Specs

As competition in Malaysia's B-Segment SUV market intensifies, consumer demand for spatial practicality, feature richness, and smooth driving continues to evolve. The 2019 Honda HR-V 1.8 V, as a popular model in this segment, has maintained high attention due to the Honda brand's reputation and unique features such as ULTRA Seats. This test drive will focus on its static details and dynamic performance to verify whether its core highlights meet the daily usage needs of family users.

From the exterior, the 2019 HR-V 1.8 V follows Honda's family design language, with an overall style that leans towards youthfulness and dynamism. The front features a sturdy chrome strip connecting the LED headlights on both sides, paired with a trapezoidal lower grille for high recognizability. The car’s side profile exhibits smooth lines, with a continuous waistline extending from the front to the rear, complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels for a stable visual effect. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights align with the rear spoiler, while the silver trim on the lower rear bumper adds a touch of SUV ruggedness. As for the lighting system, LED headlights, daytime running lights, and automatic headlights come standard, meeting nighttime illumination and practicality needs.

Inside, the interior predominantly features black, accented with silver trim for contrast, with an overall layout that is simple and orderly. The center console is covered with soft-touch materials that feel refined; a 7-inch touchscreen display is positioned centrally and supports the Sound Plus function, offering decent operational smoothness. However, the audio quality from the four speakers is fairly standard. In terms of features, the 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and power-adjustable front passenger seat enhance seating comfort, while the front single-zone automatic air conditioning is easy to operate. Practical features such as Keyless entry and start, steering wheel paddle shifters, and a 220V power outlet improve everyday convenience. Space is a standout feature of the HR-V, with a 2610mm wheelbase offering ample legroom in both the front and rear rows. A 177cm passenger sitting in the rear row still has two fists worth of space between their knees and the front seat. The trunk provides a standard capacity of 437L, which can be expanded further by folding down the rear seats. The ULTRA Seats support various folding configurations, making it flexible for carrying large or tall items and fully accommodating family cargo needs with ease.

In terms of power, the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 142PS/6500rpm and a maximum torque of 172N·m/4300rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. During take-off, power response is smooth, and the low-rev torque output is sufficient for daily commutes. When accelerating, the CVT transmission delivers linear performance without noticeable jerks. For overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply raises the engine speed above 4000rpm, providing adequate power reserves. Two driving modes are available: Normal and ECON. In ECON mode, power output becomes slightly gentler, suitable for urban traffic to save fuel consumption. Handling is standard, with moderate steering wheel weight and acceptable responsiveness. The front MacPherson independent suspension absorbs most minor road vibrations while navigating urban bumps, ensuring good rear passenger comfort. However, the body leans noticeably during sharp turns, making it better suited for smooth driving. As for fuel consumption, the real-world measurement on mixed roads is about 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.6L but still reasonable compared to other vehicles in the same class.

In terms of ride comfort, the sound insulation performance aligns with the positioning of a B-Segment SUV. While wind and tire noise can be transmitted at high speeds, it does not affect normal conversations. The seat cushioning is moderately supportive, making long rides less fatiguing. The electric parking brake and hill start assist function enhance everyday driving convenience. In terms of safety features, 6 airbags, vehicle stability control, lane-changing assist, rear parking radar, and a rearview camera are all standard equipment, providing comprehensive safety assurance.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2019 Honda HR-V 1.8 V lie in its flexible space layout, rich practical features, and smooth driving experience. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota C-HR, it offers superior space practicality and a more competitive price with its ULTRA Seats design. This car is suitable for consumers who value family practicality, smooth driving, and brand reliability, especially for those who frequently need to carry cargo or travel with multiple passengers. If you're looking for a well-rounded city SUV with no significant weaknesses, the HR-V 1.8 V is worth considering.

Drove the HR-V 1.8V for three years, super worry-free for city commuting—smooth following in traffic jams and easy parking in one move. With the rear Ultra Seat folded down, it can fit a stroller and a camping box, more than enough for outings with kids. The 1.8 naturally aspirated engine isn’t sluggish for overtaking. The interior has a bit of a plastic feel, but the safety features include 6 airbags, giving family members peace of mind while sitting inside.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy downpour. Although the CVT transmission lacked a bit of punch on the slippery uphill, the smoothness of the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine ensured that my parents, who were dozing off in the back seat, weren't jolted awake. When cornering, the vehicle stability control quietly kicked in, and gripping the multi-function steering wheel with paddle shifters gave me a sense of security. Once we reached the orchard, the Ultra seats folded down with one touch, making it easy to fit in three large bags of durian, proving the 437L trunk space is indeed impressive. Although the leather seats inside aren’t top-notch, their breathability is sufficient, so sitting for a long time doesn’t feel stuffy. The only minor drawback was the slightly delayed power response when overtaking on mountain roads; otherwise, the performance would score 4.5 out of 5.

Having driven the HR-V 1.8V for over two years, the CVT is as smooth as drinking white coffee during traffic jams, and the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine is powerful enough for overtaking. When the Ultra seats are folded down, they can fit camping gear, though the central control screen occasionally lags. Overall, it's hassle-free and really great for family use!

Previously, I drove the old Myvi, and switching to the HR-V 1.8V is truly a qualitative leap! A score of 4 for the interior is fair — the plastic texture is indeed a bit heavy, especially the hard panel on the passenger side; however, the functionality is practical enough. The electric seats and ULTRA seats are super convenient for weekend family camping trips, as folding them down can fit a folding bike. Performance deserves a perfect score of 5, no complaints — the 1.8NA+CVT is incredibly smooth in Kuala Lumpur's rush hour traffic, delivering power as needed, and it's also very stable at 110km/h on the highway. Safety is even more reassuring, with 6 airbags + ESP. Last time on the North-South Expressway during a rainy day, the car's stability system intervened just in time to prevent a potential skid. The only minor gripe is that the central control screen is slightly slow to respond, but it's sufficient for daily use. All in all, for Malaysia's road conditions, the HR-V is definitely the top choice for family use!

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just after leaving the Klang Valley, we encountered heavy rain. The LED headlights of the HR-V have strong penetration and still remained clear in the rain. The vehicle stability system also ensured smooth lane changes on the slippery roads. While climbing the mountain, the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine was adequate, but its power when going uphill was slightly lacking, deserving a 4 out of 5 score. The most surprising feature was the Ultra Seats, which, when folded down, accommodated three large boxes of durians. On the way home, the Keyless entry system and automatic air conditioning made things much more convenient for my tired family. As for the appearance, the pearl white body looked especially bright after the rain, and I couldn't help but take a second glance every time I parked it in the neighborhood.
