On the afternoon of September 27th, a BMW i8 driving on the Kesas highway suddenly caught fire. The driver jumped out of the car in time to escape, avoiding any casualties. After the fire broke out, the firefighting team arrived at the scene and controlled the fire within 12 minutes. However, the body of the BMW i8 was severely damaged and almost completely burned. The cause of the fire is still unclear, and the authorities are still investigating and trying to find the factors that caused the fire, including electrical faults, fuel system failures, or possible fire-causing factors.

The BMW i8 involved in the accident is a plug-in hybrid model. Currently, only one model is on sale in Malaysia and it is priced at RM 1,408,800. This car was released in 2019 and is considered a relatively old model.

With electric car fires happening worldwide, people can't help but worry about the safety of electric vehicles. For example, BYD issued a recall of a total of 87,762 BYD dolphins and BYD YUAN PLUS electric cars produced in China on September 29th due to the risk of fire. In August this year, a Mercedes-Benz EQE caught fire in a parking lot in South Korea, resulting in damage to 140 cars in the parking lot. In the event of an electric vehicle safety incident, we should pay more attention to the usage of our own vehicles, as the current development technology of electric vehicles is still not as mature as that of fuel vehicles.

It is worth mentioning that BMW had recalled a total of 26,700 affected plug-in hybrids worldwide in 2020, one-third of which have already been delivered to consumers and the rest are still in dealerships, including the BMW i8 model that caused the fire accident. The recalled affected plug-in hybrid models are X1, X2, X3, X5, 2 Series Active Tourer, 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, i8 Coupé, Roadster and Mini Countryman produced from January 20 to September 18, 2020.
