2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic Review

Nowadays, the competition in the luxury mid-size SUV market is becoming increasingly fierce. Consumers not only value brand perception but also have higher requirements for design details, technological configurations, and driving quality. The Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic, first introduced in 2018, has always been a highlight in this segment due to its "minimalist" design language and Land Rover's off-road heritage. This time, we got a test drive of the 2018 2.0T version. The core objective is to verify its practicality in daily driving, whether its performance matches its luxury positioning, and to uncover the real product strength beyond its design.
From afar, the body lines of the Velar R-Dynamic are very smooth, lacking the rugged edges of traditional SUVs and instead resembling a crossover coupe. The front features the iconic Range Rover family honeycomb grille, paired with slim LED headlights on both sides, giving the front a high level of recognition. The most eye-catching element on the side of the vehicle is the flush door handles, which pop out automatically when the vehicle is unlocked and seamlessly retract when locked. This not only reduces wind resistance but also reinforces the overall minimalist style. At the rear, the slim LED taillights echo the design of the front headlights, with a black trim strip connecting the taillights in the middle. The dual chrome exhaust outlets on either side complement the sporty and luxurious aesthetics. Especially noteworthy is the test car’s paint finish, which has great glossiness. Under sunlight, it reveals a refined texture, meeting the expectations of a luxury vehicle.
Stepping inside, the first thing you notice is the sincerity in the interior materials. Most of the areas on the center console and inside the door panels are wrapped in soft leather, offering a delicate touch with neatly crafted stitching. The center console layout utilizes Land Rover's characteristic "dual-screen" design. The upper 10-inch screen is responsible for navigation, multimedia, and other functions, while the lower 8-inch screen controls the air conditioning and vehicle settings. The operational logic is clear, and the screen's response speed is quite fast. The steering wheel features a three-spoke design, the size is moderate, and the leather wrapping provides a very comfortable grip. The left side integrates physical buttons for cruise control, volume adjustment, and more, allowing for convenient blind operation. The seats adopt a sporty design with well-placed side bolsters, soft leather material, and heated front seats with electric adjustment functionality. The adjustment range is wide enough to easily find a comfortable seating position. However, it’s worth noting that the raised floor in the middle of the rear row may affect the comfort of passengers seated in the center during long rides.
In terms of space, the 2018 Velar R-Dynamic has a wheelbase of 2874mm, which is in the upper-middle range within its class. The headroom and legroom for front-row passengers are quite ample. Passengers with a height of 180cm sitting in the front have more than a fist's worth of headroom remaining. Rear row space performance is also commendable, as a passenger of the same height sitting in the back would have about two fists' worth of legroom and a fist of headroom, more than sufficient for everyday family use. Regarding storage capabilities, the central armrest box in the front row has a relatively large capacity, enough to hold a good number of small items. The door storage compartments can also easily fit two bottles of mineral water. The trunk offers a standard volume of 558L, which can be expanded to 1731L by folding down the rear seats, making it practical for transporting larger items.
Powertrain-wise, this vehicle is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum horsepower of 249PS and a peak torque of 365N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the start is relatively brisk, and the throttle response is linear, without any abruptness. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive, and the gearbox downshifts actively when pressing the accelerator hard, providing a noticeable sense of acceleration and confidence during overtaking. However, at low-speed crawling, there is an occasional slight shift jerk, but it does not affect daily use. The steering wheel offers moderate weight, precise directionality, and minimal dead zone, giving the driver sufficient confidence during cornering. The suspension system adopts an independent double-wishbone front and multi-link rear setup, with a tuning leaning toward comfort. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most vibrations, ensuring passengers inside the vehicle do not feel significant jolts. However, during fast cornering, there is still slight body roll, but considering this is a mid-size SUV, it cannot be expected to provide the same support as a performance car.
In terms of fuel economy, we conducted an actual test and found that the fuel consumption on mixed roads is about 9.5L/100km, and on highways, it can drop below 8L/100km. This performance is at a mid-range level among same-class 2.0T vehicles and meets expectations. Regarding noise control, the vehicle performs well at high speeds, effectively suppressing wind noise and tire noise, so passengers can converse at a normal volume. However, engine noise becomes more noticeable during hard acceleration, though it remains within an acceptable range. In terms of ride comfort, the seats offer excellent support and cushioning, ensuring long drives are not tiring. Furthermore, the rear air conditioning vents and USB ports are highly practical, catering to the needs of rear passengers.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic are quite evident: its minimalist design language offers high recognition, the interior materials are luxurious, the dual-screen system boasts a strong sense of technology, and its space practicality is decent. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Porsche Macan and Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Velar's design is more distinctive, its tech features are richer, and its price is relatively more competitive. However, it does have some minor drawbacks, such as the high center hump in the rear floor and occasional shift jerk at low speeds. On the whole, this vehicle is better suited for consumers who prioritize design and tech features while requiring a certain level of practicality, such as young families or stylish urban professionals. If you are looking for a mid-size SUV that blends a luxurious brand aura with everyday usability, the Velar R-Dynamic is a great choice.
