Specs

In Malaysia's premium mid-size SUV market, consumers have increasingly high demands for design recognizability, a rich array of features, and driving quality. As a representative in the coupe SUV segment, the 2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport, with its M Sport Package-enhanced exterior, high-spec intelligent configuration, and all-wheel drive system, has always been a focal point for users seeking a balance between individuality and practicality. This time, we got the actual vehicle to test whether its design truly balances aesthetics and functionality, whether its performance and handling align with BMW's sporty DNA, and how well it performs in terms of daily usability and comfort.

Starting with the exterior, the overall style of this X4 leans toward a sporty coupe. The flowing fastback lines slope down from the B-pillar, paired with the front bumper from the M Sport package, a large air intake grille, and sharp aerodynamic vents on both sides, giving the front a very aggressive look. Along the sides, the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (front tires 245/45 R20, rear tires 275/40 R20) enhance the visual center of gravity. The waistline runs from the front to the rear, complementing the muscular lines of the rear fenders, which adds a sense of power. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights adopt a smoked finish, matched with a rear diffuser and dual exhaust outlets, further intensifying the sporty attributes. In terms of lighting, the full-LED headlights come with automatic activation and daytime running lights, while front and rear fog lights are also standard. When illuminated at night, they offer high recognizability.

Stepping inside, the overall layout is driver-centric, with the center console tilted towards the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the upper part of the center console and the inside of the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metal trim and an M Sport steering wheel, achieving a good balance of luxury and sporty ambiance. On the feature side, the 10.25-inch touchscreen center console supports gesture control and has a smooth interface. The fully digital instrument cluster displays clear information and allows for theme switching. Combined with HUD head-up digital display, drivers can access speed, navigation, and other information without needing to look down. The seats are made of genuine leather with electric adjustment capabilities for the front seats; the driver's seat also has a memory function. The seats offer moderate support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats can fold in a 40:20:40 split configuration, expanding the trunk space from 525L to a larger capacity, suitable for storing baby strollers or suitcases with ease. The air conditioning system features dual-zone automatic climate control, with independent vents for the rear, and the front row is also equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, which significantly enhances practicality.

Regarding space performance, the vehicle dimensions are 4752mm x 1918mm x 1623mm, with a wheelbase of 2864mm. For a passenger around 175cm tall, the front row provides a headroom of about one fist and two fingers, along with ample legroom. The rear headroom is slightly compromised due to the fastback design, leaving about three fingers' worth of space for a 175cm passenger, while the legroom offers about two fists, making it not overly cramped overall. As for storage, the door storage slots can hold two water bottles, the depth of the center armrest box is adequate, and there’s a wireless charging panel in the front row, making it convenient to store small daily items.

In terms of performance, it is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum output of 255PS and a peak torque of 350N·m (achieved as low as 1450rpm), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the power response in the initial phase is enthusiastic, and a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.3 seconds ranks among the top in its class. Switching to sport mode makes the transmission logic more aggressive with faster downshifts. When overtaking and stomping hard on the accelerator, the transmission quickly downshifts two gears, delivering direct power output. For everyday use, the comfort mode suffices, offering a smooth power delivery suitable for urban commuting.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with very little play. It is light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, aligning with BMW's tuning style. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension. With the enhancement of the M Sport package, the suspension is tuned on the firmer side, but it quickly filters out vibrations over speed bumps or uneven roads, leaving no significant residual vibration. The balance between comfort and support is well-maintained. While cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the all-wheel-drive system distributes power to the front and rear wheels, providing sufficient grip and giving the driver enough confidence. As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km. In our actual tests, city driving was about 9.2L/100km, and highway driving was about 6.8L/100km, which meets the expectations for a 2.0T midsize SUV.

In terms of driving comfort, the insulation performance is quite good. At a speed of 120km/h, wind noise and tire noise are within an acceptable range, and engine noise becomes noticeable only during hard acceleration. The seats provide excellent support and wraparound comfort, ensuring that your back won't feel sore even during long drives. Regarding energy recovery, this car does not have a noticeable drag effect, and the driving experience is close to that of a fuel-powered vehicle, making it easy for new drivers to adapt.

To sum up, the core advantages of the 2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport lie in its sporty coupe-styled design, a wealth of intelligent features (such as a HUD, fully digital instrument cluster, and Harman Kardon audio system), and a balanced combination of handling and comfort. Compared to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe or Audi Q5 Sportback, its power response is more aggressive, its handling is closer to that of a sedan, and its level of configuration is not inferior.

This car is ideal for those who want the practicality of an SUV but also pursue the coupe-style appearance and sporty driving experience, such as young families aged 30-40 or professionals who enjoy weekend road trips. It meets comfort demands for daily commuting while also providing ample driving pleasure on mountain roads or highways.

In conclusion, the 2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport is a luxury coupe SUV that balances personality, features, and performance. Although the rear headroom is affected by the sloping roofline, its overall performance is well-balanced, making it a worthy option among its competitors.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we started the mountain road, we encountered a sudden downpour. The torque burst at 1450 rpm from the 2.0T turbo made acceleration on the uphill effortless, and xDrive maintained excellent stability on slippery bends. However, family members in the back seat mentioned that the shock absorption felt a bit stiff when going over speed bumps, possibly due to the 20-inch tires. On the way back, we encountered traffic jams, and the HUD and Harman Kardon sound system did help alleviate some of the frustration. In terms of safety, there was a near rear-end collision in downtown Kuala Lumpur last week, but the automatic braking intervened in time. The six airbags and lane departure warning also made long-distance driving more reassuring, although the automatic parking sometimes had difficulty recognizing narrow alleys in Malaysian villages. Overall, performance and safety are adequate for daily use, but there’s still room for improvement in some details.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we started on the mountain road, a sudden rain came, making the road as slippery as if it had been oiled. Switching to Sport mode, the 2.0T turbocharged engine unleashed its torque at 1450rpm, pushing the car steadily uphill, with the xDrive all-wheel-drive gripping the road firmly. While cornering, the body barely leaned. The M package's blacked-out wheels paired with 20-inch tires kicked up splashes of mud onto the matte finish, making it look a bit dirty, but the fastback lines still stood out amidst the misty mountain scenery. Upon arriving at the orchard, I opened the trunk to load durians. The 525L capacity just fit three boxes, and with the rear seats folded down in a 4/2/4 split, we could even fit a folding stroller. On the way back, while stuck in traffic, the 16-speaker Harman Kardon system played Malaysian folk songs, the HUD displayed the speed, and the ventilated seats helped dissipate the humidity, making the situation less bothersome. However, the fastback design meant my 180cm-tall cousin in the back seat had to lower his head slightly, or else his head would hit the roof – which is the reason I’d deduct 1 point from the exterior design.

Previously, driving Japanese SUVs always felt like something was missing, but switching to this X4 M Sport finally feels just right! During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 2.0T low torque is sufficient, and just a light touch on the accelerator keeps up with traffic. The xDrive system is also very stable on rainy and slippery roads. On weekends driving through the winding roads of Genting Highlands, the steering wheel feels precise, and there’s minimal body roll when cornering. It feels much more agile than my friend’s GLC Coupe. The interior features Harman Kardon sound system with a 10.25-inch screen, making listening to music during traffic jams extremely enjoyable. However, the rear headroom feels a bit tight for friends who are 180 cm tall, and the price of 370,000 MYR is on the expensive side. But the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty is very reassuring. The safety configurations are complete, except for the lack of a knee airbag, so deducting 1 point is fair. Overall, I’m very satisfied and have no regrets about buying it!

Previously drove a Honda CR-V, switched to the X4 completely because its coupe-style design totally hit the spot! The M Sport package turns heads on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, and the Harman Kardon sound system paired with the panoramic sunroof in the interior is just perfect. Taking the family to Genting Highlands for the weekend, listening to music with the air conditioning on, feels super comfortable. During morning rush hour traffic, the 2.0T turbo kicks out torque at just 1450 rpm, making following traffic a breeze, and the xDrive keeps it stable on waterlogged roads during rainy days. The only downside is that the rear headroom is a bit tight compared to the CR-V, especially for someone 180cm tall sitting for a long time, but that's typical of coupe-style cars. At 370,000 MYR, it’s not cheap, but with 5 years of unlimited mileage warranty + a fully digital instrument cluster + HUD, it's worth it!
