Specs

The two-door convertible has always been a niche but attractive choice in the Malaysian market—it’s not only a personalized vehicle for daily commuting but also meets the need for weekend getaways. The 2019 BMW Z4 sDrive30i M Sport targets this group of users, with its core selling points being the power output of its 2.0T turbocharged engine, precise rear-wheel-drive handling, and BMW's signature driving experience. This test drive will cover the car's performance from static experience to dynamic performance, providing target users with a clear reference on whether it balances "everyday practicality" and "sports car fun".

In terms of appearance, the Z4 sDrive30i M Sport retains the sporty genes of BMW sports cars. The overall lines are smooth, with the front end featuring a large double kidney grille, paired with sharp LED headlights for high recognition; the hood's raised lines enhance its sense of power. The car's side profile is well-proportioned, and the combination of 225/45 R18 front tires with 255/40 R18 rear tires ensures grip and enhances its athletic stance. The rear design is simple, with LED taillights echoing the front, and a dual-exhaust layout further underscores its performance positioning. The convertible top adopts a soft-top design, with smooth operation, allowing drivers and passengers to fully enjoy Malaysia's outdoor scenery when fully opened.

Inside, the interior design focuses on the driver, with the dashboard angled toward the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, while there’s not an overwhelming use of luxurious materials, the combination of soft-touch coverings and piano black trim fits its sporty positioning. Key features include a 10.25-inch touch control central display with smooth responsiveness, supporting BMW’s iDrive system; the fully digital instrument cluster displays extensive vehicle information, including power output, fuel consumption, and other data. The seats have a typical sports design, with electric adjustment for both the driver and front passenger seats, as well as a memory function for the driver’s seat. The seats offer good support and remain comfortable even during long drives. In terms of storage, the front cup holders and center armrest box are sufficient for storing small items, while the 280L trunk can accommodate two carry-on suitcases, which is relatively practical for a sports car.

The Z4’s dynamic performance is its core strength. The 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 262PS, with peak torque kicking in as early as 1550 rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds according to official figures. In real-world driving, the car accelerates effortlessly, with a responsive throttle and ample reserve power in the mid-to-late range. For overtaking, simply press the accelerator deeply, and the power will respond promptly, providing a strong sense of thrust. When switched to sport mode, the gearbox becomes more aggressive in its shifting logic, maintaining higher revs and further enhancing the driving fun.

In terms of handling, the rear-wheel-drive layout combined with precise steering calibration allows the Z4 to perform excellently in corners. The steering is accurate with minimal slack, and body roll is well-controlled during turns. The suspension system is firm but elastic, effectively filtering most minor road bumps while retaining sufficient road feel. For daily driving on Malaysian city roads, the comfort level is not too compromised when dealing with speed bumps or uneven road surfaces. Fuel consumption is average, at approximately 7.5L/100km in mixed driving conditions, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.5L. However, considering its power output, this result is acceptable.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise control is well-managed. Even at high speeds, wind noise and tire noise remain within an acceptable range. The seats balance both support and wraparound comfort, ensuring no significant fatigue during long drives. The Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system delivers excellent sound quality, maintaining a clear soundstage even when the convertible is open. In terms of safety features, it comes standard with lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and other active safety systems, along with 4 airbags, ensuring daily driving safety.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 BMW Z4 sDrive30i M Sport lies in its "balance" — it offers the power and driving fun of a sports car while retaining the practicality needed for daily commuting. Compared to the Porsche 718 Boxster in the same segment, the Z4 is more affordable and better equipped; while compared to entry-level sports cars like the Toyota 86, the Z4 offers greater brand value and a sense of luxury. This car is suitable for those who want a unique ride without compromising on daily practicality, such as urban young professionals or sports car enthusiasts with a certain economic foundation. If you're looking for a two-door convertible sports car that balances "fun" and "practicality," the Z4 sDrive30i M Sport is worth considering.

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered a heavy rainstorm and drove the Z4 on a mountain road. The 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering torque at 1550 RPM made overtaking effortless, and the rear-wheel drive's stability on slippery corners was better than expected. However, after the hardtop of this two-door coupe was closed, the bass of the Harman Kardon audio system was slightly drowned out by the sound of the rain. Speaking of the exterior, the M Sport package's side skirt did look rather dirty after being splattered with mud on a rainy day, so deducting 1 point for this is justifiable. But the automatic brake once stopped me in heavy traffic, and the safety features deserve full marks for providing peace of mind.

Previously drove the F30 3 Series which was too "family-oriented," so I switched to the Z4 purely for the convertible sports car vibe—M Sport package's kidney grille + short front overhang, parking at Kuala Lumpur's Pavilion attracts full attention, and its exterior deserves a perfect 5-star rating, no doubt. During morning rush hour on the LDP highway, the 2.0T turbo hits peak torque at 1550 rpm, more nimble in tight gaps compared to the same-level Boxster, and rear-wheel drive stays stable around corners. Weekend trip with the wife to Penang, top down enjoying the west coast breeze, Harman Kardon sound quality is amazing, but the back seats? Don’t even think about it; placing a carry-on in the passenger seat already fills up the space. Interior features a fully digital dashboard + touch screen with enough tech vibes, but unfortunately, the Alcantara fabric is prone to trapping coconut milk stains (don’t ask how I know this). 470,000 MYR isn’t cheap, but with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, it's reassuring even for East Malaysia long-distance drives—worth it!

As a 2019 Z4 sDrive30i owner, driving in Malaysia for three years, I genuinely feel that this small roadster is just right. Previously, I drove a regular family car, but I switched to the Z4 for its rear-wheel-drive handling—driving up Genting Highlands on weekends, the steering is so precise that it feels like an extension of your hand. The 2.0T turbo delivers torque at just 1550rpm, overtaking is effortless and smooth, and I’d rate its performance a solid 4 out of 5. The safety features are packed to the max. On the highway, lane departure warning saved me once when I was distracted, which deserves a 5-star rating. The interior gets a 4 mainly because there are quite a few plastic parts, but the Harman Kardon sound system is phenomenal. Driving along the coastal road with the top down, accompanied by sea breeze and music, is an unbeatable experience. As for the downsides, the 280L trunk looks spacious, but it’s full after fitting a carry-on suitcase. During rush hour, I’m hesitant to open the roof fearing exhaust fumes, but when the roof is closed, it feels slightly stuffy. That said, given the tropical climate in Malaysia, being able to cruise around with the top down and feel the breeze, the Z4 truly is a source of happiness!

Having driven the Z4 30i for nearly five years, the best part is weaving through traffic during morning rush hours—rear-wheel drive + 262-horsepower turbo, allowing instant response for lane changing and overtaking. A tap on the paddle shifter makes even being stuck in traffic fun. However, with just two doors and two seats, taking friends out on weekends means one person has to settle for the passenger seat. But the full suite of safety features, including lane departure warning and automatic braking, ensures peace of mind even on rainy days.

Previously, I drove an ordinary household sedan, and in comparison, the rear-wheel-drive handling of the Z4 is just on point! Drove along the East Coast Highway over the weekend, and the 2.0T turbocharged engine unleashes torque at just 1550 rpm, making overtaking clean and effortless. The 5.4-second 0-100 km/h acceleration gives such a thrilling push-back feeling that even the sea breeze couldn't catch up. The exterior with the M Sport package is striking, and the LED headlights offer maximum recognition in the bustling evening traffic of Kuala Lumpur. Safety features are comprehensive, with the lane departure warning system helping me avoid several distractions on the causeway from Johor Bahru to Singapore. A minor drawback is the 280L trunk, which can't fit all the gear for a family camping trip, but for a two-door sports car, what more can you ask for? The full LCD instrument panel and Harman Kardon sound system make even traffic jams less annoying when listening to music. The 5-year unlimited mileage warranty makes car maintenance in Malaysia worry-free as well.
