In Malaysia's C-segment SUV market, balancing personality and practicality has always been a core demand for users—they want a vehicle that is flexible enough for daily commuting but also provides adequate space for weekend getaways. The unique style inherent in the MINI brand perfectly addresses this pain point for such users. As the largest model in the MINI family, the 2018 Countryman Cooper S Sports features a 195PS 2.0T engine, a 5-seater layout, and MINI's iconic design language as its key selling points. Today, through a static experience and a dynamic test drive, let's see whether it can maintain the brand characteristics while meeting practical needs in the C-segment market.

From the exterior, the 2018 Countryman Cooper S Sports continues MINI's classic circular design elements, but its larger size adds a touch of robustness. The front features a black honeycomb grille, flanked by round LED headlights with high recognition value. The two muscular lines on the hood extend from the A-pillar to the grille, enhancing its sense of power. The body side profile is clean, with 19-inch 225/45 R19 tires fitting snugly in the wheel arches, maintaining the SUV's passability without looking bulky. The black side skirts and roof rails add a sporty touch. The rear design is relatively rounded, with circular LED taillights echoing the headlights. The dual exhausts integrated into the rear bumper and the diffuser decoration further reinforce the sporty attributes.

Stepping inside, the interior design is also full of MINI's signature elements: a circular center console paired with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and some retained physical buttons below, offering a clear operational logic. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather, with well-arranged multifunctional buttons, and comes standard with paddle shifters for added driving fun. Regarding materials, the top of the dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, and the silver trims and piano black panels in the details add a sense of refinement. In terms of features, this car stands out: standard equipment includes a HUD (Head-Up Display), keyless entry, electrically adjustable front seats (with memory function), and dual-zone automatic climate control. The rear is equipped with air vents and ISOFIX child seat anchors, enhancing practicality significantly.

Space performance is one of Countryman’s strengths. Its 4299mm length and 2670mm wheelbase place it in the upper-medium range in the C-segment SUV category. With the front seats adjusted to a proper driving position, a 175cm tall passenger in the front still enjoys a fist-sized amount of headroom. The rear legroom is equally spacious, with about two fists of knee space to the front seats. Additionally, the rear seats support 40:20:40 split folding, sliding forward and backward, and manual reclining, offering high flexibility. The trunk's standard capacity is 450 liters, and it can be expanded further by folding the rear seats, making it suitable for carrying strollers or suitcases on a daily basis.

In terms of performance, the 2018 Countryman Cooper S Sports is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 195PS, with peak torque available as low as 1350rpm. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission (Note: the configuration table does not explicitly state the number of gears but is presumed to be 8-speed AT based on common configurations for this model). At startup, the throttle response is sharp, and a light tap on the accelerator yields a noticeable pushback effect. Mid- and high-speed acceleration remains powerful, and the gearbox downshifts quickly when the accelerator is fully pressed, ensuring smooth power delivery. There are three driving modes: Sport, Standard, and Eco. In the Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, and the shifting logic becomes more aggressive, suitable for users seeking driving thrills. The Eco mode focuses more on fuel efficiency.

The handling performance is in line with MINI's consistent style: the steering is precise, with minimal play, and the road feedback is clear; the front MacPherson + rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned to be stiff, effectively controlling body roll during cornering and giving ample confidence. However, the stiff suspension transmits some vibrations to the cabin when dealing with bumpy roads, but overall it remains within an acceptable range. In terms of braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes provide ample stopping power, and the brake pedal feedback is linear, ensuring vehicle stability during emergency braking.

During the fuel consumption test, we drove 50km each on city roads and highways, with a combined fuel consumption of about 7.2L/100km, slightly above the official figure of 6.5L/100km. However, considering congestion and acceleration in real-world driving, this performance is still quite decent. As for noise control, wind noise and tire noise are noticeable at high speeds but do not affect interior conversations; engine noise becomes more noticeable during rapid acceleration but remains relatively quiet during normal cruising.

In summary, the core strengths of the 2018 MINI Countryman Cooper S Sports include its unique exterior design, rich features, spacious interior, and agile power performance. Compared to competitors like the BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA in the same segment, it offers more comprehensive features and a more competitive price (RM 240,888); additionally, MINI's distinctive brand identity appeals to many users seeking individuality.

This car suits two types of people: firstly, young families focusing on practicality, who need ample space and features but prefer not to choose overly conventional models; secondly, young individuals who pursue driving fun and uniqueness, as the 2.0T engine and precise handling meet their needs.

Overall, the 2018 MINI Countryman Cooper S Sports is a model that "has it both ways"—offering MINI's individuality and driving pleasure while also delivering the practicality of a family SUV. In the C-segment market, it is a worthwhile choice to consider.

Previously, driving a Japanese family car always felt a bit "lacking in personality." Switching to this Countryman Cooper S Sports was all about its British style + practical space. Exterior gets 4 stars: classic round headlights + floating roof are eye-catching, but the 19-inch rims feel a bit bumpy on Malaysia's rural roads (minor complaint). Interior definitely gets 5 stars! The circular central control + piano key buttons are right up my alley, and the HUD along with memory seats are super practical during Kuala Lumpur's morning traffic jams—adjust the seat to a comfortable position and check the speed without having to lower your head. On weekends, taking the family to Genting, the 2.0T turbo kicks in with torque at just 1350rpm, making uphill drives and overtaking effortless; rear seats slide and fold 4/2/4, fitting both a baby stroller and camping gear. The only small regret is the 6.5-inch central screen is a bit small, but CarPlay gets the job done. The four-year unlimited mileage warranty provides peace of mind for long trips to East Malaysia, totally worth the RM240,000 price tag!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. The mountain road was all slippery yellow mud after a rain. Engaging the S gear and stepping on the accelerator, the 2.0T turbo's torque exploded at 1350 rpm, climbing up without slipping—however, when overtaking trucks on the highway, the acceleration in the later stages felt a bit sluggish. Giving it 4 points for performance isn't unfair. The interior is fantastic, with a genuine leather steering wheel equipped with paddle shifters, and the HUD displays the speed without needing to look down. Plus, my wife can adjust the seat with memory for her position—definitely a 5-point experience. Going downhill, I encountered a sudden brake situation; the vehicle stability system immediately intervened, and the 6 airbags along with the front and rear radars gave me peace of mind. Safety deserves 5 points.

This little powerhouse never hesitates to overtake during the morning rush hour, and its 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds power is ready at a press of the pedal. Three friends in the back won't feel cramped, and the trunk can fit weekend camping gear. Just take it easy over speed bumps with those 19-inch tires—but hey, it's a MINI after all, all about style!

Last week, during a storm, I picked up my child from school. Just got in the car and was warmed up by the seat heating—the interior really has no complaints. The memory seats fit just right instantly, and the 6.5-inch screen can adjust the air conditioning effortlessly without looking. However, the red body gets muddy spots and looks dirty, so I'll deduct one point for the exterior. When climbing a hill, the turbo kicks in at 1350 rpm, and it accelerates to overtake in just 7.4 seconds without hesitation. The only downside is that the tire noise is a bit loud on rainy days, so I'll give the performance 4 points.
