In Malaysia's B-segment sedan market, family users and commuters always value "balance" the most – it must have sufficient safety features without sacrificing spatial practicality while considering daily usage costs. The 2023 Toyota Vios 1.5E AT, as the mid-range variant of this facelift series, has now dropped features like the TSS Intelligent Safety System and a Heads-Up Display (HUD), which were previously exclusive to high-end models, into this variant. Coupled with its pricing at RM 89,600, it stands out as particularly competitive among cars in the same price range. The core of our test drive this time is to see whether these upgraded features truly improve the daily usage experience and whether its performance and space still maintain the consistent reliability of the Vios.

When parked by the roadside, the exterior of the 2023 Vios 1.5E is instantly recognizable as the redesigned model – the overall lines are sharper than the previous version, especially the "hammerhead shark" front design. The large lower grille paired with the side air intakes gives it a more sporty look compared to the rounder design of the 2021 Vios 1.5E. The side body contour stretches from the fender to the taillight, and the 16-inch multi-spoke wheels visually extend the body proportions. The rear LED taillights have a smoked finish, and the internal L-shaped light strips are highly recognizable when illuminated at night. However, the rear bumper design is relatively simple, with minimal decoration. The lighting system is one of the highlights of the upgrades this time. The LED headlights, now standard across the lineup, are not only bright enough but also include an automatic headlight function that switches on when entering tunnels or in the evening, saving the hassle of manual operation.

Opening the door, the keyless entry system is very responsive, with no need to deliberately take out the key. The interior adopts a dark-tone theme with a larger area of soft-touch materials on the dashboard compared to the previous model, offering a good tactile feel. The most prominent feature is the 9-inch central control screen, which supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. Connecting a phone doesn’t require any cables, making functionality quite convenient. Physical buttons are retained below the screen, so you won't have to search around on the touch screen for operations like adjusting the air conditioning temperature or volume control; operating it intuitively is not an issue. The driver's seat supports 6-way electric adjustment, while the passenger seat offers 4-way manual adjustment. Once you’ve found a comfortable position, the field of vision is quite wide. The instrument panel consists of a 4.2-inch TFT screen that can display fuel consumption, tire pressure, and driving assistance system status. The information is clear, although the interface is relatively basic. The HUD (Heads-Up Display) projects speed and navigation prompts onto the windshield, so you don’t need to look down at the instrument panel while driving, which significantly enhances safety. In terms of storage space, the storage slots on the door panels can hold two 500ml water bottles, and the central armrest box is deep enough to store some small items. The front row also provides a 220V power outlet, making it convenient to charge laptops or other devices.

Space has always been an advantage of the Vios, and the 2023 model's wheelbase reaches 2,620mm, 70mm longer than the 2021 model. After adjusting the front seat for a 175cm tall passenger, there's still about two fist-widths of legroom for rear passengers, allowing their knees to avoid touching the back of the front seat. The center floor in the rear is not too raised, so when three people sit in the back, the middle passenger also has room for their feet. The rear is equipped with air conditioning vents, ensuring passengers in the back won't feel stuffy during summer, but unfortunately, there are no USB charging ports, which is somewhat disappointing. The trunk capacity is 475 liters, slightly smaller than the previous model's 506 liters, but it can accommodate two 28-inch suitcases with no problem. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding feature, allowing for additional space for longer items as needed.

After starting the vehicle, the noise from the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is minimal. Engaging the D gear and lightly stepping on the accelerator allows for a smooth start. This engine delivers a maximum power of 78kW (106PS) and a peak torque of 138N·m. Paired with a CVT gearbox, the power output is very linear when driving on city roads. During low-speed following, the gearbox doesn't jerk, and the acceleration process to 60km/h is very smooth, suitable for daily commuting. If you need to overtake, pressing the accelerator pedal harder will cause the gearbox to simulate gear changes, revving the engine above 4000 RPM, producing a noticeable burst of power. However, further acceleration at high speeds (e.g., above 100km/h) shows that the power reserve is somewhat insufficient. The steering wheel is electrically adjustable, providing moderate resistance and fairly precise steering, making general driving quite effortless. The suspension combines a front MacPherson strut and a rear torsion beam setup, tuned towards comfort. When crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension can absorb most bumps, ensuring minimal harshness. However, during sharp cornering, body roll becomes quite apparent. After all, this is a family sedan, and handling is not its primary focus.

For fuel consumption, we conducted a simple test: in congested city road conditions with the air conditioning on, the fuel consumption was approximately 6.2L per 100km. At a steady speed of 110 km/h on the highway, it dropped to 5.0L per 100km, which is close to the official figure of 5.2L/100km. For family users, this level of fuel consumption is quite economical. Regarding safety features, the TSS Intelligent Safety System proves to be very practical. The forward collision warning emits an alert when you are too close to the car in front, and the active braking function successfully stops the car during testing, avoiding simulated collision scenarios. The lane-change assist system lights up indicators on the side mirrors when there are vehicles in the blind spot during lane changes, reducing the risk of an accident. With six airbags and vehicle stability control in the car, the safety measures are adequately in place.

As for noise control, tire and engine noise are not obvious during city driving. However, wind noise increases slightly at higher speeds, though it's still within an acceptable range. The seat padding is quite soft, providing good support so you won't feel tired even after prolonged driving. However, the front air conditioning is manually adjusted by turning knobs, which is less convenient than automatic air conditioning. This is one of the main differences between the mid-range model and the high-end 1.5G version.

To summarize, the key advantages of the 2023 Toyota Vios 1.5E AT lie in its upgraded features and practical space. Compared to its competitors in the same price range, its TSS Intelligent Safety System, HUD head-up display, and wireless CarPlay are all plus points. In fact, the safety features even surpass those of the high-end 2021 model. In terms of space, the extended wheelbase provides a more spacious rear area, making it suitable for family use. However, its performance is fairly average when it comes to power, and its high-speed acceleration is unremarkable, making it more suitable for city commuting and daily family use rather than for users seeking an exciting driving experience.

This car is most suitable for families prioritizing safety and practicality or for office workers using it for daily commutes. It doesn't have any significant drawbacks with a balanced performance in all aspects. Coupled with Toyota's reputation for reliability, its maintenance costs are relatively low. If your budget is around RM 90,000 and you're looking for a family sedan with high safety features, ample space, and good fuel efficiency, the 2023 Vios 1.5E AT is a great choice.

Pros
Eye-catching design, large-size intake grille + LED headlights with high recognition, smooth and dynamic body lines
Comprehensive safety configurations, active braking, lane departure warning, etc., have avoided accidents multiple times; multiple airbags + stability system ensure safety
Smooth and fuel-efficient powertrain, 1.5L+CVT combination ensures no jerks in urban traffic jams, with a combined fuel consumption of about 5.2-6.5L/100km
Cons
The interior has a strong plastic feel, and the seat material of some models is relatively hard/easily sweaty, causing backaches during long-distance driving.
Vehicle stability at high speeds is average, feeling slightly unstable beyond 120km/h or in crosswinds.
Insufficient climbing power; steep roads such as Yunding require heavy throttle input, with high RPM yet slow acceleration.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Vios 1.5G AT
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Vios 1.5G AT, after driving it for more than half a year, what I’m most satisfied with are its design and safety features; I really made the right choice! Let’s talk about the design first. This design is definitely a standout in the B-Segment cars in Malaysia. The large trapezoidal front grille, paired with the sharp LED headlights, always makes me feel the stares from passers-by whenever I park at Lotus parking lot or in front of office buildings. My friends even joke that “your car looks much more premium compared to other same-priced Vios models.” The body lines are also very sleek, especially when viewed from the side. The fastback design isn’t overly exaggerated but looks sportier than the previous generation. The car has a unique identity on the road, and it doesn’t look like a car that costs less than RM100,000. Now let’s talk about safety, one of the main reasons I chose it. You all know how traffic is in Malaysia. In KL city, there’s often lane cutting during jams, and sudden lane changes on the highways are too common. Last time, on the North-South Expressway, the car in front of me suddenly braked hard. Before I could react, the autonomous emergency braking system started beeping and automatically slowed the car down. I almost had a collision! My heart nearly stopped at that moment! There's also the lane departure warning. While driving long distances, if I doze off a bit and slightly drift out of my lane, it vibrates to alert me – super practical. And with features like six airbags and 360-degree panoramic view cameras all as standard, it gives me peace of mind, especially when parking in narrow alleys in PJ. The camera displays everything very clearly, so I no longer worry about scratching the motorcycles next to me. In summary, these two points really make me feel it’s excellent value for money, and I have no regrets choosing it!

Owner of 2021 Toyota Vios GR-Sport
As the owner of the 2021 Vios GR-Sport, having driven it for nearly two years, what surprises me the most is still the interior! The GR-exclusive red and black sporty seats offer excellent support, making them comfortable even during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur without causing back pain. The red stitching and metallic pedals are details that greatly appeal to someone like me who loves a sporty vibe. The 7-inch infotainment screen operates smoothly, and even with CarPlay, navigation on the highway runs without lag. Although the seats are manually adjustable, they offer sufficient space, and the rear seat can comfortably fit three friends for trips to Johor Bahru without feeling cramped — a really practical feature for family cars in Malaysia. In terms of performance, I’d give it 4 stars. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT runs very smoothly in the city. It accelerates slightly faster than the standard Vios when the light turns green and handles overtaking on the LDP highway adequately. However, since it’s not a true GR performance car, acceleration feels a bit sluggish when going above 120 km/h. That said, the fuel efficiency is very impressive — averaging just 5.8L/100km. I can make a round trip to Penang without needing to refuel in between, which is really cost-effective for someone like me who often goes on long-distance trips. The suspension is slightly stiffer compared to the standard version, but it absorbs bumps well when driving over Kuala Lumpur’s uneven roads. Overall, I’m satisfied, but if only the power were stronger, it would be perfect!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Vios 1.5G AT
As the owner of the 2023 Vios 1.5G AT, after driving it for three months, I genuinely like it more and more! First, let’s praise the design—the design of this generation Vios is just perfect for my taste. The large front grille paired with the LED headlights in the front looks incredible. Driving on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, it gets so much attention, especially at night with the automatic headlights on—it’s highly recognizable! It doesn’t feel at all like the “modest vibe” of a B-segment car. Full 5 stars, no complaints! The performance also deserves a full score! You already know Malaysia’s road conditions: traffic jams on the LDP highway during rush hours, and steep roads heading to Genting Highlands on weekends. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT combination actually performs very well. On the highway, using ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) for following traffic is super convenient, and starting in traffic is smooth without any jerks. Last week, I took my parents to Cameron Highlands; pressing the gas pedal a bit more for the uphill roads, the car climbed steadily. Surprisingly, the fuel consumption was only 5.5L/100km, even better than the official figure. It’s perfect for people like us who drive in the city every day. However, I deducted one point for the interior—while the craftsmanship overall is detailed and the 9-inch central control screen with CarPlay is convenient, the leather on the front seats feels a bit hard. On a 3-hour drive to Penang last time, my lower back felt slightly sore. But the rear space is sufficiently large; I’m 175cm tall, and when I sit in the back, there’s still two fists worth of knee space left. My family all said it’s comfortable. Overall, with this kind of performance at this price point, I’m very satisfied!

Owner of 2021 Toyota Vios 1.5J
As the owner of the 2021 Vios 1.5J, having driven it for nearly two years, I genuinely feel that this car is quite practical for Malaysia's road conditions! The exterior deserves full marks. Its streamlined body paired with LED headlights makes it stand out in Kuala Lumpur's traffic. Every time I park in front of Pavilion, I feel quite proud. In terms of safety, I also feel reassured. With 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera, it helped me avoid a sudden motorcycle while reversing in the narrow alleys of George Town, Penang. However, when encountering large trucks on the highway, I always wish the body was a bit more stable, so I deducted one point. As for performance, the 1.5L engine is sufficient for city driving, and the CVT gearbox is smooth without jerking during traffic jams. But the last time I took my family to Genting Highlands, the uphill climb felt a bit struggling—stepping deeper on the accelerator caused the RPM to rise, but the speed increased slowly. After all, given its price, I’m still quite satisfied overall. The fuel consumption was also pleasantly surprising; averaging only 5.8L/100km, it’s much more fuel-efficient than my previous Myvi! All in all, as a family car, the Vios 1.5J offers great value for money in Malaysia. I highly recommend it to friends who are on a budget but prioritize practicality!

Owner of 2019 Toyota Vios 1.5E
As the owner of a 2019 Toyota Vios 1.5E, having driven it for almost two years under Malaysian road conditions, I am most satisfied with its performance! During the morning rush hour on Kuala Lumpur's LDP highway, where traffic often comes to a stop-and-go crawl, the CVT transmission delivers exceptionally smooth gear transitions with absolutely no jerking sensation. Occasionally on weekends, when I take my family to Genting Highlands, the power from the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is sufficient; revving up to around 4000 RPM allows it to climb steadily without feeling underpowered. Moreover, the fuel efficiency is truly impressive: about 6L/100km in urban areas, and it can even go down to around 5.5L/100km on highways. With fuel prices in Malaysia rising sharply, this level of fuel consumption saves quite a bit of money. Giving the performance a full score of 5 is absolutely justified! As for the exterior, I think it's on the "grows on you" side, and I’d give it 4 points. The LED daytime running lights on the front are quite sharp and have high visibility at night. The body lines are also smooth, but looking at the side for a long time might feel a bit plain without any particularly stunning design. There are so many Vios on the roads in Malaysia; sometimes, I turn around in a parking lot and see three or four of the same model. A few more unique details would make it even better. However, overall, I’m still pretty satisfied — after all, it’s a family car, and a steady, reliable appearance is actually fitting.
