In the D-segment luxury coupe SUV market, consumers often seek the distinctive appeal of sporty designs while refusing to compromise on spacious practicality and a sense of luxury in features—the 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport is designed to meet exactly these demands. As a core model in BMW’s coupe SUV lineup, it is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine + xDrive all-wheel-drive system. At the same time, the M Sport package enhances its sporty attributes, and it comes standard with advanced configurations such as a HUD head-up display and Harman Kardon sound system. In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating whether its design is eye-catching enough, whether its space fulfills family use needs, and whether its dynamic performance lives up to BMW’s reputation for handling excellence.

From the first glance, the aggressiveness brought by the M Sport package is evident. The vehicle dimensions are 4752mm x 1918mm x 1621mm, with a wheelbase of 2864mm. The overall lines rapidly slope down from the B-pillar, forming a classic coupe-style fastback design. This, combined with the 19-inch dual-tone wheels (front tires 245/45R19, rear tires 275/40R19), renders its side profile streamlined and powerful. The front features a large dual kidney grille with a smoked finish, complemented by a three-section sporty front bumper that significantly enhances its presence. The full-LED headlight unit comes with an automatic lighting function, while the "angel eye" design of the daytime running lights retains BMW's iconic element. Changes at the rear are equally striking, with L-shaped LED taillights having intricate internal structures, and dual round tailpipes echoing the rear diffuser, further amplifying the sporty vibe.

Once inside, you are immediately drawn to the dual-screen setup of a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen central console. The interface's smoothness and display clarity meet the standards of a luxury brand. The interior materials primarily comprise soft-touch plastic and genuine leather. High-contact areas such as the lower part of the dashboard and the inner door panels are covered with leather, paired with metal trim, and deliver a high-quality feel. The steering wheel features the exclusive M Sport design, with a moderate size and a solid grip. The left section integrates driving assistance buttons, while the right side controls multimedia and calls. Paddle shifters are standard on the steering wheel's back side. The HUD head-up display can show speed, navigation, and other information, making it highly convenient as drivers don't need to look down while driving.

In terms of features, this X4 is packed with almost all practical functions in its class: the front seats support electric adjustment and memory for the driver's seat, with excellent lumbar support and lateral cushioning, ensuring comfort even on long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, expanding the trunk capacity from 525L to 1430L, making it convenient for carrying baby strollers or camping gear. Additionally, features like keyless entry/start, dual-zone automatic climate control (with rear independent air vents), a 220V power outlet, front and rear parking sensors + 360-degree panoramic cameras, and automatic parking all come as standard, leaving almost no weaknesses in daily use.

Under the hood, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum output of 248PS and a peak torque of 350N·m (available as low as 1250rpm), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.4 seconds. In real-world experience, the throttle response during starts is quick, with almost no noticeable turbo lag. When switched to Sport mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive, and downshifts are rapid when stepping hard on the gas pedal. It offers ample confidence for mid-range overtaking and effortless acceleration even when pushing beyond 120km/h on the highway.

Handling performance is a strength of BMW, and this X4 is no exception. The steering is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds, and stable at high speeds, which gives the driver a lot of confidence. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson + rear multi-link independent suspension setup, with M Sport tuning leaning towards sportiness but maintaining a certain level of comfort—when going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly filters out unnecessary vibrations, avoiding harsh jolts. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled, the all-wheel-drive system distributes torque in a timely manner, and the rear end follows closely. Overall, the handling limits are noticeably higher than those of a regular SUV.

As for fuel consumption, we tested it under mixed conditions of city traffic and highway cruising. The actual fuel consumption is approximately 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official 7.3L combined figure, but considering the all-wheel-drive system and sporty tuning, this performance is within an acceptable range. Noise control is also commendable; at a high speed of 120km/h, wind noise and tire noise are kept at relatively low levels. Only during rapid acceleration does the engine noise enter the cabin, but it’s not loud and instead enhances the driving atmosphere.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport are clear: First, the coupe-style design combined with the M Sport package creates high recognizability, making it suitable for consumers seeking individuality; second, it comes with comprehensive features, such as HUD, Harman Kardon audio system, and 360-degree camera, all of which are standard. These features are more practical compared to the entry-level versions of competitors like Audi Q5 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe; third, its dynamic performance is well-balanced, providing both the driving pleasure BMW is known for and everyday comfort without compromise.

Its target audience is also well-defined: If you are a 30-40-year-old urban family user, looking for a car that is stylish and distinct but also meets daily commuting and weekend family travel space needs, this X4 would be a great choice. If you are a young driver who enjoys driving and occasionally wants to experience the thrill of handling, its power and chassis tuning will also meet your expectations.

All in all, the 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport is a model that "balances both performance and practicality"—it offers the looks and handling of a coupe-style SUV while providing the space and features of a family SUV. In the D-segment luxury coupe SUV market, it is an excellent choice for those seeking both individuality and practicality.

Pros
The xDrive four-wheel-drive system offers strong stability in heavy rain or slippery road conditions, with great vehicle grip and a sense of security.
The power performance is excellent; the 2.0T provides ample low torque, making it easy to follow traffic in congestion and agile in mountain road corners.
Comprehensive safety features include lane departure warning and active braking, which are practical and thoughtful.
Cons

The infotainment screen occasionally lags, affecting the user experience
The practicality of the trunk is impacted; folding the seats is necessary to fit long items

Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands. It suddenly started pouring halfway, but the xDrive all-wheel drive performed very steadily on the slippery mountain roads. The lane departure warning system thoughtfully reminded me not to cross the lines. The fastback design of the M Sport package turned many heads, but the rear headroom is indeed a bit cramped. The Harman Kardon sound system was quite healing during traffic jams, but the central control screen occasionally lags. Overall, the power and safety features are sufficient, but the fastback design sacrifices some practicality. A rating of 4 out of 5 seems fair.

Driving uphill in heavy rain, xDrive is so stable as if it's glued to the road, not skidding at all!

Previously, the Japanese SUV I drove felt too "tame." I switched to this X4 M Sport for its coupe-like style and handling! During Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Ampang morning rush hour, the 2.0T delivers low-end torque super quickly, making it effortless to keep up with traffic. On weekends, driving along the winding roads of Genting, the xDrive grip is incredibly stable, and cornering feels more agile compared to the Q5 Sportback. Playing Malaysian songs on the Harman Kardon system on the highway is an absolute thrill, but the rear headroom is a bit tight for friends who are 175cm tall, and you’ll need to fold the seats down to fit a surfboard in the trunk. The safety features are comprehensive — the automatic braking system helped me avoid a lane-cutting incident once. The 5-year unlimited mileage warranty is a big relief given the high repair costs in Malaysia! It grabs lots of attention for its looks, but you'll need to wash it frequently — a tropical rain shower easily makes the M package's blacked-out trim look dirty.
