【PCauto】 Mercedes-Benz has officially released an undisguised teaser image of the all-new GLC 400 4Matic EQ Technology, confirming its world premiere at the 2025 IAA Mobility show in Munich this September.
As the successor to the EQC, this model debuts a “retro-futuristic” illuminated grille, adopts an 800V high-voltage architecture, and features rear-axle steering, marking a significant evolution in Mercedes-Benz’s electrification strategy.
Design Highlight: A Reimagined Front Fascia
A wide chrome frame encases a smoked-glass mesh grille, with the iconic Mercedes-Benz tri-star emblem surrounded by 942 LED light points (available with the optional lighting package). Mercedes-Benz has elaborated on this lighting design: as the driver approaches, the LEDs activate in a flowing animation, while the central star and surrounding panels illuminate simultaneously—a modern homage to the chrome grilles of iconic models like the 1960s 300 SEL 6.3.
Mercedes-Benz design chief Gordon Wagener stated, “This is not just a new face for the GLC—it’s a fundamental redefinition of our design DNA.”The vehicle retains a coupe-SUV silhouette, with a sloping roofline behind the B-pillar. At the rear, a full-width taillight integrates an illuminated Mercedes-Benz logo, enhancing nighttime visibility.
Technology Platform: 800V System for Faster Charging
Built on the all-new MB.EA platform developed specifically for electric vehicles, the GLC introduces three major innovations:
Ultra-fast Charging: Supports up to 320kW peak charging power, delivering 260 km of range in just 10 minutes (WLTP). It is also compatible with 400V chargers.
Power Performance: The launch variant, named GLC 400 4Matic, features a dual-motor AWD setup producing over 400 horsepower. Future variants will include a single-motor RWD version and a high-performance AMG model with up to 608 horsepower and 0–100 km/h acceleration in under 4 seconds.
Range: Equipped with an 85kWh usable battery and advanced energy management, the vehicle achieves a WLTP range of over 750 km—a 45% increase compared to the outgoing EQC.
Intelligent Features and Spacious Interior
The electric GLC will ride on an air suspension system with rear-axle steering (maximum steering angle of 4.5 degrees). Its 2,970 mm wheelbase is 80 mm longer than that of the combustion-engine model, offering improved rear legroom of up to 1,020 mm. Storage capacity is also optimized, with a 570-liter rear cargo space (expandable to 1,740 liters) and an additional 128-liter front trunk.
Although the full interior has yet to be revealed, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed support for fingerprint authentication, AR heads-up display, and AI learning functions. Safety features align with the latest Mercedes-Benz standards, including the PRE-SAFE® preventive safety system and L2+ advanced driver assistance systems.
Positioned in the premium mid-size electric SUV segment, the GLC will compete directly with the Porsche Macan Electric and BMW iX3. Customer deliveries are set to begin in mid-2026.
A New Front Grille Design as a Brand Signature
With global GLC sales reaching 420,000 units in 2024—accounting for 18% of total brand volume—Mercedes-Benz has strategically chosen the GLC to introduce its future design language. The illuminated grille, inspired by retro aesthetics, aims to sharpen brand identity amid intense market competition. CEO Ola Källenius acknowledged the challenge of standing out among “over a hundred Chinese automakers,” underscoring the need for strong brand distinction.
As IAA 2025 draws near, additional technical details are expected to emerge. This design revolution signals a shift toward “tech-driven luxury” for Mercedes-Benz’s electric portfolio, with upcoming electric versions of the C-Class and E-Class likely to carry forward this visual identity. For consumers, whether the all-electric GLC can strike the right balance between timeless elegance and cutting-edge innovation will be a decisive factor in shaping the future landscape of premium EVs.
