasionally. The 7-inch touchscreen on the central console responds quite well, and it’s very convenient to connect my phone to listen to local Malaysian radio stations. The rear air conditioning is also effective. In Malaysia’s hot weather, family members in the back won’t complain about the heat. However, the plastic feel of the interior is a bit heavy, especially the panel in front of the passenger seat. If they added more soft-touch materials, it would significantly enhance the quality. All in all, at this price point, the performance is quite impressive. After all, Proton is a local brand, and it’s convenient for maintenance and servicing, making it extremely cost-effective!

Owner of 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT
As a car owner who has lived in Kuala Lumpur for nearly ten years, this 2019 Proton Exora 1.6 Premium CVT really hasn't disappointed me! Let’s talk about performance first. The 1.6T power is more than sufficient for city driving. During the morning school run on the congested LDP highway, the low-speed follow is very smooth; for weekend family trips to Genting Highlands, the uphill climbs with the accelerator fully pressed even offer a bit of a push-back feeling, not at all like a bulky 7-seater vehicle. In terms of fuel consumption, it’s around 10L in the city and can be reduced to about 8L on the highway. Considering the size of the car, I find this quite satisfactory. As for the interior, although it’s not a luxury brand, the workmanship is very solid. The 7-inch touchscreen on the center console is very responsive, and the Bluetooth connection is very stable. The most practical feature is the rear air conditioning. With Malaysia’s hot weather, the elderly and children in the back no longer complain about the heat. While the third-row seats don’t provide a lot of space, they’re perfectly fine for two kids, and they can be split 50:50 and folded down, which makes it convenient for carrying larger items occasionally. The safety features are, in my opinion, quite adequate, with ABS and the vehicle stability system both coming as standard. There was one time on the Federal Highway during rainy weather when the car in front suddenly braked sharply—I also had to slam on the brakes, and the car came to a steady stop without skidding at all. The reverse sensors and the rearview camera are also very practical, especially considering the small parking spaces in Kuala Lumpur. These assistive features make parking much easier. Overall, the performance of this car on Malaysia’s roads is truly excellent, effortlessly handling both daily commutes and family outings. As a loyal Proton user, I think this car completely lives up to its price!
