Specs

In the A-Segment market of Malaysia, small SUVs have always been a popular choice for users pursuing flexibility and practicality. The 2023 Suzuki Jimny, as a veteran player in this niche market, continues to attract attention with its rugged design and balanced performance. This time, we got a test drive car with the main goal of evaluating its actual performance in daily commuting and short weekend trips to see if this car can still maintain its previous reputation.

From the exterior, the 2023 Jimny continues its classic boxy design with a tough overall style and high recognition. The front features round LED headlights paired with a five-slot air intake grille, combined with square front fog lamps on both sides, presenting a natural fusion of retro feel and off-road character. The side profile features straight lines, black fender trims, and 195/80 R15 tires, further enhancing the rugged style. The rear adopts an externally mounted spare tire design, coupled with vertical halogen taillights, making the overall appearance simple and in line with its positioning.

Inside, the interior focuses on practicality, with a straightforward and clear dashboard layout. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen is centrally positioned and supports the Sound Plus function. Although it only has two speakers, it is sufficient for everyday music needs. The materials are primarily hard plastics, which align with the A-Segment positioning, but the addition of a multifunction steering wheel enhances operational convenience. The front row is equipped with single-zone automatic air conditioning, and the adjustment buttons are physical, making them convenient for blind operation. The seats are manually adjustable, with adequate support in the front row. The rear seats support a 50:50 split-folding configuration, allowing the trunk capacity to expand from 85L to a larger space, meeting temporary cargo-carrying needs.

In terms of space, the body dimensions of the 2023 Jimny are 3480×1645×1720mm, with a wheelbase of 2250mm. The front seating space is adequate for passengers with a height of 175cm, leaving a one-fist headroom. The rear seating space is relatively tight, with only two fingers of legroom for passengers of the same height, making it more suitable for short trips or children. For storage, there is a center cupholder and door storage slots in the front row, while the rear door panels also have small storage pockets, adequately meeting daily needs.

In terms of power, this model is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 101.4PS and a maximum torque of 130N·m, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive system. The power response at start-up is smooth, making it suitable for low-speed city driving; when accelerating beyond 60km/h, power delivery is gradual, and overtaking requires a firm press on the accelerator to achieve a noticeable push-back feeling. The steering wheel feels light, making daily handling agile and suitable for maneuvering through narrow roads or parking lots. The suspension system adopts a 3-link rigid axle with coil springs at the front and rear, offering average road bump absorption. When passing over speed bumps or potholes, vibrations are more directly transmitted to the cabin, but body roll control during corners is acceptable, with decent stability.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.8L/100km. In our actual testing, city driving fuel consumption was about 7.5L/100km, while highway driving consumption was about 6.2L/100km, meeting expectations. Braking performance is stable, the brake pedal feedback is linear, and the body posture remains controllable during emergency braking. As for noise control, wind and tire noise become significantly noticeable after exceeding 80km/h, but noise levels are acceptable when driving in the city at low speeds. Seat comfort is average, with prolonged seating causing waist fatigue; however, it poses no significant issues for short trips.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Suzuki Jimny lie in its rugged exterior design, agile handling, and relatively balanced practicality. Compared to other A-segment SUVs, its off-road styling is more distinctive. However, the rear-seat space and suspension comfort are its shortcomings. This car is more suitable for young users or small families who value unique looks, primarily commute in urban areas, and occasionally go on short trips. If you prioritize spaciousness and comfort, it may not be the best choice, but if you like a compact and agile car with a rugged character, the 2023 Jimny is worth considering.

Pros
High ground clearance (210mm), easily handles potholes, dirt roads, and rainforest trails, with strong adaptability to various terrains
Flexible for city commuting, convenient for maneuvering through narrow alleys and grabbing parking spots, 1.5L power is sufficient and fuel-efficient (6.8L per 100km)
Refined interior, 7-inch touchscreen + keyless entry, soft materials feel great, standout configuration in the A-segment
Cons
The rear space is narrow, and it feels cramped when seated for a long time or fully loaded (2 adults), with insufficient comfort.
1.5L naturally aspirated engine requires acceleration in advance when overtaking trucks on the highway, showing slightly inadequate power reserves.
The trunk capacity is small, and it is full with just two carry-on suitcases, with limited storage capability.

As a 2023 Jimny owner, driving it in Malaysia feels just right! Previously, my small hatchback would always scrape its undercarriage on the rural dirt roads of the East Coast, but after switching to the Jimny, its 210mm ground clearance easily conquers potholes. It's also very stable on the rainforest trails at the foothills of Genting during weekends. I'd rate safety and performance a solid 4 out of 5: the ABS and vehicle stability control once saved me on the slippery roads during KL's morning rush hour, but the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine does need some throttle prep to overtake trucks on the highway. I give the interior a full score—7-inch touchscreen + keyless entry are quite refined for the A-segment, and folding down the 50:50 split rear seats can even fit a surfboard. A small drawback is that the rear seats get a bit cramped during long rides, but since it's usually just my wife and me, it's more than enough! At RM158k, in a multi-terrain country like Malaysia, the Jimny truly is a treasure car that balances daily use and fun.

Drove the Jimny for three months, and it's even easier to maneuver through narrow alleys and find parking spots in the city than my friend's sedan! The 1.5L engine is just right for commuting, the air conditioning is cold enough and fuel-efficient. However, it's a bit cramped for two adults in the backseat. But on weekends, taking the kid to the outskirts is great – the high chassis handles bumpy roads very steadily, offering a full sense of security.

This car's interior design is so appealing to me! The soft padding feels absolutely amazing to the touch, driving every day feels like stroking a kitten's belly~

Driving the Jimny for commuting every day is so enjoyable! It easily squeezes through narrow alleys and snatches parking spots with ease, and the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine handles overtaking without hesitation. However, the rear seats can feel a bit cramped when fully loaded, and the trunk gets full with just two carry-on suitcases. But with a 3-year warranty and 210mm ground clearance, it's super reassuring to wade through water during the rainy season.

Every day, I commute in my little Jimny. Maneuvering through narrow alleys and competing for roadside parking spots—never lost! A 1.5L gas guzzler? No, just 6.8 liters per 100km in the city, super efficient. However, it does get cramped with two friends in the back seat, and the trunk fills up with just a carry-on suitcase. But the safety features are fully equipped, making it feel reassuring to drive!
