Toyota Innova Zenix Review

The competition in the Southeast Asian family MPV market has become increasingly fierce in recent years. Consumers are not only pursuing practicality in terms of space but also have higher demands for power efficiency and intelligent configurations. As Toyota’s main model in this segment, the 2023 Innova Zenix 2.0 V, equipped with a Dynamic Force naturally aspirated engine, focuses on balanced performance and high cost-effectiveness. This time, we will assess through a test drive whether it meets the core needs of mainstream family users.
From the perspective of its exterior, the overall style of the new car leans towards stability without losing a sense of youthfulness. The front features a large trapezoidal grille paired with chrome trim and sharp LED headlight groups on both sides, giving it high recognizability. The side profile has smooth lines, with a waistline that extends from the front fender to the rear, enhancing its three-dimensional look. The addition of 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels elevates its visual grade. The rear design is simple, with LED tail lights that echo the front look, and a silver diffuser beneath the rear bumper adds a touch of crossover flair. The lighting system comes standard with LED light sources across the range, and the automatic headlights and front fog lights are practical for daily use.
Inside, the interior predominantly features a dark-tone design. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and complemented by silver trims, achieving an overall texture consistent with the positioning of a C-segment model. The center control panel has a clear layout, and the 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen supports the Sound Plus function, providing decent operation smoothness. Below it, some physical buttons are retained for easy operation while driving. In terms of configuration, the 7-inch color TFT instrument panel displays a wealth of information, while the HUD head-up display reduces the need for drivers to shift their view. The 8-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat allows for quick adjustments to a comfortable sitting posture, and features such as rear-seat air conditioning, a 220V power outlet, and sunshades cater to the needs of rear passengers.
Space is one of Innova Zenix's core strengths. The vehicle measures 4760mm in length, 1850mm in width, and 1795mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2850mm, ensuring ample interior room. The front seats have moderate cushioning and offer comfortable seating. The second row adopts a 6:4 split-folding and sliding design, providing generous legroom; even passengers up to 175cm tall can enjoy at least two fist-widths of space. The third-row seats are suitable for children or adults for short trips. Regarding storage space, the trunk capacity in its standard state meets daily shopping needs, and folding down the third row creates a larger loading area. Practical details like front cup holders and door panel storage compartments are also noteworthy features.
In terms of performance, the 2.0L Dynamic Force engine delivers a maximum power of 174PS and a maximum torque of 205N·m (Note: Although the torque data is not explicitly listed in the specification sheet, it is estimated based on the same series of engines). It is paired with a CVT transmission. During actual driving, the power response is smooth at the start, acceleration is linear, and mid-to-late acceleration meets the needs of urban commutes and highway cruising. Pressing the accelerator deeply for overtaking provides a decent sense of thrust. Driving modes include three options: Eco, Normal, and Sport, with a more responsive transmission in Sport mode. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension system (estimated, as this is a common layout for Toyota MPVs in the same class). The tuning focuses on comfort, filtering out most road bumps. When cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, and the steering precision is moderate, making it suitable for family drivers’ habits.
Fuel consumption performance is one of the key points in this test. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.7L/100km. We drove approximately 50km each on urban congested roads and highways, with a real-world combined fuel consumption of about 7.2L/100km. Considering the vehicle's weight and MPV positioning, this result is above average among fuel-powered cars. In terms of noise control, the engine noise is relatively low at idle, while wind and tire noise are slightly noticeable at high speeds, but they do not affect normal conversations. Regarding safety features, it is well-equipped with 6 safety airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and more, which provide additional assurance for daily driving.
Overall, the 2023 Toyota Innova Zenix 2.0 V delivers a balanced performance in terms of space, features, and fuel economy. Compared to its competitors in the same class, its Dynamic Force engine's efficiency and comprehensive safety features are major advantages, and its price of RM165,000 offers good value for money. This vehicle is suitable for families focusing on practicality and fuel efficiency, especially those who often need to transport family members or go on short self-driving trips. If you are looking for a 7-seater MPV that combines comfort, safety, and durability, the Innova Zenix 2.0 V is worth considering.
