2019 Geely Emgrand GT 3.5-6AT Review

As the demand for spacious and powerful vehicles in the mid-size sedan (B-segment) market continues to grow, many brands have begun introducing products that balance family-oriented practicality with driving experience in this niche. The 2019 Geely Emgrand GT 3.5L 6AT, as one of the rare naturally aspirated large-displacement models in this segment, attracted considerable attention from consumers seeking spacious interiors and smooth power delivery upon its release, thanks to its 244 horsepower output and nearly 2.9-meter wheelbase. This time, we got the actual car to test whether its space truly meets family needs, whether the large-displacement naturally aspirated engine lives up to expectations in terms of performance, and how the overall driving experience fares in daily use.
In terms of body dimensions, the Emgrand GT's length of 4956mm, width of 1861mm, and wheelbase of 2850mm place it at the upper mainstream level in the mid-size sedan segment. Its exterior design adopts a mature and stable style, featuring a large straight waterfall grille at the front, complemented by sharp LED headlights for a high degree of recognition. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with a waistline stretching from the front fenders to the rear, giving the body a more elongated appearance. The rear adopts a through-type taillight design, which provides an impressive visual effect when illuminated, while the addition of chrome trims enhances the sense of sophistication. The lighting system comes standard with all-LED light sources across the range, including headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights. The brightness and range when illuminated at night meet everyday usage requirements.
Once inside the car, the interior features a predominantly black color scheme, paired with silver trims and soft materials that place the overall texture slightly above average for its class. The center console has a simple layout, with a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen positioned in the center, supporting CarPlay and CarLife connectivity with good operational smoothness. Below the touchscreen, some physical buttons have been retained for ease of blind operation while driving. In terms of configuration, this model is equipped with a leather multi-function steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, electrically adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger, automatic temperature-controlled air conditioning, and rear air vents, meeting daily convenience needs. Notably, the seats are wrapped in leather, with soft padding and good support, making long rides less fatiguing.
Space is one of the core advantages of the Emgrand GT. With the front seats adjusted to a comfortable position, a 180cm tall person has a headroom clearance of one fist and two fingers; rear legroom measures over two fists, with headroom around one fist. Even with three adults seated in the rear, the space does not feel overly cramped. For storage, the door panel storage slots, central armrest box, and glove box all offer considerable capacity. The rear center armrest is equipped with cup holders, enhancing practicality. The trunk capacity is 506L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats to easily accommodate strollers or large luggage.
Regarding performance, this car is equipped with a 3.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 244 horsepower and a peak torque of 326Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. In real-world driving, the power output is notably smooth, with no abruptness during initial acceleration as seen in turbocharged vehicles. The throttle responds linearly, and acceleration is stable. In normal driving mode, the gearbox shifts promptly and smoothly, with almost no noticeable jolts. When switched to sport mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and gear shifts are delayed to deliver more direct power output, providing better confidence during overtaking. However, as the car weighs 1780kg, its high-speed acceleration lacks the burst of power seen in smaller turbocharged engines, but it entirely meets the requirements for daily family use.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate resistance and decent precision, with minimal dead zone. The suspension system features a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. It can absorb most road bumps effectively, with minimal jolting when crossing speed bumps or uneven surfaces. However, during cornering, body roll is somewhat pronounced, which is expected for a family-oriented vehicle—it is not designed for exceptional handling. The braking performance is adequate, with a pedal travel that feels appropriate and linear braking power delivery. The vehicle remains stable during emergency braking.
As for fuel consumption, we drove 100km each under urban congested conditions and highway scenarios. The combined fuel consumption was approximately 11.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 10.4L/100km. Considering the 3.5L engine displacement, this level of fuel consumption is within an acceptable range. Regarding noise control, tire and wind noise are more noticeable at high speeds but remain within acceptable levels, not interfering with normal conversations inside the car.
In summary, the core strengths of the 2019 Geely Emgrand GT 3.5L 6AT lie in its spacious interior, smooth power delivery, and rich features. Compared with similarly positioned models that use a 2.0T engine, its naturally aspirated engine offers better smoothness, and the rear seating area is more spacious. However, fuel consumption is relatively higher, and its acceleration lacks the punch of turbocharged models. Overall, this car is more suitable for families prioritizing comfort and practicality, especially those who frequently drive long distances or travel with multiple passengers. If you value smooth power delivery and spaciousness and are not overly concerned about fuel consumption, the Emgrand GT would be a good choice.
