Specs

The Malaysia C-segment sedan market has always been a focal point for competition among household and young consumer groups. Consumers demand practicality for daily commuting, while also hoping for individualized design and smart features. The 2025 Toyota Corolla GR Sport was launched on January 5 this year, priced at RM 149,800, which is RM 3,000 less than the 2023 GR Sport while upgrading its core configurations. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this new car can satisfy local consumers' needs for cost-effectiveness and intelligent experience while maintaining its sporty genes.

Approaching the new car, the most intuitive impression is its sporty exterior design. The body length is 4635mm, 5mm longer than the standard Corolla, combined with a low-profile stance, making it appear more slender visually. The front end features a blacked-out honeycomb grille paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides. The daytime running lights extend in an L-shaped design to the edges of the grille, providing high recognition. Along the side of the car, 18-inch multi-spoke blacked-out rims paired with 225/40 R18 tires, combined with slightly protruding wheel arch lines, enhance the sense of power. A chrome garnish running along the bottom edge of the windows and the GR Sport exclusive badge on the side skirts further emphasize the sporty attributes. At the rear, the blacked-out LED tail light cluster incorporates a through-type design element, complemented by a small spoiler and a dual exhaust layout, giving the overall style a youthful and aggressive character.

Opening the door, the interior adopts black as the main color tone, with red stitching added on the seats and door panels to enhance the sporty atmosphere. The center console layout is simple, featuring a 10-inch capacitive touchscreen in the center, which is larger than the 9-inch screen in the 2023 GR Sport. The operation smoothness and display clarity have both improved. In front of the driver is a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster that supports multiple display modes, showing information such as navigation, fuel consumption, and driver assistance system status in real-time. In terms of configuration, the new car comes standard with keyless entry, push-button start, 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and rear air vents, providing sufficient convenience for everyday use. Storage space performance is average, with the front center armrest box and door storage compartments able to hold items such as phones and water bottles. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, allowing storage of larger luggage when folded down.

In terms of space, the 2700mm wheelbase remains the same as the previous version. The front row offers ample room, with a passenger of 175cm height still having a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom is about two fists, with headroom about one fist, making it suitable for daily family use. The middle section of the rear floor has a slight bump, but it does not affect short-distance comfort for the middle passenger. The trunk capacity isn’t specifically indicated, but practical tests show it can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases, meeting everyday household needs for practicality.

For power, the new car is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum output of 103kW (139PS) and a peak torque of 172N·m, paired with a 10-speed CVT transmission, offering 3 more simulated gear ratios compared to the 7-speed CVT in the 2023 model. During daily driving, the throttle response is smooth at startup, and the low RPM range provides sufficient power for urban commuting. When stepping on the accelerator deeply, the engine speed rises above 4000rpm, significantly releasing torque and providing good power reserves for overtaking. When switching to sport mode, the transmission responds faster with simulated shifting, and along with the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, it can create some fun in driving. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone independent suspension. The tuning is stiffer compared to the standard model, effectively controlling body roll through corners and maintaining stability at high speeds. However, when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, vibrations are filtered slightly less effectively, resulting in mild discomfort for rear passengers.

In terms of fuel consumption, this test drive covered both urban congestion and highway segments, with combined fuel consumption at approximately 7.5L/100km, which is close to the official figures. For a 1.8L displacement family car, this performance is considered average within the same class. Noise control performance is good, with wind and tire noise at acceptable levels during high-speed driving, not affecting conversations inside the car.

In terms of safety features, the new car is equipped as standard with 7 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, as well as active safety systems such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and lane change assist. A 360-degree panoramic view also enhances parking convenience, and the overall safety performance meets mainstream standards for the C-segment.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Corolla GR Sport lie in its cost-effectiveness and configuration upgrades. Compared with the 2023 model, it offers a lower price while adding a 10-inch central control screen and a 10-speed CVT, significantly enhancing its competitiveness. Compared to the Honda Civic 1.5T in the same class, while the power parameters are slightly weaker, the price is lower and the configuration is more comprehensive, making it suitable for consumers who value practicality and cost-effectiveness. This car is suitable for both young professionals who prioritize sporty looks and families requiring daily commuting and short trips, making it a C-segment option that balances personality and practicality.

In conclusion, the 2025 Toyota Corolla GR Sport, through price reduction and configuration upgrades, continues to retain its sporty genes while further catering to local consumer demands. If you are looking for a family sedan with a sporty appearance, sufficient features, and a reasonable price, this car is worth considering.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla 1.8G
As the owner of the 2023 Corolla 1.8G, after driving around Kuala Lumpur city and the suburban areas of Selangor for three months, I am most satisfied with its performance and safety features! First, let's talk about its performance. The road conditions in Malaysia are really complex — traffic jams during rush hour in the city where you can hardly move, and high-speed accelerations needed for overtaking on suburban highways. This 1.8L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT transmission is especially smooth when following traffic at low speeds, completely free of jerking; on the North-South Expressway, pressing the accelerator deeply makes the RPM climb very linearly, and the power output during overtaking is stable. Even with five people and the air conditioning on, it doesn’t feel underpowered. The suspension system was the biggest surprise; the rear double-wishbone setup absorbs bumps superbly. Whether I am driving on patched pothole roads or highway ramps, the car body remains very stable, unlike my previous car where the jolting would make passengers uncomfortable. In terms of safety, it gives me peace of mind! In Kuala Lumpur, there are often motorcycles that suddenly dart out — the automatic braking system has already saved me twice — once when the car ahead braked suddenly, and another time when a motorcycle abruptly changed lanes. Each time, the system reacted quickly by alerting me and automatically slowing down. The 360-degree camera system is also excellent; when parking in the narrow alleys of Petaling Street, I can even clearly see the small gaps next to the curbs, making it easy for even new drivers to park. With 7 airbags and seatbelt reminders for all passengers, taking my family out truly feels safe and reassuring. In summary, this car is perfectly suited for Malaysian driving conditions. It offers practical performance and robust safety features that give great confidence. Buying it is definitely worth it!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla 1.8G
As the owner of a 2023 Corolla 1.8G, after three months of driving, I love it more and more every time I see it! Starting with the exterior, the lines of this generation of Corolla are totally my style – the large front grille paired with LED headlights grab attention even when stuck in traffic in KL. The small rear spoiler and dual exhausts (even though they're decorative) add a sporty vibe. Every time I park it at Jaya Grocer, I can't help but take another look. A perfect 5/5 rating! The interior is an even bigger surprise, and stepping inside makes it feel worth every penny. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel is super clear, with navigation and fuel consumption displayed at a glance. The 9-inch central control screen is very responsive, and even CarPlay works seamlessly. The most comfortable feature is the 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat with lumbar support – driving on the North-South Expressway for an hour daily doesn't make me feel back pain. The rear seats are spacious enough; when I took my parents to Genting Highlands over the weekend, they said sitting for three hours didn't feel cramped. The dual-zone air conditioning and rear vents are lifesavers in Malaysia's hot weather. The interior is a definite 5/5! As for safety, I'd rate it 4/5 because overall, it's very stable, but there’s room for improvement in the smaller details. With 7 airbags, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist as standard features, I almost rear-ended another car on the LDP highway in PJ last time, but the emergency braking system intervened and stopped the car just in time – it really gave me a fright! However, the ACC can be a bit "nervous" when following cars at low speed and may brake suddenly, but you get used to it. Overall, the safety features are comprehensive, and it's very reassuring for daily driving. The one-point deduction is just because I hope the calibration can be a bit more refined.

Owner of 2020 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8E
As the owner of the 2020 Corolla Altis 1.8E, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years. In terms of safety and appearance, I think they both deserve a score of 4 out of 5, which is relatively satisfactory. Let's start with safety. The traffic jams during rush hour in Kuala Lumpur are really frustrating. Last time on the LDP highway, I was following another car too closely and almost rear-ended it. The car's pre-collision system suddenly beeped and even applied the brakes for me. Although it didn't come to a complete stop, it at least reduced the speed, so it was just a minor scratch without any major incident. When driving my family to Genting Highlands, where the mountain roads have many curves, the vehicle stability control system was quite responsive, making the turns feel stable and not floaty. However, a friend once mentioned while sitting in the back seat that the rear safety airbag badge is not very noticeable. It would be better if it were more prominent, so I’m deducting one point and giving safety a 4. As for the appearance, this car’s design is quite attractive for a C-segment vehicle. The LED daytime running lights are especially striking during rainy days in Penang, making my car more noticeable to others. The body lines are also smooth, and when the car is parked in my apartment complex, my neighbors often say it looks better than the older models. However, one small regret is that the chrome trim on the front grille tends to easily show fingerprints. Even after washing the car, it looks dirty again within a few days and needs frequent cleaning. If this could be improved, it would be perfect. So, I’ll also give the appearance a 4.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla 1.8G
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Corolla 1.8G, after almost half a year of driving in Malaysia, I give the interior and exterior a 4 out of 5. Overall, I’m quite satisfied. Starting with the exterior, the design of the Corolla is considered timeless in the C-Segment. The large trapezoidal front grille, paired with sharp LED headlights, gives it high recognizability on the road—especially during Kuala Lumpur’s rush hour traffic. Looking at the silhouette of my car through the rearview mirror doesn't make it seem “plain” like some other cars in the same segment. The body lines are smooth and streamlined, making the car appear elongated when viewed from the side. Even when parked in the relatively small parking lots of my residential area, it doesn't look bulky, which is quite friendly for the compact parking spaces common in Malaysia. However, one downside is that the paint is slightly thin. When I was driving along the coastal road in Penang, a small stone chipped a tiny part of the paint. Although it’s not noticeable, I still felt a little heartache—if only the paint were thicker, it would be perfect. As for the interior, Toyota has indeed put in some effort this time. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 9-inch central control screen are seamlessly connected, creating a strong tech vibe—every time I start the car, the animation on the instrument cluster is very refined. The navigation information is also clearly displayed, which is especially handy when driving on the multi-exit highways in Selangor. The seats are made of leather, and the driver’s seat even comes with 8-way power adjustment and lumbar support. As someone who drives 1 hour to and from work daily, I don’t feel tired even after sitting for long. However, the slight protrusion on the middle section of the rear floor is a bit of an inconvenience. While it doesn’t affect seating, having a completely flat floor would make it more comfortable when taking three friends to Genting Highlands. Additionally, there’s a good amount of soft-touch materials in the interior, making it feel nice to the touch. But I do feel that there are slightly too few physical buttons below the central control screen—sometimes, I have to look down at the screen to adjust the air conditioning. It would have been better if a few commonly used physical buttons were retained. Overall, the exterior and interior of the Corolla 1.8G qualify as an “excellent performer” in its price range. Although it has minor flaws, they don’t diminish my liking for it. The 4 out of 5 score is well-deserved!

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla GR Sport
As the owner of the 2025 Corolla GR Sport, after driving it for almost three months, I genuinely feel that it was worth every penny! Let's talk about safety first—on Malaysian highways, it's common to encounter vehicles suddenly changing lanes. Its forward collision warning and lane departure alert respond super quickly. Last time on the North-South Expressway, I was nearly cut off by a truck suddenly changing lanes, and the system immediately braked and slowed down for me. It gave me quite a scare, but I was unharmed. With 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera, parking in narrow alleys in Kuala Lumpur feels much safer—I no longer worry about scratching nearby motorcycles. The interior is also amazing! The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 10-inch center control screen heighten the tech feel, and the materials are genuinely high-quality. Every touchable part is soft-touch wrapped. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is a lifesaver in Malaysia's scorching weather, and the rear seats even have independent air vents. When I have family and friends on board, everyone feels comfortable. The performance is even more of a pleasant surprise. Although it comes with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, paired with a CVT gearbox, the power delivery is super smooth. Following traffic in city jam is really easy, and it doesn't lack acceleration power on highways. The chassis tuning is extremely stable, with minimal body roll during cornering. Even on Malaysia's rugged rural roads full of potholes, the shock absorption is pretty good, making the ride not uncomfortable. Overall, I give full marks in these three aspects and would recommend this car to anyone considering a family car in Malaysia!
