2019 Audi A3 Sedan 1.4 TFSI Review

In Malaysia's C-segment sedan market, German brands have always held a prominent position due to their craftsmanship and driving dynamics. When consumers choose this type of vehicle, they often value the sense of quality brought by the brand and also have clear requirements for fuel economy and daily practicality. The 2019 Audi A3 Sedan 1.4 TFSI, as a classic model in this segment, highlights balanced power output, solid chassis performance, and Audi's signature digital cockpit configuration. This is also the focus of our test drive — whether it can meet the dual demands of driving pleasure and family use in daily commuting as well as occasional long-distance driving.
In terms of exterior design, this A3 Sedan continues Audi's family-oriented minimalist design style, with smooth and dynamic overall lines. At the front, the hexagonal grille, paired with horizontal chrome strips, is highly recognizable; the LED headlights on both sides are sharp in shape with exquisitely designed internal light strips, offering a striking visual effect when illuminated. Along the car's side, a waistline stretches from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 18-inch multi-spoke wheels, making the car's proportions look compact yet dynamic. The rear design is relatively simple, featuring Audi’s classic "arrow-shaped" LED taillight strips that echo the design of the front headlights. The hidden exhaust layout under the rear bumper maintains the overall sense of elegance.
Sitting inside, the materials and workmanship of the interior reflect Audi’s consistent standards. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, and the detailed stitching enhances the sense of luxury. The instrument panel is a fully digital display with clear visuals and information-rich content, providing various interface styles that change based on the driving mode. The center console is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen that features a straightforward operating logic and responds relatively quickly. Regarding the seats, the front row uses a 4-way electric adjustment design, and the cushioning is soft yet supportive, making it comfortable even for long periods of sitting. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, which can flexibly expand the trunk space. In terms of storage capacity, the door panels, central armrest box, and front cup holders offer practical storage spaces for daily essentials such as phones and water bottles. As for dimensions, the car measures 4458mm in length, 1796mm in width, 1416mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2637mm. For a passenger with a height of 175cm, there’s about a two-fist distance between their knees and the front seat, and the headroom is also relatively spacious, which adequately meets the needs of family daily use.
In terms of the powertrain, the 1.4T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 150PS and reaches its peak torque between 1500-3500rpm, paired with a DCT transmission. During startup, the throttle response is light and the low-end torque is abundant, allowing the car to easily keep up in congested urban traffic. During acceleration, the gear shifts are smooth with almost no noticeable jerks. When the accelerator is pressed harder during overtaking, the power delivery remains linear and powerful, achieving an official 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.2 seconds, positioning it at an upper-middle level within its class. As for driving modes, the Economy Mode moderates the throttle response, making it more suitable for daily commuting. In contrast, Sport Mode raises the engine speed for more direct power output, catering to users who enjoy driving. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal play, and the body remains stable during cornering, effectively limiting body roll. The suspension adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent setup, tuned for firmness. It can effectively filter out most bumps on uneven roads while retaining a certain level of road feedback, striking a balance between comfort and handling.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined consumption is 4.9L/100km. During our test drive, which was mainly on city roads with occasional highway stretches, the actual measured fuel consumption was about 5.6L/100km, which is in line with expectations. As for noise control, wind and road noise are well suppressed during high-speed driving, and in-car conversations are hardly affected; engine noise slightly enters the cabin during acceleration but doesn't feel abrupt. In terms of braking performance, the brake pedal has a moderate stroke, the braking force output is linear, and the vehicle remains stable during emergency braking, providing sufficient confidence.
Overall, the 2019 Audi A3 Sedan 1.4 TFSI's core advantage lies in its balanced product strength — solid chassis tuning, reliable power performance, practical space design, and Audi's signature digital configuration. Compared to its competitors in the same class, its interior quality and driving experience are more advantageous, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty policy further enhances its cost-performance ratio. This car is suitable for consumers who value brand quality, pursue driving texture, and need to cater to daily family use. Whether for daily commuting or short weekend trips, it can meet the needs well. If you are looking for a C-segment sedan that combines luxury with practicality, this A3 Sedan is worth considering.
