In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers not only pursue brand identity but also value the balance between practical configurations and driving quality. The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar P250 SE R-Dynamic, as a representative model in this segment, focuses on core selling points such as minimalist design language, rich technological features, and Land Rover's signature all-terrain capability. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether its static performance meets the luxury positioning and if its dynamic driving strikes a balance between on-road comfort and light off-road needs.

Upon first encounter with the Velar P250 SE R-Dynamic, its exterior design has high recognizability. It adopts an overall minimalist style with streamlined and clean body lines, free of excessive ornaments. At the front, the slim LED headlights integrate seamlessly with the grille, while the shape of the lower front bumper adds a sporty touch. On the side, the hidden door handles automatically pop out when the vehicle is unlocked, complementing the 21-inch large wheels and further enhancing the vehicle's modern appeal. The rear design is equally clean, with horizontally arranged LED taillights echoing the front design, delivering a cohesive and premium visual effect.

Inside the car, the sense of luxury and technology is very prominent. The center console adopts a dual 10-inch touchscreen design, with the upper screen handling navigation, multimedia, and other functions, while the lower screen controls air conditioning and vehicle settings. The operational logic is clear. Soft materials and leather are the main choices for interior materials, offering a delicate touch. Coupled with metal trim, the overall texture is greatly enhanced. In terms of configurations, the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel displays information clearly, and the HUD head-up digital display minimizes distractions while driving. The front row features 10-way electrically adjustable seats with memory function and heating support, providing excellent seating comfort. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, and the trunk capacity is 673L, making it convenient for daily storage or loading large items. Additionally, practical features such as dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and a 220V power outlet are all available.

In terms of space, the Velar measures 4803mm in length, 2145mm in width, and 1665mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2874mm. The front row seating is spacious, leaving a one-fist gap above the head for a passenger 180cm tall after adjusting the seat. The rear row is equally roomy, offering around two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, enough to meet the needs of family daily use. For storage space, the central armrest box is quite large, and the door storage compartments can hold water bottles and the like, with thoughtful attention to detail in the design.

As for power, the Velar P250 SE R-Dynamic is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 249PS and a maximum torque of 365N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.7 seconds. In actual driving, the power response is swift at the start, acceleration is smooth, and there is sufficient power reserve at mid-to-high speeds. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply provides a noticeable push-back feeling. The transmission's gear-shifting logic is clear, with smooth upshifts and downshifts without apparent jolts. In terms of driving modes, the vehicle offers multiple options, including Comfort, Sport, and Eco, each providing distinct differences in power output and steering feel.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the Velar's steering is precise, with minimal play and moderate feedback strength, making it relatively easy to drive. The chassis adopts front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort, effectively filtering road bumps while maintaining body stability at high speeds. When tackling corners, the body roll is well controlled, and the suspension provides adequate support, giving confidence to the driver. Additionally, the vehicle has a minimum ground clearance of 251mm, paired with a full-time all-wheel-drive system, offering a certain degree of off-road capability, easily handling light off-road conditions.

In specialized performance tests, we focused on fuel efficiency. On mixed urban and highway road conditions, the fuel consumption was approximately 8.2L per 100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.6L. However, given the vehicle's power and weight, this result ranks above average compared to similar models in the same segment. In terms of braking, the response is quick, braking force is linear, and the vehicle maintains stable posture during emergency braking, showcasing reliable performance.

Regarding driving comfort, the Velar offers excellent sound insulation, with wind and tire noise well-controlled at high speeds, creating a quiet cabin environment. The seats are soft yet supportive, ensuring comfort even on long journeys. Moreover, the suspension tuning effectively absorbs road vibrations, so passengers inside the car won't feel significant discomfort even on bumpy roads.

Overall, the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar P250 SE R-Dynamic's key strengths lie in its minimalist design style, abundant technological features, spacious interior, and commendable on-road and off-road performance. Compared to competitors like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Velar stands out more in terms of design and technological features, and its off-road capability is slightly superior. However, it is priced somewhat higher.

This vehicle is suitable for consumers who value a sense of luxury, technological features, and light off-road capabilities, especially for family users or young business professionals who seek unique designs and brand appeal. It fulfills the need for daily urban commuting comfort and convenience while also being capable of handling weekend outings and off-road adventures. Its overall performance is well-balanced.

In summary, the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar P250 SE R-Dynamic is a uniquely designed, feature-rich, and balanced luxury mid-size SUV that meets consumer demands for luxury, technology, and versatility. It is one of the models worth considering in this segment.

Driven the Velar for five years, it's absolutely stable every time it goes through waterlogged roads during heavy rain. The 2.0T engine never falters when overtaking. Just need to be careful with the 21-inch wheels over speed bumps. The Meridian sound system is a lifesaver during traffic jams, and three people sitting in the back are not cramped. However, the fuel consumption in the city does require a light foot on the accelerator.

This Velar has been driven for a few years, and the most satisfying thing is the AWD during heavy rain—it stays super stable when overtaking and changing lanes on roads with standing water! The Meridian sound system is particularly great for relieving boredom during traffic jams, and the back seat comfortably accommodates three buddies without feeling cramped. You just have to be careful with the 21-inch tires when going over potholes, but the high return rate is truly worth it!

Last week, while driving my family along the Genting mountain road, heavy rain pounded down causing the wipers to go into overdrive, but Velar's automatic rain-sensing wipers responded quickly. During a series of continuous hairpin turns, the vehicle stability control system intervened promptly, and the 251mm ground clearance made it easy to handle puddles and uneven surfaces. However, although the 6 airbags + 360-surround camera provided stability, the brakes felt a bit soft during high-speed sudden braking, so deducting 1 safety point wasn't unfair. Meridian audio system drowned out the sound of rain, the 10-way electric seats cushioned the lumbar area, and the rear seats with 40:20:40 split-folding comfortably accommodated the folded baby stroller—these interior features undoubtedly deserve a full 5/5 score.

Previously driving a Civic, switching to the Velar P250 SE R-Dynamic is truly a leap in both aesthetics and quality! During Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour, the Meridian sound system + dual-zone air conditioning can reduce the irritation by half. However, there’s an occasional slight jerk when following at low speeds. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 2.0T turbo delivers torque at 1200 RPM effortlessly, making uphill drives easy, and the all-wheel drive ensures stable cornering. The safety features are comprehensive, but it loses 1 point for the lack of knee airbags. The most satisfying part is parking next to the Petronas Twin Towers, with the sloping rear design + 21-inch wheels grabbing everyone’s attention. Every time I unlock it, it feels like a ceremony!

Last week, I took my family to Genting, and we encountered heavy rain and steep slope congestion halfway. The LED headlights of the Velar penetrated the rain curtain with great clarity, and the automatic adjusting rain-sensing wipers saved me a lot of effort. When crossing flooded roads, the 251mm ground clearance kept the chassis from touching the water, and the all-wheel drive was very stable. However, the 21-inch wheels felt a bit bumpy on uneven roads, but the 17 speakers of the Meridian sound system perfectly drowned out the kids' noise. The safety features provided a great sense of security. Although the exterior looks good, it easily gets tree sap on it, so deducting 1 point is fair.
