Suzuki Jimny 2023 Review

In the A-Segment market of Malaysia, small SUVs have always been a popular choice for users pursuing flexibility and practicality. The 2023 Suzuki Jimny, as a veteran player in this niche market, continues to attract attention with its rugged design and balanced performance. This time, we got a test drive car with the main goal of evaluating its actual performance in daily commuting and short weekend trips to see if this car can still maintain its previous reputation.
From the exterior, the 2023 Jimny continues its classic boxy design with a tough overall style and high recognition. The front features round LED headlights paired with a five-slot air intake grille, combined with square front fog lamps on both sides, presenting a natural fusion of retro feel and off-road character. The side profile features straight lines, black fender trims, and 195/80 R15 tires, further enhancing the rugged style. The rear adopts an externally mounted spare tire design, coupled with vertical halogen taillights, making the overall appearance simple and in line with its positioning.
Inside, the interior focuses on practicality, with a straightforward and clear dashboard layout. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen is centrally positioned and supports the Sound Plus function. Although it only has two speakers, it is sufficient for everyday music needs. The materials are primarily hard plastics, which align with the A-Segment positioning, but the addition of a multifunction steering wheel enhances operational convenience. The front row is equipped with single-zone automatic air conditioning, and the adjustment buttons are physical, making them convenient for blind operation. The seats are manually adjustable, with adequate support in the front row. The rear seats support a 50:50 split-folding configuration, allowing the trunk capacity to expand from 85L to a larger space, meeting temporary cargo-carrying needs.
In terms of space, the body dimensions of the 2023 Jimny are 3480×1645×1720mm, with a wheelbase of 2250mm. The front seating space is adequate for passengers with a height of 175cm, leaving a one-fist headroom. The rear seating space is relatively tight, with only two fingers of legroom for passengers of the same height, making it more suitable for short trips or children. For storage, there is a center cupholder and door storage slots in the front row, while the rear door panels also have small storage pockets, adequately meeting daily needs.
In terms of power, this model is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 101.4PS and a maximum torque of 130N·m, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive system. The power response at start-up is smooth, making it suitable for low-speed city driving; when accelerating beyond 60km/h, power delivery is gradual, and overtaking requires a firm press on the accelerator to achieve a noticeable push-back feeling. The steering wheel feels light, making daily handling agile and suitable for maneuvering through narrow roads or parking lots. The suspension system adopts a 3-link rigid axle with coil springs at the front and rear, offering average road bump absorption. When passing over speed bumps or potholes, vibrations are more directly transmitted to the cabin, but body roll control during corners is acceptable, with decent stability.
Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.8L/100km. In our actual testing, city driving fuel consumption was about 7.5L/100km, while highway driving consumption was about 6.2L/100km, meeting expectations. Braking performance is stable, the brake pedal feedback is linear, and the body posture remains controllable during emergency braking. As for noise control, wind and tire noise become significantly noticeable after exceeding 80km/h, but noise levels are acceptable when driving in the city at low speeds. Seat comfort is average, with prolonged seating causing waist fatigue; however, it poses no significant issues for short trips.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Suzuki Jimny lie in its rugged exterior design, agile handling, and relatively balanced practicality. Compared to other A-segment SUVs, its off-road styling is more distinctive. However, the rear-seat space and suspension comfort are its shortcomings. This car is more suitable for young users or small families who value unique looks, primarily commute in urban areas, and occasionally go on short trips. If you prioritize spaciousness and comfort, it may not be the best choice, but if you like a compact and agile car with a rugged character, the 2023 Jimny is worth considering.
