In today's C-segment SUV market, consumers have increasingly higher demands for power, configuration, and cost-effectiveness. They not only require economic efficiency for daily commuting but also practical functionality for family outings. The 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive, as a yearly facelift model, not only continues the positive reputation of the X70 series but also features targeted upgrades in power and configuration. For example, the old three-cylinder 1.5T engine is replaced with a four-cylinder version, increasing horsepower to 181PS while maintaining an affordable price of RM 99,800. The primary purpose of this test drive is to verify whether these upgrades genuinely improve the user experience and whether it is competitive enough among vehicles in the same price range.

At first glance, the most noticeable change in the 2026 X70 Executive is the slightly increased body length, which has reached 4532mm—6mm longer than the 2024 model—making it appear more streamlined visually. The front still features a signature large-sized grille, adorned with chrome strips and LED headlights, giving it high recognizability. The slim daytime running lights align naturally with the upper edge of the grille, presenting a clear visual effect when lit. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, enhancing its muscular feel. The 225/65 R18 tires are proportionally balanced with the body and do not appear too thin. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a horizontal layout, with simple internal light strips that have good recognizability when illuminated. The silver skid plate on the lower rear bumper adds a touch of SUV ruggedness. The overall exterior design is not overly aggressive, making it timeless and appealing to the general public.

Opening the door, the interior layout retains Proton's consistently practical style, with the center console adopting a T-shaped design that is well-layered. In terms of materials, the door panels and upper part of the center console are wrapped in soft-touch materials, with a decent tactile feel. While not as refined as luxury models, it is reasonable for this price range. The upgrades to key configurations are quite evident. The 12.3-inch central infotainment screen is sufficiently large, clear in display, and operates smoothly, supporting common multimedia and Bluetooth functions. The fully digital instrument cluster displays real-time vehicle information, including RPM, speed, and fuel consumption, with a clean and easy-to-read interface. The multi-functional steering wheel is wrapped in leather and has a comfortable grip. The left-side buttons control multimedia and phone functions, while the right-side buttons control the instrument cluster menu, featuring clear logic and easy operation even without looking. For seat configurations, the driver's seat is equipped with 6-way electric adjustments, with enough range to accommodate drivers of different heights, making it easy to find a comfortable seating position. However, the front passenger and rear seats are manually adjustable, slightly less convenient but still sufficient for daily use.

In terms of space, the 2670mm wheelbase remains consistent with the previous model, ensuring adequate space for both front and rear passengers. After adjusting the front seat to a comfortable position, a 175cm tall passenger has approximately a fist and two fingers of headroom and ample legroom. Similarly, a 175cm passenger in the rear gets a fist of headroom and two fists of legroom. Although the middle floor has a slight bulge, it doesn't significantly affect a temporary middle passenger's comfort. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents, enabling rear passengers to quickly enjoy cool air, which is quite practical. As for storage capacity, the front central armrest box is moderately sized, able to accommodate items like a phone or wallet. The door storage compartments can hold bottled water or umbrellas. While there is no official data on the standard trunk volume, it appears to easily fit two 28-inch suitcases, meeting the needs of short family trips. The rear seats support split-folding and can be folded down to create larger storage space, which is useful for carrying oversized items.

The powertrain is a key upgrade for the 2026 X70 Executive. Its 1.5T four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 133kW (181PS) and a peak torque of 290N·m, which is an increase of 4PS and 35N·m compared to the 1.5T three-cylinder engine of the 2024 model, showcasing significant improvement in performance. During actual driving, the power response is quite active in the initial phase, and a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable power output without feeling underpowered. Once the engine reaches 2000rpm, the turbocharged power surge becomes evident, instilling confidence during acceleration and overtaking. With an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 9.8 seconds, the performance is more than adequate for daily use. The 7-speed DCT gearbox performs decently, shifting smoothly during normal driving without noticeable jerks. During rapid acceleration, its downshift speed is acceptable, though occasionally there may be slight lag, but it doesn’t hinder the overall driving experience.

In terms of handling and chassis, the combination of front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort. On flat roads, the chassis feels stable and handles minor bumps well. When encountering speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs impacts, although there may be slight residual vibrations transmitted to the cabin from the rear suspension, which remain within an acceptable range. Steering effort is moderate, with relatively precise handling, making lane changes or turns during daily driving easy. During high-speed driving, the steering wheel becomes slightly heavier, enhancing stability. This car adopts a front-wheel-drive layout, and while it lacks an all-wheel-drive system, it is perfectly capable of handling daily city roads and light unpaved surfaces; however, it is not recommended for complex off-road conditions.

The fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with an official combined fuel economy of 7.3L/100km. During the test drive, the fuel consumption was about 8.5L/100km in congested urban roads and around 6.8L/100km on highways, with an overall average of approximately 7.5L/100km. For a 1.5T SUV, these figures are above average in the same class. With a fuel tank capacity of 60L, a full tank can provide a range of about 800km, meeting the demands of long-distance trips.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise control is commendable, with wind and tire noise remaining within acceptable levels during high-speed driving, ensuring that it does not disrupt normal conversations inside the car. Engine noise is slightly more noticeable during rapid acceleration but is not overly harsh. The seat comfort is decent, with good support from the front seats that reduces fatigue during long drives. The rear seats have a moderate recline angle, offering a relaxed sitting posture. The addition of rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights enhances convenience in daily use, especially when dealing with changing weather conditions without the need for frequent manual adjustments.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive lie in its power upgrades and well-rounded features. Compared to the previous three-cylinder model, the four-cylinder engine significantly improves power output and operational smoothness. Additionally, features like the 12.3-inch central control screen and fully digital instrument panel add a modern touch of technology. Compared to rivals in the same price range, its power parameters are superior, and the equipment is relatively comprehensive, offering excellent value for money. This car is suitable for families that prioritize practicality and cost-effectiveness. It is fuel-efficient for daily commuting, has ample space for family outings, and delivers sufficient power for occasional overtaking. For consumers with a limited budget but looking to purchase a C-segment SUV, this is also a good choice.

Overall, the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive is a balanced and practical model with no particularly obvious shortcomings. The upgraded power and practical features make it more competitive in the same price market, making it a reliable choice for family cars.

Owner of 2022 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD
As the owner of the 2022 Proton X70 Executive AWD, after driving it for nearly a year, I most want to talk about its exterior and safety features. I’ll give the exterior 4 stars mainly because the design is pretty imposing — the body lines are rugged, and the front grille with its "infinite extension" looks quite premium under the Malaysian sunlight. The LED headlights are bright enough, and they offer great visibility when driving at night on Jalan Raya (main roads). However, sometimes when I park at KLCC next to other SUVs, I feel the rear design is a bit conventional, lacking some eye-catching details, so I deducted one star. That said, it’s still quite impressive to drive around on daily commutes. Safety absolutely deserves full marks! Malaysia experiences frequent rainy weather, and there are often cars changing lanes suddenly on highways. The X70’s six airbags and its electronic stability control really give me peace of mind. For instance, last time on the North-South Expressway, I encountered heavy rain, and the road was a bit slippery. When the car suddenly skidded, the stability control kicked in immediately and steadied the vehicle back onto its lane. The 360-degree camera is particularly helpful when parking in those narrow old streets in Penang, as it clearly shows even the little motorbikes by the roadside, so I never have to worry about scratches. The safety features in this Proton are truly top-notch, making it especially reassuring when driving with family.

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD
As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD, driving in Malaysia for over half a year, I genuinely feel I made the right choice! Let me start with the interior, which completely exceeded my expectations — leather seats with ventilation function, so even in the 35-degree heat of Kuala Lumpur, my back and bottom never feel sticky; the rear seats can be folded and reclined. Last time I brought my parents to Genting Highlands, they rested lying down along the way and kept praising how comfortable it was. The design of the center console is also very user-friendly, with plenty of storage compartments, making it super convenient to store small items like phones and toll cards. Giving it 5 stars is definitely not an exaggeration! The performance is even more impressive; the 1.5T turbo engine is more than enough for highways and national roads in Malaysia. Last time, when driving from Selangor to Penang, the power came immediately when I stepped on the accelerator for overtaking on the highway, and the DCT transmission shifts very smoothly without any jerks. On bumpy rural roads, the suspension absorbs the unevenness very well, ensuring a comfortable ride. The official 9.8-second acceleration, although not needed in everyday driving, is quite thrilling to experience the push-back feeling occasionally. It definitely deserves full marks for performance! In terms of safety, it’s generally good — six airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all available. Last time on Jalan Ampang during a traffic jam, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the autonomous braking system intervened in time, almost preventing a rear-end collision. It really saved the day! However, I’d deduct one point because, although there are rear side airbags, the seatbelt reminder is only for the front seats. It would have been perfect if rear seatbelt reminders were available too, especially when traveling with family for added peace of mind. Overall, for a car of this price, it's really suitable for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2021 Proton X70 SE
As the owner of a 2021 Proton X70 SE who has been driving in Malaysia for almost two years, I have some say when it comes to its appearance and performance. Let me start with the appearance. Giving it 4 stars is because the overall look is indeed quite impressive. The LED headlights and 19-inch wheels hold their own even when parked in front of Pavilion Mall in KL (Kuala Lumpur) alongside Japanese SUVs. However, perhaps my aesthetic standards are a bit high? I always feel that the design of the rear of the car is overly rounded, lacking a sporty feel. If the taillights were sharper, it would be perfect, so I deducted a point. But as for performance, I have to give it full marks! On the highways in Malaysia, it's common to encounter cars suddenly changing lanes, and the 1.8T turbo of the X70 SE delivers maximum torque at 1750 rpm, making acceleration particularly responsive. Especially when driving from Ipoh to Penang on the North-South Expressway, overtaking those large trucks is effortless. Additionally, the DCT gearbox shifts gears very smoothly, and during traffic jams (like during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang), there is no noticeable jerking, making it very comfortable to drive. Last time when I took my family to Genting Highlands, the power was more than sufficient for the uphill journey, without feeling "sluggish" at all. This part is really satisfying!

Owner of 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Standard
As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 Standard, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost two months, so here's my honest review! First, let’s talk about the performance, it truly deserves full marks! The 1.5T turbocharged engine delivers 255 Nm of torque at just 1500 rpm, making it super agile during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour; a light press on the accelerator allows quick repositioning in traffic. Last week, I drove to Genting Highlands, and the power never faltered even while climbing hills. The 7-speed DCT shifts smoothly without any jolting. With 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.8 seconds, overtaking on the highway feels very confident. Fuel consumption is also surprising — about 8L in the city with air conditioning, and as low as 6.5L on the highway, which is even better than the official 7.3L figure. This is great for Malaysian fuel prices. The safety features must be praised! Six airbags, ESP, and hill-start assist all come standard. Last time in Penang, when the road was slippery due to rain, the stability control system kicked in immediately when I nearly slid, bringing the car back steadily. It gave me a fright but also great peace of mind. The reverse sensors are super practical for parking in Kuala Lumpur's narrow streets, making it less stressful for new drivers to avoid scratches. The interior gets 4 stars. The overall craftsmanship is decent, the 12.3-inch infotainment screen is clear and smooth, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is more than sufficient for Malaysia’s hot weather. However, the Standard variant has manual seat adjustment, which is a bit cumbersome, and there’s quite a bit of plastic, especially on the lower door panels, which feels slightly less premium. Adding some more soft-touch materials would make it perfect. All in all, at a price of RM98k, the features you get make it highly value for money. It’s absolutely sufficient for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD
As the owner of the 2020 Proton X70 1.8 Standard 2WD, after driving for nearly two years, I am overall quite satisfied considering Malaysia's road conditions. For safety, I’d rate it 4 stars. After all, it comes equipped with 6 airbags, a stability control system, and other features. Last time in George Town, Penang, I encountered an emergency brake situation, and the car stayed stable without skidding. The reversing radar and rear camera were also very helpful when parking in the narrow alleys of Kuala Lumpur. The only slight downside is the lack of autonomous emergency braking, which would have made me feel even more secure. In terms of performance, I’d also give it 4 stars. The 1.8T turbo kicks in at 1750rpm, giving me confidence when overtaking on the North-South Expressway. The DCT gearbox shifts quite smoothly. However, in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, there’s occasionally some jerking at low speeds, and at high speeds beyond 120km/h, acceleration is less robust. Fuel consumption is about 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official 7.8L, but it’s good for an SUV. For appearance, I’d rate it 4 stars. The front grille with the “Infinite Weave” design is very distinctive. The LED daytime running lights are especially noticeable in Malaysia’s strong sunlight. The 17-inch wheels are well-proportioned to the vehicle body. The only small regret is with the halogen headlights, which are somewhat limited in brightness during night driving. Fully LED lights would have made it both more attractive and more practical. All in all, being able to get such a car at this price, the value for money is indeed very high!
